Restoring the WHOLE UNDERCARRIAGE on the 1973 Camaro Z28!! Who NEEDS a LIFT??
Do it right or don't do it at all! This week I figured it was now or never to overhaul my whole undercarriage of my 1973 Camaro Z28..Next week will be the engine bay! =)
Products Used (NOT SPONSORED):
1) 2 Quarts of Eastwood Rust Encapsulator
2) 2 More Cans of Eastwood's Internal Frame Rail Coating
3) 3" Wire Wheels and flap discs to grind off rust

You definitely aren't afraid of a challenge . Your work is outstanding. If you are looking for quality brake and fuel lines, look into Inline Tube. Great Job! You cleaned it up nicely. With it having a numbers matching block and relativity low miles, I would keep it as close to factory as possible. I would just upgrade the driveability aspect. Things like rear disc, SS brake lines and hoses, poly bushing front, back and sub frame. Maybe electric fans and pro flo 4 FI. I would also replace the heater core and clean the air box, behind the firewall and lower front fenders really good while the inter fenders are out. That's where the Camaros rot.

Hey Ryan, you knocked it out of the park again. Floors are beautiful. I've said it before, much respect for your patient thoughtful approach. The finish line will produce a winner that you will be proud of. Would you consider powder coating the core support? I've done it on my inner fenders and core support on several of my car restorations and it really holds up nicely. Glad you have more garage space, however there is no such thing as a "big enough" garage! Stay safe and healthy.

Ryan, that thing is mint. you hardly ever see one that original. it still had the axle tag on the rear diff. that very rare, they are usually discarded during a fluid change or if there was any work on the rear axles. those shocks are the old AC Delco Power Lift Air Shocks. the Camaros from that era sit low in the back. in the mid 70's to about the mid 80's the Funny Car look was really popular with hot rodders and those air shocks were a quick way to get that look. you could get them install at the dealership back in the day. however they also ride like crap. the aftermarket reproduction shocks are not bad, but if you want a quality ride QA1 makes a decent set of shock for them. QA1 bought the Performer AIS design for Edelbrock a few years ago. I have a set of the Edelbrock AIS shocks on my second gen and i love them. they made a world of difference in how the car handled compared to the cheap parts store replacements that were on it when i bought it. one other thing to note. that front bumper is original as well. In 73 the federal government increase the the standards for low speed impacts, so the bumper got a redesign, there is some extra reinforcement in the bumper and the front is a little more flat than the 70-72 bumpers. so it a one year only piece that was only used in 73. don't get rid of it or replace it with an aftermarket. it worth it to have it rechromed if it is rusted or pitted, rather than replaced. one last thing. all the 73 Camaros were built in Norwood Ohio. they used a red oxide primer on all the cars so the under side should be painted red oxide to be factory correct. personally i think the black looks better, but i figured i would share that in case you were going to try to maintain the originality of it.
@RyanSampsonRPh
@RyanSampsonRPh 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for another helpful comment Shad! I knew about the special 1 year only front bumper so I am planning on having it re-chromed. I just read another comment about the red oxide color for my Norwood car; I have to think some things over now. I like the black a lot more but I also like originality too so it’s a tough decision 😔!

As long as you knock off the loose rust with a wire wheel and wipe down the area you are spraying (IPA or wax and grease remover) it bonds to any surface rust without any crazy sanding like you would normally need to do with primer. Thanks for sticking with me Terry! Just needed a fun car to drive around in to keep me motivated on plugging away on the Datsun so that is why I am doing a “quick” resto on the Z28 then back on the 240z. For now I am putting all the stock components back on and if it needs more stopping power I can always change it out later👍. Just planning on changing the rear shocks and maybe getting some coilovers for the front and that should do it for this car!

I think we've all done something like this camaro. Love the videos. Subbed for the genius/insanity that is your 240Z. I see projects where they throw money at it. Can't wait to see the sweat equity Z! Much love from Merida.
