Every year us railfans up here in PA and NJ still get to see the HHP-8's still in action pulling the annual Holiday Extra trains. There MARC though not Amtrak, but still long live the HHP-8's!!!!

They were originally called Bananas due to their shape when viewed from broadside and some creative engineer named each one, eg., "Anna Banana, Diana Banana," etc. But a few years later "Hippo" caught on due to their appearance from the front resembling a hippopotamus' nose, plus "HHP."

I actually saw the HHP-8 locomotives from MARC on September 4 and 6 in 2021 but because this video was made in 2017 the replacement plan has changed.

Breaking News: MARC is actually conducting a refurbishment program for the HHP-8s. So they will continue to see service.

MARC may have owned the HHP-8s, however, AMTRAK operated them, as AMTRAK is the contracted operator (and M&R contractor) for MARC. The M&R shops for AMTRAK and MARC are Wilmington, DE (north) and Ivy City (south). The Chargers that replaced the HHP-8s in AMTRAK service did the same in MARC service. The last HHP-8 in MARC service is not even in MARC livery; it's a rare-air locomotive in MDOT (Maryland Department of Transportation) livery; I have a suspiscion that it is on it's way to the B&O Railroad Museum - as it is the default destination for retiring MARC rolling stock. You can see this odd-duck HHP-8 in Ivy City.

And it will doublehead with aem-7 915 every Veterans Day when it pulls

I did not realize they made the HHP in 1992. I thought they were made when the Acela's started in 2001.

I got to ride behind a HHP-8. I also got to in the cab of a an ALP-44 on the NJT. The AEM-7 is a sister to the ALP-44.

Hey, MARC back in 2017 did a project on refurbishing their HHP-8s which was very successful, unlike Amtrak, they never considered this. MARC plans to keep their HHP-8s by 2019 or 2020.

Being a person that lives in Maryland and a common rail fanning person I’ve noticed less hhp-8 on Marc trains and I saw the the first two sc-44 a few days before I posted this sadly I couldn’t get camera to work could’ve gotten some good shots
