In this video, I'm restoring an antique Sunbeam Mixmaster Slicer and Shredder Attachment. This attachment is used with the antique Sunbeam Mixmaster Model 7B, among others. After restoring it, I tested out the attachment by slicing and shredding/grating some fresh carrots using my grandmother's Mixmaster 7B.
There is a neat mechanical "safety" feature, in that the slicer/shredder wheels will not rotate unless the lid is closed. Sunbeam was brimming with confidence about this aspect in their old catalog: "And you cannot injure yourself no matter how you use it--the only safe attachment of its kind. This attachment will not operate until the hopper lid is closed." Yeah, that's what the catalog actually states--part of the first sentence was even in italics! Needless to say that wouldn't fly by today's standards.
This is just one of several attachments made for the Mixmaster 7B, and these attachments are getting more difficult to find.
(Note that the two U.S. patents stamped on the hopper lid seem to have nothing to do with this particular attachment. Also, the several U.S. patents listed in the Sunbeam Mixmaster catalog also do not appear to be directed to this particular attachment. Let me know in the comments below if you find a relevant U.S. patent.)
