There's no shortage of both games and game recommendations out there, leading to pressure to like certain games. I go over some of the various ways we feel pressure to own games, add them to our collection, play them and enjoy them!

Not sure exactly how to compare, but my mother taught me that if you don't enjoy a book by page 100, stop reading it. Something comparable could be said for video games... at some point, if you're not enjoying it, move on to another game! There are thousands to choose from. 👍🎮

The biggest problem I experience with this topic is that people get so upset if you say a game is good, but you don't like it. There's a lot of games that I'm not into, but I would never call them bad games. I feel like there's a distinction there that people should really understand.

I felt "pressure" from myself to buy Rocket Knight Adventures a few years ago, and I'm so glad I did. I never got a chance to play it as a kid. Amazing how many things we missed as kids without the internet as we know it today. But it made me appreciate the good games I had, rather than pining for the *next* good game.

Happens to me with some rpg's that I haven´t played yet. I stopped forcing myself trying to "muscle" through them and instead, whenever I have time to play a game, I go with something "I really like to play" at that moment. Time is too precious and I understand first hand that sentiment of not liking something that is otherwise liked by anybody else. It's not the game's fault, it is just not (or past) "your time" to really feel it (or force yourself to feel it, which is worse).

Glad you featured Earthbound in this, for me that's the game everyone says is must-play and I just can't get past "meh". Everyone croons about how whacky it is and idk I think I've had my fill already of over the top whackyness. I probably would have loved it if I knew about it in 90s. I mean, I did, I had that ad from Nintendo Power that made it seem like a gross out game haha. Oh well, that's fine because I think people should play the _actual_ best game of all time which is Super Mario Bros RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. I'm not saying there aren't other good games out there, I'm just saying that's the _real_ best one!

Same. I know lots of people love the game but it has never appealed to me even a little. Particularly in the graphics department. We returned the Game Cube because I hated Mario Sunshine so much. This was when Nintendo and Sony had some kind of promotion where if you bought their system and didn't like it, you could return it for a full refund. Nice video! I totally agree with your opinion on that, and it took me some time to get there I have to admit. I've started playing retro games to expand my knowledge as a game designer, so I've made lists of "must have" games for each console. My goal was to play them all to get all the nice things about them and reuse them in my own games. And I felt this kind of pressure to like these "must have". But in the end even from the point of view of playing retro games to get inspiration for creating new games (not only for fun), it's still a good idea to focus on games you like, it will make your new games even more personal and unique. The same way your collection is more personal and unique if there are only the games you really love in there. Thanks for your work and your way of making me think a lot at each video!

Dude, awesome video. This FOMO feeling you're describing here has been the bane of my gaming existence for the last several years. I find myself spending much more time researching games, watching reviews and buying instead of actually playing. And when I DO play, it's something that's highly regarded but I don't even like, which leads me to feeling guilty and losing the will to game. Lately I've been trying to approach the issue differently: I'll try a game, and if I don't feel a connections, I just return it to the shelf and pick up something else. I can always return to it if I want to, it's not going anywhere. After a few games like that I'll find something I like that actually is fun and makes me glad I tried it out. It's a process. Funny you mentioned Rayman as something from your backlog: It's my favorite game of all time, but most of people's criticisms of it are valid (difficulty, lives system, checkpoints). It's special to ME, and that's what counts. Same with you and Rocket Knight Adventures, which I find to be pretty but uninteresting (don't kill me). Thanks for this video, it's good to know I'm not the only one with this issue weighing down on me.

I was playing Chrono Trigger for the first time, not sure how far in I was but many hours and several time travels later and I just wasn't able to play for a few days and kind of lost track of what I was doing. I do think it was a fun game and I'm sure I'll get back to it and maybe next time I'll get all the way through.

Interesting because I've never felt pressure to "like" a game, today or in the past. Perhaps it's because while I love gaming, I am pretty casual about it as well, as are my friends. Perhaps it is also the fact that I don't bother creating some identity or lifestyle for myself around gaming, and I don't feel like I'm part of a "community" in that sense. I find that people who do that are much more hardcore about it all.

I feel I did this more in the 90s when I would buy a game judging it by it's cover. In the first 5 minutes I would know I do not like this game. I'd give it a shot again & again because I bought it with my hard earned money. Now I don't even bother to do that or open & games I got as a gift as well. Now I can just watch someone play it first & if I know I don't like it then I bring it to our Gamers Paradise Retro Store for credit. With you to the tube all my games are home run hits or at least a 1st base hit & that's good enough to stay on my lawn!

Yearly I go through a DooM and Quake phase; I felt a lot of pressure to play out of sync with myself with the recent re-release due to the massive amount of new players on board for classic deathmatch. Something that I knew would not last as everyday gamers and first-timers would fade away leaving only the hardcore “pressures on” Quakers. The skill ceiling is so high in it’s multiplayer, and I do love it, but the common experience if you aren’t wholly dedicated can be demoralizing. Getting that chance to play with all skill levels again felt like something I had to do, but I was right in the middle of a different annual revisit in the form of The Legacy of Kain series and honestly, if I wasn’t playing Quake, I’d start to feel heavy fears of missing out on this arguably limited period.. I was really trying to get in the mood for Lovecraft and nailguns.. But my mind was stuck in Nosgoth. Which lastly I’ll add, speaking of vampires.. Castlevania; Symphony of the Night. My definition of a midlog title along with the pressures of enjoying a game. I do like it, but it never sticks and I inevitably start playing/reading/watching something it will remind me of, while gradually I drift away into other themes and interests until at some point it comes back around and I again feel the pressure to give it my time and attention.. ..What is a gamer? A miserable little pile of midlogs!

I have a classics category pinned to my home screen on my Xbox one. I have games that span the history going back to things like Midway Arcade Treasures that have games as early as 1979 or early 80s. Also Dig Dug, the Double Dragon Trilogy, Shenmue 1 and 2. So I can't say that I feel pressure more but I am constantly reminiscent of my mother as kid always being like "if you get that game you're only going to play it once and then not again." So I have that residual sense of guilted responsibility to play all my games....which is impossible at times.

I used to say I long the Zelda series but now there’s more games in the series that are bad or just repeats than there are good ones. Link to the past is my favorite game ever but honestly the series kinda goes downhill mid 2000s for me and breath of the wild isn’t a Zelda game to me what so ever. I can also understand people not loving the series for even its good games as they’ve been overhyped by the diehards.

Excellent points here, as per usual. To one of your points, my second favorite genre is good old 2D Action Platforming. Sonic for me is something different. I enjoy the 2D Sonic games, but there is no precision platforming on offer. The object is speed. To your main point, I don't feel pressure to play games retro or otherwise. I know what I enjoy most and usually those games are arcade derivatives and in the modern day decidedly non "Triple A". Super Smash Bros. however, is a series many people around me rave about. I'm okay with the fact that the series does little for me.

That reminds me... I gave Earthbound two shots in the past, couldn't bear to play it. Also dropped Zelda OoT after an hour or so when I was younger. I also do not care for Hollow Knight like others do. In any case, as I generally say, I would rather try out a game that's interesting over a game that's good. I've played good games that I had little interest in replaying, and interesting games that always stays with me in my mind palace.

You could do the flipside to this. Games you like that others don't. Not very retro but I like golden axe beast rider. Yes it doesn't play like the original but it is obviously part of the same series and ticks enough of my nostalgia boxes to get me reminiscent of the good ol' days while giving me a new challenge. And it's pretty short in comparison to some of the other 200 hour titles that came out around the same time.
