It took a while to get around to restoring this drill press but it was definitely worth the wait.
Now I just need to make a stand for it and maybe a vintage style control box.
Just to add some more info:
Paid $200 for the drill press, the VFD was $90, bearings and belt $125 and the paint $40.
A new Brobo Walden drill press can be found here for comparison brobo.com.au/product-category... They're not exactly the same but they are very similar.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Some of it is "fake", however. I also hate seeing old castings all filed down and filled in. It's not a show car, it's a tool! Most of those restorations completely destroy any value the tool had.

It is always worth fixing old stuff, and new. As consumers (not businesses where time and money are the bottom line ), we have a social responsibility to keep stuff out of the waste stream and landfill. It is (or should be) the other side of the coin of consumerism. Also old fixed stuff is just cooler. And learning the skills to fix newer value-engineered items is satisfying in it's own way
@markjust86
@markjust86 Жыл бұрын
Also the older stuff is usually better made so it is actually probably going to last a lot longer!
@FliesLikeABrick
@FliesLikeABrick Жыл бұрын
@@markjust86 agreed - however it's also worth people learning how to fix even today's cheaper stuff. Worst case you learn something and it still has to get thrown away (or given to someone who wants to fix it), best case it's fixed and a new skill is learned. Too many people unfortunately think that just because todays stuff wasn't made with repair in mind means it can't be fixed. It can, someone designed and made it in the first place - it just takes an evolving skill set and refusing the pro-consumerism brainwashing that "if isn't worth fixing" or "it can't be fixed"
@markjust86
@markjust86 Жыл бұрын
@FliesLikeABrick since I was a kid, whenever I got some new device or tool, I would take it apart and discover how it works. I have found that a lot of newer items are purposely made so repares are not possible. But you are right, most things can be repaired.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzfaq.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

When a KZfaqr says "let me know if that's something you'd like to see." I imagine that it's just a way of baiting people to comment. Thus showing engagement and helping their videos in the algorithm... But of course I would love to see you both make the metric conversion of the dial and the VFD retro control box. Anything you make is a pleasure to watch and I'm happy to show my engagement for the algorithm!

Just a suggestion. If you get a small powder coating set up with say 30 to 50 thousand KV and and oven, powder paint is faster than waiting for paint to cure, which is important for paints. An old kitchen oven works great as that is what I use. Powder paint is just as labor intense in the cleaning stage as is anything prepped for paint. The surface with tooth such as what a bead blaster produces than is a smooth surface. One drawback with powder paint in preparation is castings. Castings should be baked at 500 degrees for about an hour or so after the part is up to temperature. Castings can and do absorb oils and grease. By baking, it causes it to come out and can be cleaned after cooling so that when you are ready to powder coat, no oils will bubble up and destroy the finish. I went through this with a doctors office scale that you stand on and removing the powder to redo is time consuming and laborious unless you purchase the stripper that is more expensive than a good quality paint stripper. Once set up to do parts, you will enjoy the benefit of powder coating and putting the part to use once cooled. I want to get the Vevor machine and use just the gun and the circuitry because it develops 100KV and is adjustable, something needed. High voltage is good for large flat surfaces but tubing cluster joints need low voltage or no voltage to prevent the Farady Cage effect, the powder will not stick due to the electric field surrounding it. My first time experiencing this was on wing mounts of an Areonca Champ. So with kowing high voltage is great for large flat surfaces, you don't really need a high voltage set up and powder paint is just wonderful. BTW, aluminum castings can be a lot more effort to clean such as engine valve covers. You have to really get the prep work done correctly or suffer contaminants bubbling up to the surface during the cure.

I've inherited my grandfathers old Waldown drill press, he never got rid of a tool, instead finding ways to keep them going. Mine is missing its depth gauge and depth stop. I plan to rebuild it in the future and keep it going for another 70 years.

I have no need for the knowledge imparted in these videos, but I am fascinated by them. I could watch "Pask" watch paint dry and STILL be enthralled......................and when it involves resurrecting a worthy piece of kit its even more intriguing........ Thank you!

If you hold the bottle flat side down when you pour something like your degreaser, it will pour faster and more controllably without glugging and splashing. Thanks for sharing your projects. I've come to really enjoy your videos. 🙂

Pask, I've said this before and will say it again- *make some videos about projects around the house.* Many of us have similar projects to do, and at the worst, the video will serve as entertaining inspiration, and at best, it will provide useful tutorial for those of us doing some of the same things.

My dad used to reman electric motors. Ran the biz out of our garage for several years, until he fixed enough motors locally the work tapered off. Too small of an area to support it full time. He "sold" it to his partner/best friend (he bought our house to get in the country and it was included in the paperwork to make it official) and he did it as a part time side job and not worried about supporting a family. Dad then moved Ma and 2 of my sisters to Memphis, TN, the spring of '85 (I had moved to New Orleans and my oldest sis stayed with an aunt and uncle to finish school them marry her in the Air Force fiance). His partner was occasionally fixing motors last time or two Dad was up (2019) and we stopped by his house, but the subject hasn't come up the last few times we've talked since Dad's passing in '21, so I don't know if he still does. Some of those were good sized motors (2 feet/610mm in diameter).

A nicely designed and built drill press from what I can see. Nice to refurbish it and make it useful again. Every shop has to have at least one...or two drill presses...

Having a drill press around the shop is a very good thing when needed. It is far cooler to have a vintage unit that you restored yourself (bragging rights) than to buy a lesser quality unit (for a higher price). Great job on that restoration. Vintage drill presses can be found for very little money and if you are willing to put in some time and elbow grease, you can have a drill press to be proud of owning.

Old machinery well looked after will always outlast new machinery. I’ve got a Ryobi drop saw that was my Dad’s which he got when I was about 7, I’m now 51 and it’s never missed a beat, similarly a Hitachi TR12 router.
