Fox restored an old Stanley Bailey No. 5 plane.
We went for the 'no dialog' style again with this restoration video, with only the sounds of the workshop for the audio track. As such, no explanations of the process were given. If you have any questions/comments, please comment! 😊

Great video! Thanks, I was wondering what was wrong with my No.5. I missed something painfully obvious and easily fixed! Now all I need is a bench grinder.....doh.....!

I foolishly messed up up the bevel angle on the blade with poor sharpening technique. @@SculptyWorks

Just tuned up a dumped nearly new Stanley bailey jack plane. Dumped cos they couldnt adjust the iron. Just needed fine tuning of the mechanism. These planes dont just work. Like a guitar they need setting up n maintaining. The tool survived a recycling centre unscathed because of the box it was in! Lesson keep anything valuable in its box.

I love how you had a scene where you struggled to find a container to soak it in, then at the end use he plane right next to a stack of tubs that look like they were designed for the job 😂

Do you use any specific type of paint for this? I've just bought my first plane to try and bring back to life. Nothing valuable, this is just a practice piece but I'm looking forward to it and want to do a good job of it.

I like the all-in-one paint+primer ones. I think I used Rust-Oleum on this. 👍

I believe I started with 80 grit, then 120, then 220, and finished with 400, and I use 3-in-1 light multi-purpose oil. Water works just fine but will make the cast iron start to rust again incredibly fast if you let it sit.

What paint did you use was is it semi gloss

I believe that was some Krylon All-in-One, probably semi-gloss because I rarely keep gloss paint around. 😉

I had to replay the part where you put it back together about 35 times, you're going way too fast for my eyes, even with the playback speed at .25 and at .5. Slow your work down for others to be able to see
