Picked up an a thrift store. Worked, but was super quiet. Lots of purple matsushita capacitors. Lets dive in and restore this to good working order. An excellent Hi-Fi Clock radio.

You know you love repairing stuff when the effort and/or cost of repair is infinitely greater than the value of the kit. Great job, interesting video to watch. Makes me feel better when I see somebody else really struggle with a dial cord, I know it's not just me that has that problem.

Nice finished product! 11:28 I think the glue on the capacitor bottom to PCB surface was used to secure them for "wave soldering" the PCB, as larger components might move a bit when going through the mechanical process of passing the board over a liquid pool of solder, that has peaks of waves contact all of the exposed copper and component leads, as it looks like that board has been made with ( all of the joints have the same look, no real excess or lack of solder on them from what you showed). It's just too bad they used a product that causes issues over time.

I was offered a job at a company that did wave soldering. I found out I was already on more than the line manager who was interviewing me, so I didn't go for it. It was a shame really the place was yards from where I lived at the time - their pay grade stank though. It's always the way for me - when I find the job I want the pay is lousy.

I have this radio. Purch'd new in 1990. A daily driver with orig. caps. No leaks and performs well. Did replace the orig. lamp bulb with LED. Remember: SEPARATE "OFF" and "ON" buttons.

Got a pair of these last week. Both of them work fine, they just turned yellow. Got a place that gives me free electronics.

I repaired one of these a while back. It needed the backlight (I used an LED) and the power supply cap. It's been working very well since.

Great video. Just a couple of points that could be helpful. Acetone may soften the glue under the caps and you could put a drop of nail polish on the knots you tied in the dial cord so it won't loosen. I've watched many of your videos always enjoyable. Thanks for your efforts.

I've also learned recently that freezing it makes quick work of removal too.

Very cool radio, very 80s... "HiFi" might be a bit of a stretch though. But much better than most other clock radios from the era for sure.

I have one of these radios, the sound quality is amazing owned from new since 1988 and it was very expensive, only thing i ever had to do to it was replace the dial backlight bulb. dont know how the hell they managed to get such a great sound out of a speaker thats not sealed in an enclosure, these have a lovely warm and full sound, excellent radios. mine doesnt have any circuit glue or matsushita capacitors, theyre jamicon, might be because mines the 250v UK version, spray oven cleaner will remove that shitty glue mate, spray on and leave for 15minutes. theres a bulb behind that silver panel on the dial, they need to be replaced with a green diffused led and resistor.

If you like, you can print a copy of the scematic diagram. On that you mark out all "new" capacitors and put it in the radio for future repair. Good repair. Regards Stig Österberg from Dalsbruk in Finland.

I took some of your advice and picked up a cap wizard. It's the older style with the yellow writing, you had mentioned this is better. This one does not have the cap saver board. Do you advise adding that board? Also bought the chem-wik solder wick, wow does this work so much better!

The cap saver will save your ass when you accidentally test a cap with a voltage on it

What’s the little hole on the front for (under the clock, but above the dial)? looks like a CdS cell with some crud on it.

That's exactly what it is. Adjusts display brightness with ambient light.

Any thoughts on where a bluetooth receiver might best be integrated into one of these? I was thinking of having the BT take AM's place. And where to get a power source for it? Looking at the schematic nothing jumped out at me as being a rectifier, so I don't know where they're making their DC supply, but I'm a newbie.
@JordanPier Жыл бұрын
Best place to inject would be to interrupt the high side of the volume control, install a switch between the existing line and thr bt adapter. You could take the main dc supply, run it to thr input of a 7805 regulator and feed the bt adapter with the output. Most run on 5v

I have a Panasonic HiFi VCR from 1984 that has some issues with the loading mechanism and the playback mechanism and it has tons of those purple and bluish purple Matsushita capacitors on all of the logic boards in the VCR. I wonder if those caps would cause some of the issues I'm having with my VCR? The VCR I'm referring to is a PV-1730.

Does anyone know of anyone that will refurbish Proton 320's? Nothing major, just cleaning, replacing dial plug, and replacing items (capacitors?) that fail after 35 years.

I do, but the cost outweighs the value of the machine. Takes a good couple hours plus parts to rehab one of these.
