The noise of the DMP2000 starting up (where the head does its check) takes me back...used to have one of these in the 90s attached to a 6128

Just fired up my DMP-1 for the first time in ages, totally forgot how much of a racket it makes. Nice to see I'm not the only one still printing things out on retro printers.

Yeah, they are noisy beasts! But there’s something satisfying about printing from these machines on printers designed for them :)

great vid mate glad you sorted the problem. weird how the original worked on test but not connected!

Yeah, the first printer even worked on my Amiga! Got there in the end though :)

BTW - If you need a replacement ribbon at any point for the printer it seems impossible to find a replacement (unless you want 100 units) but I managed to get mine working by purchasing a roll of typewriter ink ribbon but I was unable to find any the required width so I cut it down to size using a hot wire (search for "foam cutter" for more info, they are easy to build). I then tried joining the ends with some very thin tape but this did work but not very well, much better to join it using a plastic bag sealing device (search for "impulse sealer") which on max setting does a very good job. I bought myself a bottle of ink pad ink which does a good job of re-inking it.

Great to know, thank you. Might do a video on it if I give it a go :)

@@satchman2000retro It was a while ago I did it so can't remember the exact details now but trimming it to size I just lined it up with something and pulled it through the wire by hand with surprisingly good results. You could probably join it with a hot knife blade or something but I already had the tool. I got so fed up battling to keep an inkjet printer functioning that I just gave in and went back to a good old reliable dot matrix :-)

I've been looking at doing something very similar. But just re-inking the original ribbon with India/china (choose whichever you want) ink. I do love your take on it too though.

Does anyone know the ink ribbon part number for this printer?

Hey, thanks for the video. Nice to see someone else doing the same as me and coming up against issues. I bought a DMP 3160 a good while back. came with everything, box, inserts, manuals.. even the original plastic bags for the manuals, ribbon cable and printer etc. Sadly mine is a beige (yellowed) one, so doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours. After hooking mine up and going to print a document, I got nothing from the amstrad(s). I tried it on an old laptop with a parallel port and it printed from there. So I have no idea what's going on with mine. I'll need to look into it at some point. I checked the dip switches etc, still nothing. No one on the CPC wiki had any pointers either sadly.

Hi, glad you enjoyed it! It was really frustrating trying to work out what was going on; turns out the printer itself was playing up. Even with a new cable it didn’t play. I didn’t check the control board closely, so there may be something going on there that I hadn’t noticed. These things become an obsession.. “ I WILL get you working!!” :) good luck in your quest :)

Had a look at the manual for the 3160; there are more dip switches than the DMP-2000, but one to check is switch 5 in bank 2 (SLCT IN Signal) - make sure that is on. One mine, if that’s off there’s zero response. Fingers crossed you get it going :)

Also, have you tried with the simple print #8, “test” to see if the CPC does anything rather than from an application?
@gee-k58543 жыл бұрын
@@satchman2000retro yeah tried that and got nothing. the computer Pauses like it's printing (as you said about what you did in your childhood haha!) but nothing happens at the printer. I'll have a look at the dip switches again. Strange how it works on a "modern" laptop but not the Amstrad.

@@gee-k5854 yeah, it’s weird. My original DMP2000 worked fine on my Amiga, which led me to believe it was the cable I was using, but even the proper cable didn’t solve it. The joys of retro hardware :) Hope you get it going bud; keep me posted :)
