Restoring a chisel WITHOUT a bench grinder

There are many chisel-restoring videos out there, but they all use a bench grinder, which is not a tool everyone has! I don't even have one! They all mention you can restore the chisel without one by spending extra time on lower grit stones, but I wanted to challenge myself and see if it was possible.

I think a simple solution to give more access to the center stone would be to raise it an inch or so compared to the outside stones. Should be high enough to allow the chisel handle to clear the outside stones without adding too much height/bulkiness.

Belt sander works great for roughing in bevels. Also a little steel wool to get rid of rust on top and sides might keep your stones cleaner!

I agree with one of the previous viewers, that this is an advert for what I would say is an expensive addition to sharpen chisels on, £230 is a lot of money before you’ve even started the process and questionable as a must or even might have.

Have you looked at the price of 3 separate diamond stones? This price is actually very competitive and you get more. You don’t need it. But I’d you’re looking into diamond stones, which many woodworkers do… this is a great option 👍

I have watched many of your Videos and I am impressed with your skill level .I did an apprenticeship in England and I am trained as a Millwright . I live in NY USA and have worked here for 30 years ,no one I have worked with has impresed with their skill level . You however hold my interest in every video ,and I always learn something .I you want a good chisel ,Japanese chisels are the best in the world .They are called Ori Nomi ,they can cut gossamer thin shavings in the hardest hardwoods .The Japanese can teach us a lot about carpentry ,their temples are made of wood without screws and nails and they stand for hundreds of years in storm and hurricanes .

This was fun to watch. I remember my dad in his shop had an old leather belt he used to strop his hunting knives. That’s the first time I knew about it and I got a cheap leather belt and did the same thing. Works like a charm.

$500 for this here in Australia, Double the website price in the link supplied. Pity that we get shafted all the time with pricing. It is supposed to be a free market world but still restrictions on posting products to us in Ausralia. I just bought 10 different diamond sharpening stones, probably low quality, but I did buy a strop and paste to finish off the sharpening process. Fortunately, I can get the different polishes here from a jewellery store. Good explaining the plus and minuses of the system. Would love to know how those angle marking blocks work, always has intrigued me, and seen it a lot but not explained. Honing guide, what a good idea. You did very well with that chisel restoration. I understand now about the angle marks, thanks. All the best from Sydney Australia.

That is a nice sharpening rig. M. Power does have some nice gear in general. Agreed on foundational work, I use a Worksharp to do my initial clean up. Quite fast and gives great results. Then finish on your M. Power setup/diamond stones. Thanks for the introduction to their diamond sharpening station.

I got a lot of value and inspiration from your videos through the years. This kind of product promotion video is very different from what you used to make. I realize that 1) You don't owe anyone any consistency in content creation and 2) Things change. But it depresses me that rather than making cool projects with humble setup, as you used to, you spend this much time promoting an overpriced product that you yourself likely wouldn't buy a few years back. What you do here can be done with a sheet of sandpaper and a cheap oil stone, for about $10, which better match the cheap chisel too. I appreciate what you have taught us through the years, and acknowledge again that you owe nobody anything, in content creation or else, but, the authenticity and warmth of your earlier works isn't present here.

Looks like a great product. I have been using pebble water stones but they are messy. I like that everything is all in one and the 10 year warranty sounds good. To each is their own. I like it might try to pick one up myself. This is the second positive review I’ve come across on that M-Power system. Also this far Tamar has not lead me astray on any other videos so why would she start now

Really nice. I jumped to the web site to check this out. Well worth the price. I paid $150 for my 3 diamond stones. No holder, no strops. I agree that the middle stone is less accessible. But I also think that it's not really necessary. The 2 end stones are what I would use the sides for anyway.

I have just bought my first trend diamond stone, I think I like the idea of a single stone system because then you can get all around all the stones rather than the limited access to the central stone. Interesting idea having the strops on top as detachable though. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, that is the only downside I really see having this set up like this. But the way I have my stones set up, I had the same issue. I didn’t thinks the strips were going to work as well as they did. I was pleasantly surprised!

I started sharpening by hand maybe 4 or 5 years ago doing the Paul Sellers method. Yes it is a little difficult to learn but with a little practice it's faster than using a jig. But every once in a while it's good to use it to true up your chisels and irons. Like you, I don't have a grinder because a good one that will last costs alot more than $50... I know because I researched it. Good job on this video.

Looks like a pretty nice setup for a beginner and the price is roughly the same as you would pay for a nice set of stones and strop without any type of holder. One thing I don't like is the middle stone not being removeable...or at least couldn't see how in the video. My current setup is very similar to yours...3 DMT stones on some plywood. Mine is a little smaller and less bulky though. I didn't add a bench hook since I don't have a vice. I set it on a drawer liner when in use. Never have a problem with it moving. I also don't have any stop blocks for setting angles on mine which saves a lot of space. I use a Veritas MKII though so it has all that built into the honing guide. Another thing I did not do was glue down my plates, which I see a lot of folks do. Huge advantage when I need to flatten the back of a chisel or plane blade. I can just pop my 600 grit stone out of the middle and put it in one of the outer spots when needed. That way I can still use the entire stone. The one thing I really do like about the MPower is the strops just sitting on top of the diamond plates. That would be pretty handy. Both systems work and it seems both have their advantages and disadvantages. Just a matter of personal preference on which you choose.

as I've seen on a different channel, the stropping is more important than the diamond sharpening itself. It absolutely makes the difference as Tamar has also shown here

without a a bench grinder you can glue some sandpaper to a piece of glass and do the coarse work like that, I have a bench grinder but i've never used it to sharpen anything aside from a lawnmower blade.

I took my first shot at freehand sharpening last weekend on a #5 handplane. It was not in the shape of your chisel but still needed sharpening. I actually went through the steps three times because a teacher once told me the 3 best ways to learn is repetion, repetition and repetition. It got much easier to very quickly. I wanted to try freehand because the honing guide even with a similar blade setting setup is always a pain. As always do what works for you but I recommend you try periodic sharpening of chisels and planes that aren’t disasters a few times. You will be surprised how quick it is. I aspire to reach Rob Cosman’s 32 seconds to sharp but I don’t I will get there. 😂

I don’t know, I think setting up a honing guide with stops takes like 2 seconds and the results are just so much better. I was not a fan of freehand sharpening as you could see. Ha.

You should lookup Trend Honing Guide. It has a cool small aluminum plate that fixes the honing angle problem.

For lapping fluid, regular window cleaner works great. I put some in a small 3 oz spray bottle that I keep with my sharpening setup. I like it with a little more lubrication so I add a couple of drops of glycerin to the small bottle and it works really well. I also made a much smaller honing guide setup block that is wide enough for a plane blade plus a chisel blade, and I put the stops for each offset from the center so I can flip it around for different bevel angles.

Yeah. I typically like to use window cleaner as well. But not windex, I use auto window cleaner by meguiars.

Have the MPOWER FastTrack MK2 Chisel sharpening system. It simplifies the process and is much less expensive. Suggest you review it. As to bench grinders, I wouldn't use a $50 grinder for sharpening. Much too high speed. Bench grinders slow enough for sharpening run $150 and up (way up). Enjoyed the video, am puzzled that some find a tool review to be a problem.

Hey, strange question... Do you ever have any concerns about wearing rings when woodworking? The only woodworking I've done with proper shop equipment (not my equipment, sadly...) came with a blanket "no jewelry" rule, and I've stuck with that. But maybe I worry too much.

Did you strop the chisel back side? You should do the same as honing the bevel. But just once. 5000 grit compound isnt that fine, BTW. It takes very little time to strop with a finer compound.

Yep, use a guide. Freehand is for in between honing IMHE (In My HOBBYIST Opinion). Marking knife lines in the side of my bench that are parallel to bench edge allow super fast setting of the bevel angle in the guide.

@3x3Custom - Tamar I'd send a photo if I knew where. 5 lines cover 25 and 30 degrees for my Saker blade guide. (2 for plane blade notch and 2 for chisel notch. 5th line is just perpendicular to bench edge for rechecking blades are square in guide, but I don't use it anymore. Still use the Veritas guide for serious regrinding bevels. Claim the idea as your own. One double suited diamond plate a float glass plate with 3M super fine diamond lapping film, plus a rectangle of anti slip rug foam make up the full grinding/ honing kit. Everything stacks neatly in a 4"x 8" corner of a 4" deep tool box drawer.

You don't. At least not a grinder with friable wheels mounted vertically. I think Tamar must have something else in mind. Although with a CBD wheel key one) you have the sides of the wheel that you can use. I don't think that is the best way to go either.

Tamar i have never used a bench grinder on a chisel. The product isnt much of an improvement over what you have but i do like the strop. Nice commercial but no sale here sorry. Lets build a guitar or a chair. Youre still the best.👍

Meh, sometimes you a) don’t want to use a piece of machinery, or b) don’t have space for it. For me, a and b both apply, and though yes, it is an ad, the principles could be easily applied to regular whetstones. I live in a small house with no dedicated workshop, and don’t want the noise and dust a grinder creates, so this could work for me.

It’s not a $400 set. A bench grinder is no replacement for getting sharp chisels, just maybe the very first step, and a lot can go south there too. I don’t need this, but I think $200 (with discount) for this complete set is a very competitive price. If cheaper=better for whoever is deciding what to get, there are indeed tons of options. The sharper the tool, the safer it is!

You’re a good teacher with significant skills. I’ve watched many (most?) of your videos. And congratulations on having enough followers so companies will pay you to help sell their stuff. But for me, it’s pretty much where I drop out. The product might be good, maybe even great. I’m just not interested in a 15 minute infomercial.

I myself don't have bench grinder instead I use a belt grinder clamped upside down on my bench with a 120 grit belt and my diamond stone set into a12 inch block of 3 bye 2

This is actually a Comcast/xfinity issue. If I go via my cellular network, it works just fine. If I go via my cable modem, it doesn't. So, anybody else on Comcast/Xfinity, be on the lookout and get around it that way.

Good video as far as restoring a bad chisel to being a good chisel without the aid of a grinder. However, the sharpening system you presented appears to be too cumbersome, especially the center stone. I don't think the company truly understands the method of sharpening chisels or plane blades. This is not a reflection on you (you are awesome!), but on the company. I will never purchase their system. It looks cool, but that is about it. I have seen the Rob Cosman's method of sharpening, and I had the opportunity to be taught how to sharpen by Rob Cosman through his Training the Hand class as a veteran scholarship selectee (Purple Heart Project). I do enjoy your videos and I have my 6-n-1 router base plate in the shop. I look forward to your awesome videos. I do learn and get ideas from them.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! The middle stone doesn't bother me at all though since I was used to it being the same way with my set up. I never remove the middle stone.

I use windex on my diamond stones and it works fine. No need for a special “lapping fluid”. I think it’s sad so many people are “upset” you’re demonstrating a product from someone and might be making money off it. Seems petty and jealous. I like your videos. Bench grinders have their own problems - overheating, space, mess. This set looks very nice and it does seem like a great way to get started. I'm curious about the three different honing compounds...I use the common green chromium oxide compound and am quite satisfied with the results. Do you "feel" a difference using these three compared to (I presume) the single compound you usually use? Nice job, Tamar. Thank you.

I’m not exactly sure of the specs on the honing compounds other than they are equivalent to a certain number grit. I should have compared it to the reg ol green one I have used in the past. You’re right.

Good work, but please announce that you are evaluating donated items at the beginning. You get me to grin every time you mention draws because I remember way back when to talked about the folks that "corrected" your New York pronunciation. Oh, and the lapping fluid? I use one of those little bottles, too. The first one went quickly because I flooded the surface. I have found, however, that just a few drops here and there (I tap the opened spout to spit out a drop) spread out and supply ample lubrication. YMMV, however. 😁

I wouldn’t use a bench grinder to sharpen my chisels. You get a concave radius on the working end. I use a flat whetstone and keep my diamonds for touching up.

I use a belt sander. Takes 2 seconds. I don't like a bench grinder because it makes a curve not straight.

There's no way to flatten the back of a chisel with a bench grinder unless you have one with a diamond wheel that has a wide, perfectly flat and true side edge. A belt sander (hand held or stationary), could work in a pinch but it likely won't be very flat and you'd have to spend a lot of time on the stones afterwards cleaning it up anyway. As for getting to the center plate in your home made holder, why can't you simply swap it to the edge? If they're stuck because the wood has swelled, pry out the plate and enlarge the opening a bit. That's what I had to do. Finally, putting your shiny kit away into it's case and sticking it into a drawer turns sharpening into a "bigger process", that you're less likely to do. The key to quick and easy sharpening is to always have the sharpening supplies out and ready to go. Sounds like a good time for a sharpening station build. 🙂

Why not make the device only have two plates then make the middle plate something you can. Out on top like the black plates. Are there other tools this could be useful for? Seems odd to spend so much on a 14$ chisel.

If I may humbly say, bench grinders have ruined more chisels than they have helped. You have to really know what you're doing when using a bench grinder to fix chisels. You can so quickly ruin the geometry, and you can so easily overheat them and ruin the heat treatment. Just my humble 2 cents. :)

I liked the video. Thank you. I also like the IDEA of the SMS and its appearance. I'm not sold on the specifics of it. As you pointed out, access to the middle stone is limited, making it cumbersome for some operations. I like the idea of the snap-on leather strop overlays, but, I think that if one doesn't clean each stone prior to applying the strops, it'll be a mess. The idea of a case to store all the stuff is great, but probably not all too practical if one sharpens frequently, as one who regularly works wood will want/need to. Generally, sharpening should be frequent and quick: having to take everything out of a storage pouch, clean it after use and then put it all back in a storage pouch negates that. 5000 grit, or equivalent, is probably a little iffy in terms of the finest grit.I have other MPower tools and appreciate their new approaches to old problems, but I'm not sold on this one.

People have been sharpening chisels for centuries. I definitely prefer diamond stones to oil stones, but we really don't need to overthink a full sharpening rig. This seems more like a solution looking for a problem.

I like this channel, but honestly it doesn’t cost that much in my area to send my chisels out to a sharpening service to have them worked on. Maybe $5, even if my chisel's cutting edge has some legitimate dings in it. All I do anymore is touch up the edge a little

Let me try to make your life easier. All that glue buildup? Soak it off with White vinegar before using the diamond stone. I've had to clean many a hobby shop chisel of glue this way. In a container, pour enough white vinegar to cover the glue. Wait until the glue starts to go opaque and then peel it off. Won't come off entirely? Soak again until it does. Will save you a lot of grinding time. Also, if you wipe down a piece with vinegar, it will show all the gluy fingerprints and squeeze out you missed before you finish. Won't raise the grain. Dab with vinegar and wait a minute or so for fingerprints. Then with a little elbow grease, you should be able to rub them right out of the grain. Yes, OUT of the grain. Be careful on joints because if it softens the glue for removal, it can soften the glue in the joint as well. So, don't flood. Repeat until it's gone (or until you sand the rest away). Learned that from an old (literally 90+ years old) cabinet maker.

Use glass cleaner instead of lapping fluid 1/2 a bottle has lasted 3 years for me and I sharpen regularly.

As a complete novice; I didn't even know there were diamond grit stones for sharpening. I use wax and diamond laps from when I did gem cutting. I get stupidly sharp edges because...I didn't know any other way. I thought it's better to have a great steel that holds an edge longer than a budget big box chisel that you need to keep sharpening? (Again I am a novice, most of my sharpening skills are applied to kitchen knives)

If your system gets great results, there is no reason to change. But since I'm not familiar with what you describe, I wonder if it is as fast as diamonds. Most of the ww channels don't advise flattening the back with a diamond stone, by the way. Most advise to get some wet/dry sandpaper and stick it to something very flat and use that to flatten the back. The grit varies but might be 180 or so.

Sadly, Tamar, your videos are becoming more and more like infomercials. I understand the value of sponsorship, and you did add your disclaimer at the end, but I'm sure you know that a bench grinder with 10" wet/dry and stropping wheels and angle adjuster costs 30% less, putting aside the time and storage issues.
