I believe the retirement crisis will get even worse. Many struggle to save due to low wages, rising prices, and exorbitant rents. With homeownership becoming unattainable for middle-class Americans, they may not have a home to rely on for retirement either.

Got it! Buying stocks during a recession when prices are down could be a good move. You might get them at a lower price and sell later when they go up. Just do your homework and be aware of the risks before diving in!

Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same number of years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through a wealth manager, and my dad through the 401k.

This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Its unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $287k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

The best course of action in the current market is to work with an investment advisor, especially for near-retirees. I've been working with a coach for a year now, primarily because I lack the depth of knowledge and mental toughness to handle these recurrent market conditions, even though I've already made over $320K in profits. It's evident that there are more aspects of the market that average people are unaware of than investment advisors are.

Don't be confuse buying the dip in a bear market, with guaranteed future returns. Just because that company is down 60% + from ATH does NOT make it a sound long-term investment. Make sure you're investing in great companies. kudos to Sylvia nicolas.

FIRE is a great concept. However, people often forget in order to retire from something, they need to have built the capital. And to build the capital - you need to have a high income, either from work or business - and invest it prudently to enjoy passive income in the future. Which inevitably means you would need to endure stress at least for a portion of your life. If you have a mediocre job that only covers your existing bills - it is not possible to retire at all, no matter how much you try to save the pennies. Conclusion: put effort in acquring skills that will give you a high income to begin with. Totally agree with curbing the useless consumption though, no matter what level of income. Less material possessions = higher quality of life.

So true; this is me. I achieved early retirement but only after decades of high earning, high consumerism and poor health. So you're going to sacrifice at least some health and considerable time to get to the point where you can retire early and not live in poverty. I only wish I had been deliberate in planning my early retirement about 10 years before I actually started getting serious about it (after suffering a stroke). Even then, after recovering from the stroke, it took me years to start getting myself partially retired, and years more to get properly retired (never 100% though). I don't think anyone needs to achieve "full" retirement, that's not actually desirable, but that's a whole other discussion.

Am 58 retiring next year but the thought of retirement gives me weakness. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you never imagined to happen. It’s so difficult for people who are retired and have no savings or loved ones to fall back on.

True, It has never been easier to understand how to build your money after retirement than it is right now with the inflation, when you may study and experience a completely variegated market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor. The impacts of the U.S. dollar's gain or fall on investments, in my opinion, are complex.

Even if you’re not skilled, it is still possible to hire one. I was a project manager and my personal portfolio of approximately $850k of my retirement pension took a big hit in April due to the crash. I quickly got in touch with a financial-planner that devised a defensive strategy to protect my funds and make profit from my portfolio this red season. I’ve made over $250k since then.

What can i do? I am 58 years old and on the cusp of retirement. I have been incapacitated since 2009. My wife is retiring at the age of 53 in three months and my $750k portfolio is down to $492k. While we were both still in good health and could enjoy spending time outdoors doing the things we loved to do, we wanted to retire. Since our marriage of 29 years ago, we have been investing and saving money in anticipation of this. It's a good idea to get married to someone who shares your views on this. To retire earlier than your colleagues, you and your partner will need to work together. To your first point, I can definitely relate.

@@edward.abrahamI agree, , I totally agree, I'm 54 and just retired with about 1.2 million in outside retirement funds, no debt and very small dollars in retirement funds compared to my balance of portfolio over the past 3 years to date. tbh, the role of the Fin-advisor can only be overlooked, not denied. just do your research to find a reputable one.

when you're doing something you like , earning good profit and no one is your boss , it's as good as being retired . You are correct. Studies have shown those who retire early, providing they stay active and engaged out live those who retired at normal age of 65-67. I am jealous that I couldn't retire at 38 like you, but planning to walk away at 55, when we will be financially able. Retirement also means doing what you want, because you can, instead of working at a stressful job because you have too!!

Your money is stagnant when you save, I will advise you buy stocks with market-beating yields and shares that at least keep pace with the market for a long term. For a successful long-term strategy I recommend you seek the guidance of a broker or financial advisor.

Agreed, the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around 300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

Hi Jean, great video! I'm 40 this year, and I've just tendered my resignation and retreat from toxic workplace environment. The micro-managing boss requirement had make me feel so suffocating that I had to go for ECG to check that my health is ok. I do concur with you, health matter more than high paying job. I don't want to end up spending all my hard-earned money treating my illness in the hospital!

I was lured by good money n title ended up with a toxic abusive boss who treated me like a servant attacking me at work n I was so afraid to report him to HR didn’t know my rights n scared I lose th le job so I endured n tried to even end my life few times but in the end he plotted to kick me out gave me unreasonable KPI to fail me n get me out turn out he wanted to promote his secretary ti my post so they both gang up and this happened in an international hotel chain group which I can’t name here in Singapore - point is no job no money is worth sacrificing your dignity your worth of self n your life! The toxic work culture is pervasive worse after covid it’s truly dog eat dog plan early retirement t get out of the toxic rat race

Good afternoon! Yep, agree with you especially about health and intuitive living. I can already feel such big differences in myself between 20s, 30s, and now early 40s when it comes to traveling and living day-to-day life in general, and it isn't just health, it's also the level of enthusiasm, worries, fears (i.e. I could backpack all over the world in my 20s and 30s without worries, but now that I'm older, I often worry about flying, getting sick, etc.). I'd like to add too that if we think we can't afford to retire yet, then let's not wait until retirement to do some of things we want to do while we're still working. It puzzles me when people say they want to wait until retirement like 60 to travel the world. By then, naturally, our knees and hips won't be as good, our dietary needs will be more fussy exactly like you said, etc. It's no fun traveling the world with all those little issues that just come to us naturally as we age. Also, many people often say they can't afford to retire sooner than the official age like 65, but then this is another topic to discuss I guess. "How much is enough to retire with?" because we might not need as much as we think if we pursue a simpler, humbler, healthier life with minimum stress sooner than later, right? And if we don't need as much, then we may be able to afford to retire sooner than we think!

I agree with you. I am a Singaporean and retired in Ipoh, Malaysia 10 years ago at age 42. Our time is precious and everyday is busy but it is on our own time, own target. We enjoyed every single day with our hobbies including searching for delicious food in our day trip drive to other Malaysia states.

This is sooo true! We always think that we need to work and save to have money to look after ourselves if we are getting ailments later on but hardly anyone considers the fact that we might not even get these issues if we take the time to look after ourselves and our health properly before. Stress is the biggest factor of illnesses, yet we accept it in an attempt to protect ourselves. I think it's time to reconsider fast as prevention is alway better than treatment, which at some point might not even help anymore. Live now instead of planning for a future you might not even get to at your current rate.

@@JeanVoronkova Yes, I had only watched 10 seconds of your video and the message really hit me. As you mention later on, we tend to feel invincible and a lot of the time postpone living our life because of things we feel we need to do. It takes significant experiences to open our eyes how short and precious our lives are. I lost my mum last year and it has put things into perspective. She has always survived rather than lived and I want to break free of that and try to make the most of the time I have left.

The older I get the more this is apparent to me. But I always talk myself out of it and stick to the "safe" options due to fear. I have been brought up very risk adverse and I'm always scared to take the leap. I think it helps to surround yourself with like-minded people who understand your desire and maybe already have experiences to help and advice going in this direction but most people I know are stuck in the same rut or don't even consider that another way of living is an option. I am trying to get the needed motivation and support online but it's difficult if real life always pulls you the opposite way and makes you question yourself. On the other hand the fear of wasting my life and not making the most of it becomes bigger all the time.

@@br8979 Your experience sounds familiar to me. I think many of us have had similar struggles and fears about the future. I'm a 53 year-old American, very recently retired and moved to SE Asia. A very big part of what helped me make the leap has been surrounding myself with people who think and live differently. I also still have many friends who remain in the rat race. Some of them are inspired by my decision, while others think I'm crazy. I think Jean makes some great points in this video, some of which buck conventional thinking on security and retirement. Hello Jean, I enjoyed your video, excellent content regarding retire as soon as you can. I retired this year in March 2023 at 51 years old. I'm planning to go back overseas to live months at a time in areas to retire like Hua Hin, Thailand and visit Bali Indonesia. To lower expenses and learn a new life cultures. The main phase in retirement i notice is to continue the social connections to belong and interact with new friends to be part of that new community of friends to live in retirement. Changing the mindset is important to live and enjoy life while you can physically and mentally participate, you are right the general society model of 65 plus to retire is outdated. To retire early you have to leave material things that cost a lot alone and be free from them. i feel better in the morning to do what i like to do with passion without constraint of an employer asking me to be accountable for work. Now, I'm having excitement in this life to be free. I don't want to waste no more of my precious gift of life God has given me. great video!

Hi Jean, thanks for addressing this and this is exactly how I feel right now. I retired at age of 39 , 3 years ago. Indeed I have more quality of life now and work on my health, family and relationship. I get to wake up naturally, eat better, exercise outdoor daily, calmer with inner peace. Which is also good to people around me to receive the positive energy. Meanwhile, learning new skills and diversify investment portfolios and keep up with the world market and issues. I am also fully agreed with your, that we can always go back to make money if it's needed, with the additional experience we gain from retiring early. I seriously enjoy the little things around us, observing things in a closer look and also learn to be a better person when we are calm inside us. Our mind is shaper than before when we are in this state. Hope to see more of your sharings😊 and I can understand why you picked Bali , from my recent trip there it's indeed a great spot for retirement. Keep up the good voices!!

Hi dawn. Most of my college friends assumed that with my motivation and intelligence that I would become s multi-millionaire. Three that I know have a net worth at least at 1 million. Yes, college was easy for me, socially, athletically, academically, but not financially. Out of college I first worked for a steel service center. I saw business and sn office from the inside. Glad I did not study finance or business. The basics were rather easy for me--- I had a gift. By age 26 I retired, moved to San Francisco with my future wife, and at my age we have been married for 45 years. She is a service worker and the best amatuer photographer I know--- and I have known and worked for a few highly talented and successful artist-types. I won't mention names. As a craftsman-designer, many of my customers would say that I was the best in California. Thanks. I have never worked for celebtities such as SF 49ers or musicians, or movie stars. They are surrounded by the managerial/professional class. I have worked for Silicon Valley top execs though. I worked in the home of an SF financial advisor. I asked him about investments. He told me to invest in myself. 😁 I worked for the top exec at the fruit logo company in Cupertino. He thought the company could benefit from a creative genius like me--- his words. Point here: most of my friends from college told me I was much smarter than the rest of them. Maybe wise--- but they were highly intelligent people. What is true wealth?

On point. 95% of white collar jobs involve staring at a screen for 12-14 hours per day and includes time at weekends. The fun has gone. Employers use monitoring software to ensure that your life is dictated by screen time . What a life to reflect on when on your deathbed. Second you’d be financially illiterate to retire in Singapore. Being from a highly-stressed working environment , I’ve lost ex- colleagues to death aged : 52,57,59 and 65.

When I tell people that I’m retired early in SG, they usually don’t believe me so I give up. I’m still struggling to find the right words to describe someone who is full time living and “opportunistic working”, that is working for a few months per year for new learning experiences or interests if opportunities comes along. I have the same feeling that due to no work stress and full control of our time and sleep, I tends to not falling sick.

@@br8979 I’m retired in place in SG. Went back to old company to do temporary work for a few months, just focusing on a few project based tasks. Here in SG, we depends on our CPF payouts from 65 onwards. Of course cost of living is generally higher in SG but it is also possible to find cheaper alternatives if we choose wisely e.g. go for hawker food instead of restaurant and buy house brand products from supermarket/watch out for sales.

Excellent! We retired at age 62, expensive health insurance until age 65 and Medicare. We limited our retirement withdrawals in order to qualify for Obamacare or ACA and that saved us over $25,000 per year in heath insurance premiums. In Alaska the income threshold to qualify was $89,000 for a couple.

Plan on retiring in 2 1/2 years. Doing the hard work now of getting rid of all my possessions. It’s harder than I imagined. Also exploring the potential places to retire 2. I’ve visited the Philippines twice this year to different islands. I’ve gone to Costa Rica and Belize. Next I’ll be visiting Bali and hope to see you if you’re available. Hi Jean, No objection from me. I totally agree with you on the early retirement. Early retirement does not mean that one does not work. It means that one gets to do the things of his/her own interest. It is always great to have such options and I deem it as a way of exploring one's interest as per his/her desires. No big deal if one fails in his/her retirement as long as he/she makes such decision after careful thoughts. WTK

Very nice video! I agree 100% except for "job you don't care for". If you like your job, and the knowledge and satisfaction you gained from doing your work, then as long as you have enough time to spend with your family (in my case I am 100% at home all the time doing remote work), I don't see any reason to stop working, even if it's part time in your later years. I really like my work and it give me lots of rewards, not in monetary sense. Sometimes, retirement is not what brings joy, but misery and often retirees feel they have nothing left to live for after they gave up only thing that gave them meaning in life which was their work. Many retirees, especially men, die soon after retirement I suspect because they have no longer have the driving force that their work was in their life. The key thing is - do you have enough happiness, social connections and activities outside of your work to keep you fully occupied and enjoying your life after you retire? If no, then retiring might be hazardous to your health, happiness and your satisfaction of your life.

I agree with so many of your points. My dad died at age 92. But his health started declining in his mid to late 80's and his ability to fully enjoy life ended long before age 92, because of his health problems. I think it's a mistake to try to optimize your income at age 92 when you may not be able to enjoy it.

Hi Jean, thanks for the inspiration for early retirement. I'm also 38 (now) and I am at an OK position to retire if I move to a cheap country like Bali or Vietnam. I've been saving and building at wealth since 25. However, my bf who I've been with for almost 3 years is not in the position to retire.
