Welcome to the first of a new semi-regular series we’ve called Retro Tests.
We’re going to sample trucks from the great era that spanned the early 70s, through until the early 90s, roughly…there are no hard and fast rules. To some degree we aim to investigate just how far we’ve come (if we’ve come that far at all), but the main thrust is to have a bit of fun, go on a nostalgic trip, enjoy a few laughs, and rekindle some fantastic yarns and memories from a great period in our transport history that’s now gone.
The main delivery media for the Retro Tests will be video, with print as the support - in other words, opposite from the magazine’s main test. We hope you enjoy watching and reading them as much as we do putting them together.

Best erfs ever built they took the market by storm when it was launched in uk most haulage companies had at least 1 of them the 320 big cam could boogie especially before speed limiters in uk were launched . Nice to see one and hear that jake working .

Best sounding Cummins ever! I agree with the comfort part. In their day it was the most comfortable ride one could buy in any truck. Thanks for the video. I truly enjoyed it! Cheers from South Africa.

How cool, loved the video! Back when I was a kid my dad had several erf lv (?) tractors and run fruit and veg to and from London. I used to sleep on the engine cover under a duvet but then they were mostly gardeners! He once drove 32ton loaded from Covent garden to sandy in the early hours of the morning with no clutch! Sadly never driven a truck myself as I am diabetic..... so keep those classics coming!

You’re the mirror image of me mate, I grew up going with my dad all the time in ERF, Fodens, old Volvo and Scanias, whatever he was driving lol. My whole family (men) were wagon drivers, my brother is now too, guess what? I’m not because I’m type1 diabetic 😂 I know we can do the licence now but I drive long distance anyway but in a van up and down the country, And sometimes do bigger distances than my brother. I love these “proper” wagons. These days they all look the same and sound like hairdryers. Even the Scanias with the v8 sound cr4p now. Take care 👍🏼👍🏼

Come to the states as long as it can be managed without shots or you've had the insulin for 6 months you can drive here! My advice would be take plenty of healthy snacks and food and "graze" as need be! Also staying in shape will make it easier on your bodies!!!

Good old resin rockets I owned a fair few from B series to the ECX which I have to say cured my ERF habit. I loved these motors always got me home and was never left stranded with them traveling all through europe and Scandinavian. I have to say its better than the peterbilt 389 dinosaur I've got now 100 years out of date and almost brand new.

In the early 90s I was driving Volvo F6 and FL6 16 ton rigids. This was when the E Series was really flying. I really evied these guys who had Cummins 290 & 325s and 14 litre 320s with the magnificent Eaton Twin Splitter box. Proper trucks driven by proper truckers.

The Volvo f6 was also a gem dad was driving one when I was born. Best wagon he ever drove untill he got to a 2009 reg Scania there was 5 Riggs between the Volvo and that Scania

@@ebddenby8439 never let me down once. The FL6 was powerful and comfortable but couldn't match the visibility of the F6. Moved onto a 1987 Reg Scania 92 with a 10 speed Splitter and a much stronger engine and then a 1995 feg Scania 93 with the 8 speed Range Change box. Both Scanias were 26 tonners. All Swedish and designed to work hard day in day out with minimal problems.

@@seancooke4127 I wonder how many people are aware the 93m still didn't have seatbelts as standard my dad got one of the first 4 series in 97 followed by 3 manual p series and a opticruise p series in 2007/8 and 9 long gone are the days where you have your own truck now you drive what your told.

@@ebddenby8439 true, but the driver who drove his own truck cost a lot less than the bung in an automatic so that multiple drivers don't wreck the gearbox or the clutch, sales line was invented. I fear that if drivers could not be trusted to drive different vehicles without breaking them, then they're probably not great drivers really. I have driven my own truck, which is great. However, I have have also had drive what I was told. In that case it was my job to familiarise myself with whatever truck I was allocated and drive it properly.

@@seancooke4127 yeah that's the thing dad could originally have a shovel, jacket and wellys behind the passanger seat for any situation which may arise. From about 2007 onwards s.j bargh was no longer a little firm out of Caton nr Lancaster it got so big it got to the point they gave him a 54 reg 4 series and said that's yours now so he put all his belongings in it just like he had done since 1984. He could go in any morning and his wagon would be in longridge or Endon or kendal this was a example of the 54 reg and when he got it back if he got it back there would be alsorts of damage. And the belongings were gone. He has relied on company tools since.

I wonder why it has a 9 speed, in the UK it would have had a twin splitter with a very few fitted with a 13 speed, the only E series with a 9 speed was the supermarket trolley with the L10-250. On the other hand you get a Jake, it wasn't even on the option list here although one or two did have them but I think serious grovelling to Sandbach must have been involved.
