Retaliation Zhin Isn't As Good As You Remember... (Paladins)

Retaliation is one of the most beloved old talents that was removed from Paladins many years ago. Now it's back in the Truly Talented LTM and... the rose tinted glasses are strong. This talent is fun, yes, but it's not nearly as good as we all remember. It's still more engaging than Smolder, at least!

Retaliation Zhin was good because of Zhin's old cards. If you increased the duration of billow and bought chronos 3, you could spam billow and counter and basically be immune to all damage for 12 seconds every 14 seconds. Chavsberry has a really good video on this in the archived playlist on his channel.

Ah the good old cards, it was my main build back in the day, increased counter duration, healing for every countered attack, willow speed or cd reduction, chronos 3 and you were mostly inmortal, you only had like 2 seconds of downtime between habilites where you could die

I liked that he always spoke his mind and wasn't afraid to get controversial. I didn't agree with everything he said but I respect him for actually saying it.

Chavsberry had such an influence on me man, that and his Blood Reaper Koga video. i met him in ranked and got him to say my favorite catchphrase (something retarded i thought was funny 6 years ago, don't remember what it was now). so happy to see the top comment on this video honouring him. he said it was really good as a hard counter pick to Barik/Ruckus and just other characters with DPS ults that you could just eat the whole thing. it's a term shield you can't be hooked out of essentially and on a hyper mobile character. Chavsberry's dauntless video also got me into the game which is now the only game I've played more than Paladins (4500 hrs vs 4300) and even managed to get to a level where I can make a bit of money off of it so I got him to thank for that sidegig.

No one shall diss retaliation. It was good and fun when it was in game. When the LTM came all i wanted was to play this talent, but it isnt like it used to be.

Because the old cards are gone, no increased counter duration, nor healing per counter hit

aggree I would like to have that "finish them" whirl talent rather than... yomi... which turn Zhin into a range damage champion instead of being a flank...

the moment that made me decide to keep playing paladins, was retaliating a ruckus on point to save the team. May not have been a meta talent but it led to cool moments.

it would be annoying if it was meta, i'm happy it was a niche playstyle that was really good in some matchups and really rough in others

The problem with Retaliation was the addition lock out after the first counter they added over the years in my opinion. That and even his regular counter today dont do well VS champions that can burst you down while Zhin is stuck in animation after the first swing

Retaliation was really good with the old cards and agaist hitscans. On Console, he was basically a tank when it worked

I played Vivian with sapper rounds and it was a nightmare dealing with retaliation zhin

Retaliation was... better, but at the same time, it wasn't exactly good. It was good if you wanted to rush against a noob team and just massacre them, or when there was a Ruckus on the enemy team because Ruckus couldn't cancel his ult back then, so, if he ulted he was instantly dead, similar to how Androxus can nearly instantly kill Terminus with Godslayer if Terminus ults. In rarer occasions, when you'd go against someone smarter that would shoot the counter, then dodge, then kill you, it could properly be used as a defensive skill because you could walk backwards with it and get behind cover before they could kill you (like Androxus). On the other hand, it was also frustrating to play against when it did work, and most of the time it would just leave you in a defensive instance where you couldn't do anything for a long time, because no one would shoot it.

Retaliation is bugged(something new...) Every proc should refresh duration of counter and it's not refreshing after hit.

And a good drawback would be to not reduce the CD on misses, old Damba didn't had that, only on a card.

You played him on the worst map for flanks, with a bad loadout, against a team that does not have at least 2 rapid fire champions. Sorry but of course he wouldn't be good in this situation. You pick the talent you think would be good based on the enemies' picks and in this case Retaliation was not a good choice. Having both Retaliation and Yomi on Zhin would be healthy for him by making him have 2 different playstyles based on enemy picks.
