I found this washstand on Facebook Marketplace and brought it home for $40, which is about the highest I'd be willing to pay for a piece in this rough of a shape. I knew the paint and shellac layers would be quite the challenge to remove going into it, but these makeovers are usually the most rewarding in the end.
When I noticed that the entire piece was 100% solid wood, I immediately decided that I want to stain it; this meant that I'd have to do a very thorough job of removing the layers of gunk. Another challenge of scraping this much is trying to avoid digging into the wood with the scraper by accident.
I wanted to raise the height of the piece, so I gave it some tall legs with extra shelf space at the bottom, using what was originally the top of the piece. The vacant space behind the missing door was turned into a wine storage space with a removable rack.
If you enjoy the video, please hit the like button and let me know what you think :)

Wonderful video Andy, as usual. To be honest, I won't ever achieve your quality , but I simply watch the videos to admire the craftsmanship. And thank you for the bonus link at the end about the canvas! We have been looking for something like this for our home! Nice touch scratching the canvas to show the quality of their work! lol

So great Andy! I never would have thought of raising it with tall legs and adding a shelf for fear of it looking 'top heavy', but it turned out to be a perfect decision. Thanks for sharing your process and of course the humorous edits. Looking forward to your next one.

I inherited an old wash stand that my grandfather repaired years ago, but the original owner never picked it up. It sat in his garage/workroom for decades. My parents inherited his house and mom found that wash stand. As they were moving it into the house, they discovered the granite slab used for the top wasn't actually attached, and took it off to made the stand easier to move. Imagine their surprise to discover the granite slab was actually an old tombstone, lol.

@@carolinejohnson22 lol no. The rest of the story is that grandpa used to pick up odd jobs for extra money when his 3 kids were little. Our city was moving an old cemetery and there were a number of tombstones that were unusable. So he helped remove them. He also used some fragments to floor the enclosed back porch. That's where you find names and dates on some stones, lol.

Oh wow, I have an antique washstand like the one you had; before refurbishing. Mine still has the door on it and it's in such wonderful shape because in the mid 70's my beautiful Mom refinished it. She was a dab hand at bringing back antiques to life. When we moved into our Victorian home in 1972 every single piece of wood in the house, including pocket doors, banisters and stairs were painted over. It took my Mom at least a full year to fully restore the wood back in our house to it's original charm. I bet if she were alive she'd be watching your channel and taking notes!

When I first saw you stain the wine rack black I thought, "Oh, no, not more black furniture!" Then you stained the rest of it walnut and it looks gorgeous. And the black drawer pulls make the whole piece come together. This is really beautiful.

The screws made me think about Tom Johnson. He is a YT'er and has an entire lifetime of knowledge and that of his father who did the same job. He saves the old nails and screws and reuses them. He wants to keep all the furnitures parts together. It makes sense if you are restoring instead of reimagining. One of this guys voodoo tricks is his clamping. Great guy, knowledge out the yingyang.

The act of restoration is to repair, renew or reinvigorate the condition of sth. I would therefore agree that it is a restoration... and an excellent one at that.
@peoplecallmepeechez
@peoplecallmepeechez Жыл бұрын
@@familiecole I don't know about that. Most definitions I could find for the term restoration implies that it is bringing something back to a former condition. So the fact that he visually changed the look of the piece means he's creating something new rather than restoring it to it's original look. I believe this falls more under refurbished
@familiecole
@familiecole Жыл бұрын
@@peoplecallmepeechez it is of course subjective but I stand to disagree. The condition has been restored. The function and design have been amended.
