Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, Benoit and Vincent help us to correct our vintage chateau flooring that was incorrectly repaired several years ago. We make our first attempt at placing new cobblestone and take Ian's brother to see one of the most beautiful castles in France, Mont-Saint-Michel!
Our "beau chateau" (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!

I loved seeing Mont Saint-Michel when I was 10yo. We lived in the Netherlands and some of my American family members came over and in two cars we did a road trip to France. We stayed at Bed and Breakfasts around the outside of Paris. Visited the palace of Versailles, Monet's residence and gardens, and Mont Saint-Michel. Probably a few other locations outside Paris, but those three locations really stand out in my memory. I hope to take my child on a similar trip in the future.

When I was 10 we went to Niagara Falls & I remember it well (57 years ago) So don't go if your children are younger, it will make it special to them! Hope you get to give them memorable moments often!

My son and his family took me on a surprise vacation from Germany to Brittany and Normandie in 2018. One of the highlights of our trip was a day spent walking throughout Mont Saint-Michel and a second evening visit walking around the outside to take photos. Your trip brought back so many happy memories. I enjoyed watching you add to your cobble stone walk and fixing the beautiful wood floor.

If you’re planning to see Mont Saint Michel, then we recommend that you visit a few other areas in Normandy, like Giverny (Monet’s gardens) and Honfleur. Normandy is beautiful!

From what I have seen on You Tube, rural France isnt so different from the 1970s when I came with my family for long family holidays, touring and camping

We’re going to Mont Saint Michel in June, I’ve been before - 23 years ago, it’s a lovely sight, we’re currently looking for overnight stays, then on to Dinan, maybe La Torche and then South, the plan isn’t complete yet though

The best idea for that parquet floor is to cover the whole floor with sanding filler then come back with a big sander and plane it down to one even surface. Just be sure to countersink any nail heads.

When I do my outdoor bricks I mix 3:1 Sand and morter. It makes the " grouting" firmer. Just an idea.

As usual a great vlog. Two things. You should go through Journey to the Chateau, The Pethricks and Doing it Ourselves. All three of them redid their floors using great products. Also the Pethricks and Doing it Ourselves redid cobblestones. You might be interested in them.

Any foundation or drainage issues aside, I 100% would have suggested planting something in those spots. Paving (even cobblestones) right up to a foundation is a big miss in landscape architecture. It just creates a bleak hardscape. Planters would be an option to flank the doors, but they require more upkeep than something in the ground. Still, progress is progress.
