Scooters should fit in accessible rooms. How about enforcing the people who book these rooms to actually need them. You must fill out a form before you board the ship. They ask for dimensions of your mobility device. They should resolve this before a guest shows up to board.

Sometimes these handicap rooms are not available. On our last MSC cruise, all ADA rooms were booked. My TA and I kept trying for 3 months in case one would become available. Fortunately, for us we have a folding scooter so whether the room is handicapped or not our scooter still fits. Your reports every day are one of my first things to watch, Tony. Thanks for your hard work. I had an incident back in March '22 when I broke my knee toward the end of my cruise and had to use a wheel chair for the last 2 days. Everyone was wonderful about it and I had nothing but praise for the crew over their help with me. I agree that a scooter left in the hall is a major impediment and should not be allowed. @lindseysharon259
@lindseysharon259 4 ай бұрын
@@whelmo14it’s likely they don’t need an accessible room. If your only mobility concern is traveling longer distances then a standard room is perfectly fine. I know multiple people that would never book an accessible room simply because they know they’re limited and other people actually need accessible bathrooms, etc. It likely doesn’t occur to many people that their scooters may not fit, or (if they do fit through the door) that they’d lose a lot of space to storing a scooter. I myself have had to use a scooter after recovering from surgery, but I never needed it in my house. It was only when I went out grocery shopping or to check the mail. To me this is also an issue of modern ships not keeping up with the needs of cruisers. Scooters are so much more accessible now that it’s really opened up cruising to people that otherwise wouldn’t have thought of going on a ship before, but new builds aren’t designed with that in mind. Addressing scooter size limits is a great start, but requiring that all units on new ships have accessible sized doors and entryways would be even better. Though that’s never going to happen.

My wife is in a wheelchair and scooters in the hallway BLOCK the hallway so wheelchairs CANNOT pass by. Lucky for us, she is able to make her way by the scooters while I fold up the wheelchair to get by "blockage". We do have a scooter but do not bring it on ships because it takes up a lot of room in the elevators and hallways. At least with the wheelchair we can fold it up in narrow passages and she can make her way slowly for a few feet. We always book as early as possible to try to get an accessible cabin. On our last 3 Princess cruises we were checked, in our cabin, to make sure we had a wheelchair/mobility device. Twice by our cabin steward and once by a housekeeping manager. This was probably because we were told that booking a accessible cabin without a wheelchair/mobility device is considered a fraudulent booking and that cabin could be taken away and given to someone who needs it.

When I was on the Celebration, I got stuck with an accessible cabin that was almost all of the way aft. There was a guy up the hall that parked his scooter in the hall every night as well as multiple times during the day. I could not get by in my wheelchair (My electric wheelchair had been damaged by the airline, so I was struggling to get by with my manual chair.) I called Guest services multiple times every day, but nothing was done. There were times that I resorted to going around to the hall on the opposite side of the ship, which was often blocked by carts and ANOTHER scooter. There were times that I just gave up and went back to my cabin. I was under the impression that leaving a scooter in the hall already wasn’t allowed. If I can’t get an accessible room, I don’t book my cruise. You would think that people would be more considerate. One thing I see is that a lot of scooter riders simply use them because they can’t walk long distances. They have no consideration for people who can’t walk at all.

Concerning scooters/cabin, this has been the general rule for a number of years now. My scooter at the widest point is only 18in wide, fits in normal cabin doors and disabled cabins as well. I personally agree 100% that some of the scooters being taken aboard are ridiculously to big, take up most of the lift space and if left in the hallway creates an issue for cleaning staff and their trolleys, plus as already mentioned a fire hazard as in blocking the flow of the corridors.

On our last cruise on the Wonder, there were 2 very large i mean like Really large red scooters in the hallway that took up more then half the hallway but they didn't seem to cause a problem for us getting our luggage past them or the stewards carts either. One day one of them were parked out a bit further and the stewards weren't able to get passed it they were knocking on there door to move it closer to the wall but noone ever came out. I get it...if your a big guy you need a big scooter. I hope they don't start picking on these people now with mobility issues they have enough problems to worry about. As someone that is disabled and travels carnival cruise line their disability friendliness is quite lacking. Part of it is due to the disconnect from Carnival and the Cruise Port Terminal Agents and that has caused some issues with my health in the past. Personally I just need wheelchair assist getting up and down from the ship at the cruise terminal due to my back and lung damage but am fine otherwise. I do believe they should have a few more Handicap accessable cabins since a big portion of their cruisers are handicap restricted and they tend to sell out of these rooms fast. Restricting the size of the scooter is fine as some people just get those massive ones and take up the entire hallway / elevator. And the fact that they will rent you a scooter for your sailing in a good solution if your traveling via train, bus, plane, or car as you can get wheelchaired to the ship and then issues a scooter vs having to bring yours all the way to the terminal. I do think they really need to have a handicap elevator with a bellman inside to help the handicap passengers get from floor to floor without having to wait hours of time for an elevator to be empty enough to get into. Maybe issue a special sticker for their sail and sign card that they show the bellman to get on board the elevator. I saw a woman who missed her excursion due to being handicap as every time the elevator came to her floor it would be packed. After 3 hours she finally got on an elevator and went to guest services to complain and get a refund as she was literally trapped on an upper floor with no way down.

About the scooters, All of that language is already in your contract! The contract is actually more restrictive than what they just posted. The contract actually states that you will be denied boarding WITHOUT compensation if your scooter can't fit in your room. The article states that they will refund your money. We ran into that issue with Princess last year. We own Pride Victory 10s, which are too wide to fit through the standard cabin doors, and when we booked, there was NO accessible balcony cabins available. We were not willing to downgrade to an interior, or pay the premium for a suite. We were going to muddle through without the scooters, BUT just before we cruised, my spouse broke some ribs, and we decided then and there to just contact Scootaround and rent the small scooters for our cruise. Best decision ever. Our next cruise is on Carnival and we were able to secure an accessible cabin, so we will be able to bring our own scooters for that trip AND keep them in the room..

Plus taking the extra day at the end meant not losing the relaxation benefits of cruising by having to disembark early and be in a rush to get to the airport. I could have a leisurely breakfast on board and then disembark at my own convenience (within cruise ship’s guidelines).

Not leaving scooters in the halls is a good thing it is a hindrance! Imagine in an emergency! Forget, emergency for a minute. When the crew has to use their carts for food delivery, and room cleaning, it’s annoying. I have also noticed strollers in the halls, those should also be looked into.

You can't know by looking at someone if they need a scooter or not. If someone has COPD, a scooter may be the best option for them. COPD prevents a person from using a self-propelled wheelchair or walking long distances so canes and walkers are not viable options.

Tony, I am so glad you give us so much updated information. I have travelers that would not be able to cruise without their scooters. I love Scoot-a-round and the way they help at the terminal to get them "fitted" with the scooter and head up to the ship. I think it would be awesome if they had a chart that would tell us a "size/classification" of scooter that would fit when we book a room for clients. Maybe Carnival needs to put a certain shape on the rooms on the accesibility map that would help us inform them of the scooter size that would fit their room. Also, if rental companies that are at the port could label them with a "size/classification" it would help a bunch! Something to make it easier for the Travel Agent to help reduce the time and hassle when the customer gets to the port to board. Thank you again! BTW, you look so much healthier since your surgery! I hope you recover quickly.

I think it's a good thing, not allowing scooters to be left unattended in the hallway. On the flipside, I think with the growing number of scooter users, Carnival should accommodate users with more large door cabins. Yes, I'm a scooter user Tony, however I use my walker on my cruises for now. Love your channel. PEACE ☮️

Carnival or RCCL really has never allowed scooters in the halls but apparently that rule is never enforced. if you read the cruise contract and info it always says that the scooter must fit in the door and in the room and they are not allowed in the hallway.

NCL already requires your scooter to fit into the room. While I have seen reports where the cabin attendant will store for you but NCL says keep in your cabin. They have a preferred vendor who rents scooters that fit into the cabins -- as long as you do not mind climbing over the scooter to get to the bathroom. ;-)

Tony, the rule about scooters in cabins has been thee case on P&O for over 10 years. In fact you have to book an accessible cabin or a suite to take a scooter on the ship. The rule is very strict and not even folding scooters are allowed in ordinary cabins. I believe it is the same for Cunard out of the UK.

Re: Scooters - I cruised on a 12-day Carnival cruise and there were scooters EVERYWHERE! What really pissed me off was seeing people walking away from their scooters, as if they were never disabled. But when it came to waiting on lines, these same people were screaming DISABILITY to get priority boarding and disembarking. I recall seeing quite a few of those Scooter people walking around in port, enjoying waking around without their scooter present. now, for those truly diabled I wish Carnival had tables without chairs so those people forced to live in their scooters could just ride up to their table and not block the walk ways for other passengers. In the dining room we had to get up everytime a scooter came by because there simply wasn't a walking area wide enough to accommodate the scooter riding by AND seated guests remaining Seated - What happens to those scooters if there is an emergency evacuation while we are in the dining room? Do they really expect mobile challenged people to be allowed to be given priority during exiting while the rest are running and panicking? Not to mention the disturbances of having to stop eating just to get up to allow those scooters to get by.

I thought the policy was already that your mobility devices had to fit in your cabin and could not be left in the gangway (hallway). I use a rollator walker now. I have no problem with this policy. I booked an accessible balcony cabin for my cruise in January/February 2024 and for my upcoming cruise in August 2024. There was plenty of room for me to use it in the cabin. A large scooter might not fit very well. To have one, you might need a suite cabin.

Scooters. Here's an idea. They're talking about renting out scooters that are smaller to passengers. How about this? They set aside a room for the passengers' scooters and then supply foldable wheelchairs to take the passengers to their rooms. Then when the passengers need the scooters when they go ashore they just get wheeled to that room and take their scooter to go to shore? As for Silversea paying to change passengers airline tickets...that might cost them the amount they just made from the cruise that just happened. LOL. The logistics are just mindboggling.

I use a power chair due to a debilitating stroke . I totally support this change and I hope carnival backs this up. When we sailed on the Mardi Gras I had to do a loop around because of scooter’s blocking the hall way we book a fully accessible cabin so I can get through the doors , bathroom, etc. there was plenty of room to park the chair in the cabin., When you cannot get into your cabin due to inconsiderate people it just sucks, especially when carnival and I’m sure other ships don’t make people move them out of the halls.

That’s been Carnival’s scooter policy for several years. I guess they are finally starting to enforce it. If the scooter will not fit through the cabin doorway, you need to book an accessible cabin. That’s usually not a problem on Carnival, however on the new Mardi Gras class ships, only about half the cabins will accept scooters of any size, because the cabin door and the cabin itself is too narrow for scooters.

Scooters left in the hallways never should've been allowed. However, as a wheelchair user that absolutely needs an accessible cabin, I'm afraid everyone with a scooter will now book an ADA room even though many are capable of stepping up into the bathroom. It is already sometimes difficult to find sailings with ADA cabins still available (unless you are booking way out). It is too bad there isn't a designated 'parking area' for the scooters.

Perhaps if cruises quietly offered a discount for those who book them with valid placards? Or medical disclosures signed by a physician? I agree that this is a possible outcome and it angers me. Charge suite rates for ADA rooms that can only be discounted with proof of disability.

I think scooters need to be in cabins. I am mobility challenged with a cane and sometimes a rollator. It is very hard going down the hall when scooters and strollers are everywhere. I know the room stewards have carts but they dont stay in the hall longer than necessary. I also understand needing a larger scooter due to being "fluffy" because I am a heavy person. Many times there just arent enough accessible cabins. I propose maybe more accessible cabins or at least wider doors. I am on a cruise in September where I counted only 10 accessible cabins for a ship of 4200. Not really great, but I will survive. I can deal without the accessible cabins so people with wheelchairs can enjoy them. It does become an issue though.

I have a scooter -a transformer type that folds up and is easy to get in and out of the cabin. (I can actually drive it in without folding it up but it does take up space in the room so we fold it up.) I have never seen a SMALL scooter that is available for rental...they are usually the cadillac version. I have seen folks park them near their room -in a larger corridor area and I never felt they were in the way. Kinda sad. I'm not a big fan of Carnival anyway...so strike 2.

As a wheelchair user, not a scooter, I have had issue passing scooters left in hall as their is not enough room for both width wise. However on another note, that passenger leaving said scooter in hall should book a handicap room as the doorways are wider than a regular cabin. Maybe the scooter rider did not know that availability when they booked.

Yes, probably scooters and even electric wheelchair size needs to be controlled (once you get to a certain size of unit you would have to stay in an Accessible cabin that can accommodate the unit inside), I have seen some very large units being used, on small ships that also can become a hazard for people around them when being used. They are so big, they can not be manoeuvered into a room, or take up the whole hallway, especially on older ships, and on one cruise there were 3 of them "stored" for the night in the elevator stairwell lobby!! Rental scooters for on-ship use have been around for a while now.

I have to agree with the cruise lines on the scooters (as well as strollers). My husband has neurological and balance issues. He uses a cane and can trip easily. This hasn't been a big issue for the most part but we have been on cruises where they are parked in the hallwasys. I feel bad for the cabin stewards trying to navigate around them. My hubby injured his knee pretty bad on the Allure (it just blew, nothing to do with ship). We had to borrow a wheel chair from the infirmary for about 3 days. We always parked it in our cabin. I would have never left it in the hallway. Beside, I would think fire laws wouldn't allow the hallways to be blocked. If there's an emergency, everyone needs to have a clear way out. My 2 cents... Enjoyed your video as always Tony....🙂

I have some neuro issues that cause me to stumble and walk into walls. I am weighing really hard if I want to get a new service dog to help me navigate the world without falling. My last guy was awesome and new when I needed his help and when I didn't need his help. There are accessibility issues with businesses not understanding the federal laws in the US. As you stated navigating a corridor with scooters parked in it and not in the rooms of the user would be dangerous. I already bounce off of walls and fall down a lot. I haven't given in yet to use a cane, it just isn't as good as my service dog was, and an extra thing to have in my hands. Then you add rough seas even just a small amount of motion and my balance gets worse. Due to arthritis, I do use scooters in grocery stores, but trying to fix that with strength training. Scooter users need to put their scooters in their own cabins and not leave them in corridors that could be dangerous for those of us who have other issues.
