What I love: the moment you wipe off the dust, wipe on the Danish oil and that gorgeous grain jumps out. Always the money shot for me.

Great job on a great design furniture. Did the same restoration on a small vintage writing desk made from solid wood/veneered mahogany some 15 years ago. After sanding to 240 and filling some voids with a mix of dust/glue, I buffed up scratches and lite spots (actually the whole thing) with 2-3 coats of a varnish made of 5x strong powder coffee (Nescafe Gold :) and then 3 coats of water soluble floor lacquer (Trestjerners). The desk is (heavily) used every day and not one sign of wear and tear can be seen.

It is a brave man who sands veneer. I tend to go down the strip, or scrub with metho and steel wool path. Sand paper as a final resort. But each to their own. Great outcome.

It sounds counter productive, but if you slightly dampen the tea towel before you apply the iron, the steam actually works better than dry heat to remove water stains! Nice work!

great refinish. Just an FYI, you want wooden drawer runners to be a softer wood than the drawers since it's much easier to replace worn drawer runners than worn drawer sides.

Mike Williams Veneer is real wool albeit a very thin sheet of it. It’s a cost saving alternative. It has the look and color do the real wool (for instance, walnut or cherry) but without having to use a solid piece of it. This makes sense especially on large sections because you can increase uniformity too.

I just finished doing a 1940's mahogany dresser and cabinet- and used ACETONE AND STEEL WOOL (no sandpaper!) . Works awesome and took off the old cruddy finish wonderfully. Then, finish the firniture with FORMBY's TUNG OIL- a gorgeous natural oil finish. I applied three thin coats of ting oil and it looks great. More natural than plastic looking polyurethane. Formby's is real natural tung oil- not the fake "tung oil" from others. Just my 2 cents from experience.

I have a similar cabinet from the 50s but its a TV console with record player and radio. It still gets power, I was thinking of doing something with it like you did with yours. Might make some coin on the equipment as well if the tube still works those can be worth a small fortune. Im gonna drag it out after my next home improvement store trip.

To remove watermarks from wood: try mixing a thick paste of olive oil and salt and rub onto the wood - leave it for about 30 minutes. The salt draws out the moisture and the oil feeds the wood.

Great video. The best way to remove water Mark's I find is to apply meths to the ring and flash a lighter to it, blow it out immediately and the heat brings the moisture that's trapped under the finish to the surface and evaporates. Much the same as the iron procedure you demonstrated but with more success. A professional restorer showed me this trick.

The old runners stayed on for years with a few staples. Glue and brad nails would be permanent, so the screws were not needed.

I'm always late to the party, but this is amazing. I have a sideboard sitting in my dad's garage for the last 6 years that I need to restore. It's not too fad but I live in flats (ground floor) so I have always put it off. I remember there's a little damage in one of the sliding doors, but can't remember much more. I am determined this year but need to know if i need to strip any old finish?

I am trying to tidy up some solid wood dining room furniture after the cocker spaniel puppy has grown out of scratching everything. I’ve sanded down the scratches which has removed the original stain/varnish. I’ve tried some ronseal dark oak stain which is about the right colour. However, it does not sink into the wood? I presume it is because it’s a water based stain? I cannot find oil based stains and varnishes anywhere locally? What would you recommend?

Great video! I have a question.. can I use some glossy top coat? if yes what do you recommend? I have very dark teak dresser and i wanted to sand it, make it lighter, maybe some parts paint in duck egg colour and then on the top some glossy product.

I think it is still better build than most modern budget furniture such as IKEA. They go a long way in good circumstances, but not nearly as long compared to quality woodworking. That being said, I do still use IKEA furniture and such since they can go a long way for the money and quality woodworking is not that affordable unless you can build it yourself, and the latter one is not accessible for me yet.

Brecht Schatteman this might actually be vintage IKEA. We found a 1960s IKEA in our garage, designed by Erik Wörtz. Quite good quality! I think they started dropping in quality in the 1990s
