Full restoration for a Plum Crazy 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger with one crazy car story behind it.
For its introductory model year the Challenger was available in two series, Challenger and Challenger R/T, and three models, two-door hardtop, Special Edition two-door hardtop, or convertible. The base model was the Challenger with either an inline-6 or V8 engine. The Special Edition hardtop, available on either the base Challenger or on the R/T, added a number of appearance, convenience, and comfort features. Produced for the 1970 model year only, this more luxurious SE specification included as standard a vinyl roof with a "SE" medallions on the pillars, a smaller "formal" rear window, leather and vinyl bucket seats, and an overhead interior console that contained three warning lights (door ajar, low fuel, and seatbelts). The standard engine on the base model was a 225 cu in (3.7 L) Straight-6. The standard engine on the higher trim models was a 318 cu in (5.2 L) V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. For 1970, the optional engines included the 340 and 383 cu in (5.6 and 6.3 L), as well as the 440 and 426 cu in (7.2 and 7.0 L) V8s, all with a standard 3-speed manual transmission, except for the 290 hp (216.3 kW) 383 cu in. engine, which was available only with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission. A 4-speed manual was optional on all engines except the 225 cu in (3.7 L) Inline-6 and the 2-barrel 383 cu in (6.3 L) V8.
The performance model was the Challenger R/T (Road/Track), with a 383 cu in (6.3 L) "Magnum" V8, rated at 335 hp (250 kW); 300 hp (224 kW) for 1971, due to a drop in compression. The standard transmission was a 3-speed manual. Optional R/T engines were the 375 hp (280 kW) 440 cu in (7.2 L) Magnum, the 390 hp (291 kW) 440 cu in (7.2 L) Six-Pack and the 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi rated at 425 hp (431 PS; 317 kW) at 5,000 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The R/T was available in either the hardtop or convertible. The Challenger R/T came with a Rallye instrument cluster that included a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer, an 8,000 rpm tachometer and an oil pressure gauge. The shaker hood scoop was not available after 1971.

As a youngster was always so jealous of the muscle car era. Was old enough to see them but too young to own or drive one. Never imagined years later I would have a 485Hp Challenger then a 717HP challenger that not only is much faster but can stop and turn! It will be a shame to watch them disappear again and never return. Even though the electric cars can be faster now it's just not the same without the beautiful sound and smell.

When he tells Mark, "the glass is still good. We might even try and keep one of those original stickers for you if we can't find another one..." and they pan out, I was shocked to see the R.I.T. (Rochester Institute of Technology) parking sticker! I wonder what year is on it. I was a student there in 1974-77, but don't remember this car, but the parking lots were large and spread out on the campus. Small world.

Yeah that thing doesn't need to be restored. Only original once, or less than 300 of those things built. Imagine how many of them are unrestored that exist today.

I love how this guy goes through all the details of the car, stressing it's originality. Then he says he's going to "restore" it. WTF?

What he’s saying is that it’s a good car for restoration because it hasn’t been modified or repaired excessively during its life. Also when you restore a car you reuse what you can but often it’s better to replace parts as needed.

@@DeepseaSteve But as it now stands, every single component of the car HAS been repaired. In some ways, the car may as well be considered "Rebuilt on a salvage title." I sorta wonder what the fair market value of a low-miles, factory original car would be, compared to that of a similar car after a six-figure restoration. I'll bet that all-in, he lost a ton of money on the deal. Also, and this is just a personal-thing with me, but the original owner was a real person, struck down in the prime of life. He had a name. It would have been nice to at least commemorate his sacrifice by knowing a little bit about the man, and whether ha had any family left. In any case, it's his car and his money...he can do with it as he pleases. "But they're only original once"

The best Challenger ever!!! When I was in high school back in the 70s one of my buddies had a Plum Crazy Challenger, it only had a 6 cylinder but it was surely a cool car!!! Thanks for showcasing this beauty!! 👍👍

Same - it’s a shame to dispose of all that originality, it surely wouldn’t have cost much more to do that level of restoration on a tatty car. A car is only original once.

Back in 1967 my buddies brother bought a GTO Muncie , Tri Power, posi . He then got sent to Vietnam so he let his 16 yo brother drive it until he got back ! So both my buddy and I had a lot of fun with it and went through 2 sets of tires but no scratches at all . Imagine how you would feel 16 yo and driving a GTO ! I moved on a year later my buddy inherited it when his brother died in Vietnam . I knew of 2 other cars that had the same scenario !

I grew up where a local 16 year old resident was injured at the 1969 Indy Nationals, and never got to drive the Boss 302 he was given for his 16th birthday. Permanently blinded, his father drive him around in it for years afterward.

Plum Crazy Purple , xcellent color. There's one floating around tiwn where l reside in Australia. A 440. ( without the 6 pack ) it's White Duco is nice , but wrong 4me . It's 4 sale . I unfortunately dont have the funds 4 it myself. 😢😭😭😢

From first look it looked really good but from the close up shots like when it was getting blasted you can see the real condition and it was a good used car like it should have been from the beginning. I feel that unless a car is a super rare low mile car like the hemi cuda or challenger that had only 47 then those are garage queens but anything else is game.

Now this is what you call a proper restoration, even recreated the factory markings. I see lots of so called restoration from these wannabe people from youtube that shotguns everything and replace stuff that doesn't even need replacing, all they are doing is unnecessary destroy history.

Restoring this car is kinda sacrilegious in my mind. I'd rather have an original survivor car that hasn't been f%#ked with. Once it's been torn apart and rebuilt, it might look like or even better than brand new, but it's no longer an "original" car. I'd pay more for it if it hadn't been screwed with. A beautiful specimen either way.

The car had been in an accident in the rear and had lots of pinholes plus some rust. This means the car had to be resprayed at some point or at least a large blend job so the paint defiantly wasn't original. Best bet would be body work, paint, mechanical rebuild and send it down the road. This was probably done in the late 90's or early 2000 and that was the peak of over restored cars.

I don't understand factory restoration. I'm close to 70 and I tell you most everyone once they got their new stock car started modifying it. As a matter of fact it was an embarrassment if you kept your car or Harley stock. It made your car individual to you just run out the clock on the warranty lol!!

Sounds like you haven't considered.. At the time of this airing, Tom said these cars were worth 60-70k. But in 2021, these Hemi Challengers are selling for 85k to 275k depending on the car's condition, factory options and it's provenance. The value of this particular '70 plum crazy, 4-speed, Hemi Challenger (with code V68 sport stripe delete & non vinyl top) would be valued between 195k to 225k. Because of the car's originality, the factory plum crazy paint code & the attention to detail during it's high-quality restoration.

Under 500k sounds a little low a 2005 gt40 sells for 400k that is worth buying you can drive it and it will go up in value I thought hemi cars in piss poor condition cost 400k I thought this total cost was in the 700 to million range

It's concourse level restoration everything has to be exactly as it came from the factory. I was thinking, it would be cool if they could add reinforcement on the inside so you can't tell it's been reinforced. I don't get why they replaced the bucket seats, seat covers sure, but why the whole seat? If he really wants to drive it, they should put disk brakes on the front after it's done with the show circuit.

@@bigredc222 it's a hemi car, it will have front and rear torque boxes from factory for reinforcement. That'll be fine for a stock 426. The seats would have received new foam and recovered, not replaced. In fact, it shows him recovering them I believe.

@@challengerbrant He was talking about the covers for the rear seats, then he says the bucket seats, Year one did a good job supplying those. 42:30. It sounds like he's saying supplying the whole seat but I guess it's just the covers. As far as the torque boxes didn't you see them pointing the cracks on both sides of the car caused by the hemi? 7:40
