In this video I show you how to totally refinish a wood stove . I clean it up then I sand and grind all the rust off and repaint it . you can save a lot of money buying items that need a little repair or restoration and a wood stove is no exception .

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list kzfaq.infoUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

Hey Thanks buddy! Sorry though about you mishap. I am redoing my wood stove and was thinking of red and black. I was going to use flat black wood stove paint on the door and thought I might use the VHT automotive flat red high heat header paint on the stove. I can see now that wood have been a huge mistake. That must have been super frustrating for you but glad you didn't throw in the towel instead you bit the bullet and carried on through with plan two. So today I used high heat flat black stove paint on the stove and high heat copper color stove paint on the door. Have to run the cure outside tomorrow. Cross my figures. Another mistake you can make is on the re-coat time if you are doing a second coat. I had a corner heat shield I made 3x3x4 feet high and sprayed it with high heat stove paint out of spray bombs. It was going great until spray bomb nozzle started spitting lets call it barfing on the job. So on one bent section of the shield that the paint stared to spit all over, I sanded lightly and sprayed over the next day and unfortunately it started to alligator the prior days paint. Nightmare on Pain Street. So was left with no choice but to rub that section all off with acetone and start again. Not perfect the second time but nearly. I hate spray bombs with a passion but funny how we find ourselves using them again. There are better nozzles out there now but they still seem to screw up just when your nearly finished. They have a lot of xylene, toluene and or acetone in them so not only are they pretty toxic, you need to do all your re-coats within one hour in one session otherwise you need to wait 48 hours or more to avoid eating into the first coat and get the dreaded alligator finish. Not the wrinkle finish you were going for the other pull your hair out one. On the stove I used the Satin Black Rustoleum stove paint in the quart can and just thinned it enough to get out of the gun. It when on beautifully with no spitting like the stinky bombs. Hope I am still happy tomorrow after the heat cure fire.

yeah it really sucked to have to refinish it but I'm happy I did and got this video up . Before this I couldn't find any info on weather you could use header paint or not and you're not the first person who has told me they were about to use it before they seen this video ,so I'm glad its saved some people a real pain in the neck . That copper black combo sounds like it would look awesome !!
@dpo1867

OK update, sprayed er up the other day. Had the curse of bug butt boogie and an area I tried to fix. Should have left alone but no one around to pull me back and whack me. So it was the dreaded how long to wait before recoat to avoid the cursed rustoleum 2nd coat wrinkle. I wasn't willing to take a chance so last night I cured that paint with a burn in fire. The satin black was quart can but the copper was a spray bomb. The copper spray bomb didn't seem to cure and stayed a bit soft The better half wasn't too crazy about it so I sanded everything down both stove and door. Had to use toluene to get the last bit off door. Today perfect day, 27 Celsius and very little wind and low humidity. Wiped down with some paint prep and fired the gun up. Yahoo went A1 with only couple bugs that I picked out with a dental pick and air. Going for coffee now to celebrate! Later in the summer I have to redo the big Lopi woodstove. Will use the same satin black but any two tones colors I will get the Stove Bright woodstove paint rather than take a chance again on the rustoleun. You know what they say once bit twice shy. First coat was frustration second coat was a dream. Got the system down now for the next one. I HOPE. Live and learn, right? (-;

Do I understand you correctly that I would have to hear up the stove and let it cool some to paint. I have a good wood stove store by me that has cleaned my chimney. I will be selling the house and want to certify the chimney and stove. For people who do not have a good clearance behind or below their stove pipe I learned that a flashing can be added to the pipe to eliminate need to change hearth.

Who is the manufacturer of that stove? I need new glass and the glass retaining plate with new screws. Data plate is unreadable and I’m trying to do the same thing you did which looks fantastic!

hey sorry it's taken so long for me to respond , I've fallen way behind on comments. The stove is made by Warnock Hersey . If that doesn't get you the parts you need you can do a google search for wood stove stove glass and order it by the size you need . the retainer plate is just a flat piece of metal with a couple holes for the screws ,so you should be able to make your own pretty easily as well. hope this helps . glad you enjoyed the video !!

Great just what I have to do with my over 50 year old wood stove that came with my house. I have had it for 30. Mine is not as rusty. So I figure it should not be hard to do. I do have a crack inside the liner, not sure if that is a problem?
@blackspruce1861
@blackspruce1861 Жыл бұрын
it's kinda fun restoring them much more fun if you can paint it outside and fire it for a few hours outside to burn of the fumes .. not sure I guess it would depend on how big the crack is

PS it was the same model stove you refinished. They were cheap and they sold a lot of them. Not a high end stove but they work.

My stove is very similar. It attracts dust like crazy. I have a hard time keeping a steady fire in it. It's either all out or dying down too much. Any tips?
@blackspruce1861
@blackspruce1861 7 ай бұрын
Hmm, I'm not sure could be a lot of different things could be the quality or dryness of the wood , lack of airflow maybe the way the chimney is ran or maybe it needs to be cleaned .
@melissaroth4467
@melissaroth4467 7 ай бұрын
@@blackspruce1861 It would probably help if I had more experience with the stove. Since the chimney fire years and years ago, we have only used it a few times. The chimney should be clean as we had it lined after the fire. We were told we'd never have to clean it. I don't know how much I believe that. lol
