I have always been a fan of the esthetic of the Malm fireplaces but could never justify the eye popping price. Solution, an old one, a grinder and some stove paint rattle cans and we are fancy now. The Malm Lancer 76 is back baby!

@@asquaregarden Naw, I got one for $20 at a yard sale the other day. Couldn’t believe it. Had to leave it and pick up the next morning, found out people were haggling over it. Good thing I asked for a receipt and a sold sign on the thing.

The hard part is getting it installed. Professionals won't touch the installation of the vintage Malm I bought.

That is sad to hear. It’s not that much different than a wood stove to put in.

They arent hard to install.yourself if you are tenacious and a little handy. I also say this as a large man who can muscle them around so forgive me but you can roll then on their base.

Ok but what if it’s painted with that original shiny ceramic (?) Paint and has rust drippings so to speak ?
@Jennifermcintyre
@Jennifermcintyre 11 ай бұрын
I’m here because I have one with the shiny ceramic coating as well. I have several spots where it’s gone and exposed metal. Not sure what to do either 😬

This looks great. I’m thinking about doing this to mine. How is the durability of the paint ?
@asquaregarden
@asquaregarden Жыл бұрын
It’s pretty durable but if you leave it out in the rain it will get rusty again.

Great video! If I only have small spots of rust along the bottom black edge but the rest of it is in good shape, can I lightly sand by hand and spray new coating on? Or do I need to buy a sander and get it down to bare metal?
@asquaregarden
@asquaregarden Жыл бұрын
If I were you I would try to do the bottom first and see how it goes before going all out. The only only concern with that would be color not matching on the paint. Even if you only do the bottom you want to make sure you get to bare metal.

I have a Malm that I want to use outdoors. How is yours holding up? Did you drill any drain holes in the bottom pan?
@asquaregarden
@asquaregarden Жыл бұрын
Mine has a hole at the bottom from the factory. We generally cover it when it rains or snows but I am sure i will need to fix at least parts of it every few years.

What grinder and attachment are you using? I just picked up one of these with rust all over and used a regular sander that I already had with 80 grit to get the paint off, but the rust is still everywhere and not budging with the sander. I’m contemplating taking the pieces apart and soaking in evapo rust (expensive), but not sure which route to go
@asquaregarden
@asquaregarden Жыл бұрын
The grinder is a small Hitachi I picked up at Lowes years ago but you can use whatever brand you find. The wire wheels I got at Harbor freight but if I was to do it again I would try with a flap disk first.

@@asquaregarden Is the paint really needed? I have one (the Zircon model) original to my 1973 house. It is matte black, but I don’t like it. I wish it was another color. The color of steel is beautiful.
@asquaregarden

If you are going to keep it inside then you could definitely go with the raw steel. I considered a different color myself. There were some paints other claiming they could handle the heat. You could also go that route.
