I've never considered this 1965 Ford F-100 truck to be my first car, but it kind of is. My Grandma signed this truck over to me when I was 5 and I didn't know it was mine until many years after I started driving. This truck was built and customized by my Grandpa I never met. He was always doing something with cars, building engines, racing them, whatever needed to happen. After he passed away this truck sat in garage until late last year. We went and picked it up, now it's time to start restoring it with all the best parts I can find.

That engine is from the FE family. It is NOT a Y-block which predated the FE's. The FE debuted in 1958. Neat machine.

The FE 352 engine was first put in the truck in 1965. That being said, if the engine was changed it could be a 352, 360, 390, etc. the best way to find out is pull a plug place the piston at top dead center. Put a wire in the plark plug hole and mark the wire with a sharpie closest to the hole. Turn the engine over by hand, watching the wire go down. When it reaches the very bottom mark the wire. Pull out the wire and measure the distance between the marks, that’s your stroke. Look up the stroke in a manual, that will tell you what engine you have.

This episode brought back memories of my grandpa and his trucks. He had for a long time a 73 c10 stepside with three on the tree and a 250 i6. I rode with him everywhere in that truck and on the 94 dodge dakota 3.9v6 5 speed he later had before he passed away. That was the reason I got my 2000 ranger and my love for pickup trucks. Thank you for sharing your grandpa's history with us and I look forward to this build.

My first vehicle was my grandparents 62 Ford unibody. It was my Grandpa's farm truck. It sat in his pasture for years before he gave it to me. Didn't check all of the fluids and burnt up the rear end. Primered that bad boy gray. It was sweeeeeeet!

The air cleaner in the truck is about '70, and that engine may be a newer 390. I'd bet that your grandpa swapped in a newer, larger engine. All of the exterior dress on the engine is also '70 correct - valve covers, crankcase ventilation, oil cap, etc etc etc. '70 was the last year of the FE-series in passenger cars, so that matches up. They are visually identical to any FE-series engine, 332 through 428. The V8 in '65 F100s was the 352 - which is an FE-series engine - rated @ 208 hp in the trucks. The passenger car '65 352 had higher compression, a 4-barrel and was rated 250 hp / 350 lb-ft torque. I guess you could consider it a sorta y-block since it's that deep-skirt design, but it's very different from the original Y-Block V8 that was introduced in '54. No shared parts. The 292 Y-Block's last year in a US-market car was '62; it was still in F-series in '64, and that was its last application in the US. (The 292 lived on in South American Galaxies through 1975.) - yeah, I'm a Blue Oval guy... I grew up with a 292/3-on-da-tree '63 F100 and learned to drive a manual in it. Also slid it into a ditch on the snowy night before I was *supposed* to go get my driver's license, but that's another story.

@@garysimonson9593 and if I remember right the 352 also had the crossover manifold like the y-block trucks. It's been a long time since I worked on one. But so much is 70s to early 80s style it would make sense that that really is a 390 in there.

My dad bought a new 1976 F250 "SuperCab" with the 390. I started driving it in 1983. I can tell you, that engine is as tuff as a hogs nose. We beat the snot out of that truck and couldn't tear the engine up. Busted the Dana 60 rear but never hurt the 390 / C6. The truck caught fire in the mid 90's and burned to the ground. Super Cool truck and you can't be denied from that side of the family. You look like your grandfather. ATB

My grandfather passed away on March 18th. Right now I'm trying to be able to keep his 2004 Trailblazer. Nothing special vehicle wise but most of my childhood was spent in it with him and my grandmother. He bought a 1999 Ford F350 extended cab dually with the 7.3. I tracked it down after he sold it in 2007 and someone nearby owns it. It looks brand new and hopefully I'll be able to buy it back soon. Can't wait to see you finish this truck and get it on the road

I'm from Grandpa's day. That under-bed tool box was a Ford option. FE motor. May have come with either 352, or 390 ... So issues to be careful with the FE are mostly related to the oil pump drive (hex shaft). They can break. So if the motor needs to be done enough to get into the dizzy/oil pump drive, be sure to use an ARP replacement. The next big issue will be the ground side of the 12v system. Add crimped and soldered #4 cables from the Neg terminal pinch bolt to the block and firewall (the OEM grounds were weak). All the systems will come to life. Lube the hood hinges. Rebuild/clean the carb and replace the fuel pump. If it pin holes the diaphragm you'll fuel dilute the oil. Add big inline fuel filter under cab. The dizzy may have a felt oiling washer under the point plate - soak it with oil. Clean the point cam and buy high quality OEM points. Use good light grease on the point cam wiper. Check to see that the point ground wire under the plate is not dried and cracked... It can short and stop the engine intermittently. If pliable and not showing rub marks - good to go :)

What he said.But also,if it sat that long,you've got 200 miles before the water pump goes out,FE's didn't usually(if ever) come with a C4.use a dowel to find stroke to tell if it's a 390. engines in this family:332,352,360,390,406,410,427,428.
@brocluno01
@brocluno01 4 жыл бұрын
A 390 never came with a C4 in a truck. Almost 100% sure it's a C6 and that is a pretty bullet proof box. But, on the chance that it has an HD Cruise-O-Matic - never, ever back up and drop into a forward gear while rolling. You will bust the center web and you will loose reverse. No fix, you need a new case at that point. Always stop all motion before changing directions in the tranny. Tough enough tranny with that one weakness that put a lot of these old trucks in the scrap yard ...

Thanks for the video. I'm a grandpa and have owed a 1966 F-250 custom cab for the last 43 years. However, none of my children have expressed an interest in it. I grew up as a petrol head and was a drag racer for many years but cars where never an interest for my children (they have more interest in computers and cell phones). I also built a camper shell for it and the truck has been all over the country. It is still in good condition but I've not used it much in the last 20 years. I was thinking of selling it along with a 1965 2+2 Mustang I own but this makes me rethink doing that.

I owned a 1965 Ford that came with a 352. It was a short wheel base step side and it was a bottle rocket. I changed out the rear end put solid lifters it in and did some other things that made it a fun 1/4 mile racer. That was when kids raced for fun, back in the 1960s. The truck you have is very special and they were priced out of range for most buyers. I've only seen one other one in the small Texas town where I grew up. You've got a crown jewel and it deserves your best efforts to keep it repaired and road worthy. I am really looking forward to following you as you get it back on the road.

I just bought a Palomino pop-top slide in camper for my F-100. The old '67 Capri camper was in pretty sad shape. My old F-100 has a 352 cu in original engine I rebuilt in 1994. It has 267,702 on it but still looks showroom. The bottom has been coated and looks nice. I did add beefier leaf springs and rear air shocks. No rust here in Texas from salt where I live. The only places I have ever camped are Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and southern CA(Big Bear). I'm thinking about getting a 390 FE for it. I found one in a salvage yard that only had about 52,000 miles on it. These are great old trucks! Thanks for showing yours on here.

My grandfather had a 64 Ford F100 long bed that I wish I had but his second wife basically took everything that wasn't nailed down when he passed away suddenly. Including any will he might have had. I'm not sure what engine it had in it but I think it was original but he had a cast iron 4 barrel intake manifold that may be long gone by now. Speedo didn't work, the three on the tree was replaced by three on the floor. I have good memories of that truck so perhaps I need to do some fighting over it if she's still alive. Lots of water under that bridge. Like the Yangtze. Seeing that '65 reminds me of my friends '65 with a 427 in it. I had fun times in that truck as well. Seeing this truck made me nostalgic.

Great truck,i bought a 65 camper special in 71, put 225,000 miles on that truck. Poor 352 was pretty tired by the end.

My Dad purchased a very, very lightly used 1966 Ford (three on the tree, AM radio, no air factory or otherwise, and power nothing) in late 1966 for use on the family farm and as his daily driver. It had a VERY heavy duty suspension for the day, so much so, that I've seen late model 4X4 pickups and SUVs that did not have ride height that totally unmodified (ever) '66 did. It was the same "tan" or "sand" color that the lower part of your truck is. The truck was listed as an "Industrial/heavy duty model" and was powered by a truly gutsy 352 "Industrial" V8 with a two barrel carburetor that I could easily stick my thumbs into with room to spare. I took my drivers test in that truck and drove it to school and back most days from 1970 to 1972. It had so much torque that more than one of my classmates, who owned "built" (by them for the most part) Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds. and other makes and models of the day, often asked me what kind of cam was in the truck....I always told them a three quarter cam, they believed me and I left it at that. With "snow tires" on the rear I had no problem "smoking" the majority of them off the line, and beating them, badly, traffic light to traffic light. That truck had no problem pulling a cattle trailer with six hefty bulls in it and two equally well fed cows in the bed to the cattle sale Dad preferred to do business with at least three times a year. It never seemed to be strained under the load and performed admirably until Dad decided he needed a new pickup....Which was a mistake....He traded for a 1976 Ford pickup, automatic, air, power steering and brakes and a....Oh Lord help me....With the gutless 302cid carbureted engine....But he learned pretty quick that was a bad idea, after spending a small fortune on steering and suspension work, and tires and traded for a brand-new 1987 Dodge, also automatic with air, power steering and brakes but with a 318cid engine that served his farm and daily driver needs until he started having health problems and turned in his drivers license. Upon his passing my younger brother inherited the Dodge and still drives it occasionally to this day....But given a choice....I'd be all over a 1966 Ford with three on the tree, no air, power nothing and a 352cid "Industrial" if I were find one for sale.

Trucks have come a long way since then but even so, that truck was pretty swanky in its day. Thanks for sharing the awesome story of your Grandfather. Americana at it's best!

Great looking truck, love the F100 series (Favs are straight 6, 300 ci, 3 on the tree). Nice to learn about your Grandfather, that is where you get the mechanical aptitude from, know that he would be proud of you - except hanging around with bad influence Josh! Can hear him yelling into the intercom - don’t make me come back there! Glove box with gloves in it, not a dead flashlight, oil change receipts (I'm sure he did his own). Toolbox in bed, I had a ‘77 Highboy (F250 HD, 390 ci) with a toolbox in bed, passenger side. Couple things to get it running, a couple things to keep it running.

Great channel. Two thoughts. Some videos of fixing cars for single moms trying to get by during these tough times. Second, basic car repairs for keeping old cars on the road.
