This is, understandably, an American perspective. An American who wants to live abroad needs to go along way, apart from Canada and Mexico. Besides the well considered advice, here, is another option for those to whom 'abroad' is physically close. From an English perspective France is, physically, very close, but in every other way is very different. My father, on retirement, moved, gradually, from England to France by buying a cheap house in France and returning home at will. Over three or four years it became clear to him that he definitely wanted to move to France and he made the permanent move. An incremental move abroad is another possibility, besides the sound advice given here.

Im not nearly retiring nor have I actually had any sort of working life style in my life. But Ive lived in and experienced 6 ish different countries/places (usa, uk, europe, canada, hawaii) And I can tell you this from someone that never had to rat race, if u want to "retire", look for nature.. look for you and nature adventures and creation.. like beach house, remote house, country side with animals, boat, ocean, etc.. Any place where you can be yourself, create stuff, be in peace with yourself and nature, and enjoy the universe.

I would also add that you want to make sure you move to a town that is a good fit for you. I moved to a small town and there is nothing going on and very few other expats. It leaves me with limited options. I just put a deposit down on a place in another town with much more going on, and I know it will be a better fit. So don't be afraid to move and go for what you want and need.

@@ExpatsEverywhere I found a few doctoral programs that are taught in English - Doctoral in Culture Studies at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisboa, the PhD in International Studies at ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, and the PhD in Tourism at the University of Algarve. That was by just doing a quick search, but I plan to do more searching and then will figure out a timeline to apply so that I can hopefully arrive a month or so before the start of the semester. This video was just done yesterday and look at all the comments already. You guys rock!! Very sound advice. Thank you for caring about your elders, Josh :-) Personally, I can't imagine ever being bored but then again I'm active in sports, church, vegetable/fruit gardening, tending to animals, and that all takes time. It might also be fun to teach English as a second language. Really though, if all I did was to take on the challenge of learning the language, that alone could keep me busy and engaged in creating a new chapter of life! Again, thank you. Great info (as always).

Am starting to learn my 4th language now and, will spend the 5 year waiting period, planning all the best options for myself and my "retirement" in my new Country - a much better climate and, lovely people I know 😊 All the best of luck to you in your new projects and, your new Country and, let our 3rd age become the best in our lives 🤗

@@alexgray1905 Exactly Alex. I often think about my generation - us who were young in the 70'es.. Already back then we rebelled and, did our own thing and, it now turns out, many of us still do and, will continue....we are different from our parent's generation - very much so - especially us who didn't stay where we were born but, went out in the World and, we have seen a lot.. good and bad..... Our parent's generation - the children of WW2 - the majority of them, - stayed home - wherever that was and, as I see them now, they just kept on taking whatever was thrown at them and, many of them still do, which is very sad. I hope so much that my generation, by being as we are, can make a change (yet another one)...letting others and, our children's generation, know/see, that we as humans, are free spirits and, we dare taking the next step in to the unknown ..also in our 3rd age.. I took ONE thing with me when I left my country of origin...a sentence said by Hans Christian Andersen:"To travel is to live!" I agree 100% So yes, let the curtain go up ❤️

We retired 9 months ago, traveling Mexico to Argentina the next 4-5 years, doing say 6 months in many countries. We are in search of our favorite retirement city. We are currently in Nicaragua and super busy. In the gym 6 days a week, teach English an hour or two, maybe 4-5 days a week, then just errands like supermarket and paying bills. We never have a day when we aren’t busy. Oh, we retired at 55 and 60.

What would we be doing right now if we never had to work? Continue with something that piqued our interest in our youth? Therein lie the answers. I feel a big key is to never associate your sense of self with your occupation, even if it is something personal that you actually enjoy doing. Y’all are parents, children and kick @$$ video producers, but there’s way more to you than mirrors can reflect. We grow, connect and let the new environment transmute our reality. Strap in, relax, and enjoy the ride. Thanks for posting, Josh. You have wisdom beyond your years.

I have lived abroad early in my career in Tokyo Japan and Barcelona Spain for 5 years and it changed my whole outlook. Two comments. I've been an expat since 2005 and am moving towards living as a (part-time) retiree in PT. 1. Living in Katmandu, I met one of my BFFs by doing exactly what you recommended. I was having lunch at a cafe by myself and next to me was a table of English speaking folks, including a lady who's comments struck me. I reached out and told her, "I want to know you!" The rest is our history as great friends. 2. I one of your other videos (in Madera?), you mentioned that finding friends is more difficult for expats. Locals already have their own friends. So true. It is not the 'fault' of the locals. It's the reality of being an expat. Reach out. Extend. Take changes. Being an expat is okay. ^^

I finally had a chance to watch this video - so glad I did! I REALLY want to 100% retire when we make our move, but will likely try to keep a client or two, at least to start. We will be pre-retirement age so it probably makes sense to cut back to part-time hours, but not go "cold turkey." I've also heard if you rely on your to-do list to keep you busy you may be sorely disappointed when things don't happen according to your timeline, LOL. Looking into the activities popular in the area you want to move to is also helpful - what do active adults do for fun? Sports (tennis, golf, surfing, SUP), find a cooking class, dig into the history of your new home, and definitely language classes. Thanks as always for your insights and wisdom!

Great video. Amazing that so many don't think about this stuff ahead. Retiring to Ecuador in January, can't wait, game on! I expect some unsettledness for a bit while I adjust, how could it be otherwise?, but I am also keenly aware that this too, shall pass, if I work the process and decide to enjoy it instead of be crabby about it. With my intentions and goals, I am a little "afraid" that I will be busier than ever once I hit my stride! Create your life and live it!

Cool video, you bring up some great points. Always good to see a different point of view. Also I like the way you collaborate with Veronica and Nick. On a different topic, what kind of cameras do you use, you footage seems to be very crisp and the colors are great.

Thank you very much! We also love hearing different points of view. We're also a huge fan of collaborations and we hope to have more in the future. Most all of our run and gun kind of vlogs are shot with an iPhone 7 although today we upgraded to iPhone 13 Pro so let's see how that beast behaves. This video was shot with the Canon M50 with kit lens. Finally, most of the videos we shot during our 90 content creation project was shot with G's camera gear. It was a Canon but I can't remember the model right now. He shot it raw and used a color passport for color correction. I don't do all that. 😁 - Josh

All good advice. But I think being in Europe is so much more exciting than being in the US. Just the fact that I can walk to various places of daily needs is incentive enough to move there. At least there is still something public left; which is being eviscerated here.

With my $1200 retirement paycheck once I got retired several years ago I moved to Russia looking for a cheaper place to retire. Africa could be the cheapest, but not a desirable place to retire, but in Russia I found acceptable life where my income was more than enough. There were nice relationships between the US and Russia at that time so I did not expect any trouble. However three months ago my retirement payments have been stopped without explanations and Social Security has not responded anymore. I find myself trapped in a foreign country having no sustenance. On the other hand I am too old and weak to resettle again. I don't have power and money to move anywhere else. I can only go to the street begging in a foreign country. The government has defrauded me. Don't trust them. They are swindlers.

@@ExpatsEverywhere haha! If you have a horse shipper in your pocket I’m going to be genuinely impressed! My horse takes up the majority of my “hobby time.” I doubt I can afford to get her from here to there, but it sure would solve my biggest issue about retiring there (that is…the leaving of the horse).
