Another Beauty from the past :) Look at the electronics and quality of parts, accuracy, sensitivity, digits.... amazing! Way better than most of the new ones.. Thanks for share this beauty.

I started working for HP in 1983. Back then its products - and customer support - were extraordinary. I wish I’d picked up some gear like this, but even with the (modest) employee discount it was expensive.

I had the 3478A and replaced the battery (and some caps) myself. The way I did it was while powered on and with a portable (cordless) soldering iron to prevent shorting out the battery contacts in which case the calibration would've been lost still.

Great point..I recall seeing that mentioned as the soldering iron ground could short the battery. I'll probably do the same..cordless iron while powered on by mains. 👍

Yes, you have to use an un-grounded iron and the device have to be powered on, to replace the battery on a 3478A. And of course, replace the (3) Rifa-mains-filter caps..

"portable" Can't wait to slap on some speakers and a cassette deck on that thing! The glowing screen ones are far easier to read at night, unless that has a backlight. I'm curious about the battery that would have went in there. Calibration still bang on, one of the advantages of digital calibration...but when it does whack off it is hard to work out!

In the good, old days you paied with an arm and a leg for this DMM... - or traded even your grandmother for this thing. But it seems, this devices were worth it. Obviously: Accurate till today, 40 years later! And still no cheapies, even as used items. But I still want one...

Self test doesn’t let you know if the battery is getting low? Seems like an oversight. I generally wait to get my wheel alignment until I am buying new tires. Maybe the same plan is warranted for replacing the cell and calibration adjustment?

Great point 👉 Would make alot of sense for sure, I didn't see anything mentioned in the manual regarding a low battery fault indicator on bootup. I'll take another look see just to make sure.👍
