We've got ourselves a battle of what many refer to as the "6th generation" game consoles. Sega's Dreamcast, Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox duke it out.

Born in 1990, and I feel like I was so blessed to be able to witness the evolution from the Genesis/SNES time-frame until now. I asked my mom for an Activision toy from her Avon book at the age of 11 or 12 and so I had a lot of fun with Atari games on that toy as well. I spent a lot of time on Spider Fighter in particular. It was just about the love of the game.

I was born in '87 and had an older brother who was really into games so I grew up with the NES and almost everything after. The NES was good but SNES and Genesis really took it to the next level (especially with RPGs like FF6). Then the 4th gen really excited me with the potential of 3D graphics and it was an absolute blast playing the N64 with four friends. But then the Sega Dreamcast came out and blew me away with very good 3D graphics and real time online play (Phantasy Star Online). The PS2, GameCube, and Xbox were also all very good and unique with their own great exclusives, but after that, the Xbox 360 was kind of the culmination and refinement of game consoles for me. I switched to PC gaming after the 7th gen as almost every game would get a PC port and the consoles were basically just low end gaming PC's. I didn't buy a new console since the 360/PS3 until the Switch came which is great and feels like another classic console. So IMO 6th gen > 5th gen > 4th gen > 7th gen > 3rd gen > 8th gen > 9th gen.

Same. Born 1980. I only emulate Gen 3-6 on my Android smartphone. My favorite genre is really the 2D platformers. It's easy to play them in short bursts while waiting in line. I'll play Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! for 3 minutes or if I'm stuck waiting for an order. And it's playable with just touchscreen. Super NES and Genesis have tons of awesome 2D platformers. Just yesterday, I discovered Disney's Hercules on PS1. I always knew it existed but ignored it even though I enjoyed the 1997 movie. Man, the graphics are still incredible after 25 years. The only emulator apps I need on my phone... Lemuriod (NES, Gen, SNES, PS1, N64, PSP) Mame4droid (90s arcade classics) Yaba Sanshiro 2 (Saturn) Redream (Dreamcast) AetherSX2 (PS2) Dolphin MMJR2 (GameCube, Wii) Then have a PS Vita and Switch lying around. I've been contemplating getting a Steam Deck. I'm reluctant because I'm not into modern games. My Flip 3, Vita slim, and Switch Lite covers 95% of my gaming needs and covers 100% of what I want from the 3rd through 6th gens.

Then from the Xbox 360 onward they went with dual shoulder buttons like PS2. Even Nintendo has gone this route with their Switch Pro controller.

The PS2 is my favorite console of all time and the last generation I was heavily invested into video games instead just a few franchises like gens that came after. I think the Cube is popular now because it is one console that held up perfectly today. Mostly because the art style and many people missed out on it today. My dad had the Xbox, but I only played it for KOTOR which led into my deep diving into western RPGs which blew up the following generation and eventually PC gaming. Like Off the grid Gaming stated, this generation is the apex of gaming.

Yup.... DC are great for arcade style games. But not good for more in dept game genres, as there are almost none on that platform. That is what I experienced back when I had a DC. Like yes, there are tons of big games genres such GTA and GT on Ps2, but the DC perfected genres such as Crazy Taxi and Ikaruga. I tried Ikaruga on Xbox360 and Ps3 and I admit that it sucked due to the controllers feel in my hands.

00:53 I think that the 6th generation was the last generation that the games were truly collectible (not sure how to phrase that). From the 7th gen onwards, DLC and downloadable patches made it that the disc version was hardly ever the complete version of the game. I do still collect for that generation and later generations too, however I never feel 100% satisfied with a physical version, knowing that if the servers go down I will probably be playing an inferior version of the game. This became ever worse when day one patches started to become common place.

Honestly there is still plenty of 7th gen games that are collectable and will have most or the full game And I could argue early with gen games too... buuuut yea it became alot harder to get the "whole game" unless it relreleade in a single disk as an exclusive 2with all the dlc (like what I just did by buying hollow knight aa a physical medium) Honestly anything before 8th gen seem very collectable and will have most or all the full experience after that, it has become so much harder :/

At the time it felt like everyone around me were jumping on board with the Xbox. I stuck it out with Nintendo and absolutely fell in love with the GameCube. The sheer amount of cross-platform titles this little box got was amazing. Combine that with every major Nintendo franchise getting a brand new entry and it was a no contest. Yet it still felt like everyone was on a level playing field regardless of the console. Almost as if world peace had been declared amongst gamers. This really is such a special group of consoles. I believe in one of your older videos you likened the 32 bit era as the rough 3d era with these consoles perfecting those games similar to how the 8 bit era did a lot of good things in 2d but how 16 bit made such a big leap forward. But for these consoles to really nail 3d and to also include some online connection, to still have many exclusives for each console, to have established controllers that worked for their genres (even if some find the Dreamcast and GameCube controllers a little weird), it just really feels like the perfect blend and the last era of an actual console war. It's a real shame Sega blew it so bad in the US with the Saturn that the Dreamcast never really had a chance but looking at everything that came afterward and it feels like Nintendo just does their own thing (and probably always did) but they almost try to not directly compete with the newer Xbox and Sony consoles with their newest console coming out years earlier and for Microsoft and Sony, outside of a few exclusives it just feels like whatever game you want you can get on either platform. So it doesn't feel like we'll get another generation like this with so many consoles that also provide unique features. But still a very fun and interesting video Bird.

Whatever generation was around when you were a kid/teenager, that’s your favorite. It’s pretty predictable. I buck that trend and say that the present is always the best generation. Never have we had so many options for different types of games than we do now. The fact that I can go from playing a CCG on my iPad, to putting around Nintendo games on the Switch, to playing the most visually impressive games I’ve ever seen on the Series X/PS5, with countless indie/digital titles to choose from. 6th gen was good. Great even. But it lacked heavily in 2D output and the “indie” output was replaced by companies like Acclaim and Midway. People forget all that B tier shit that came out in the 6th generation.
@ThatGuy-vo9os
@ThatGuy-vo9os Жыл бұрын
@@leeartlee915 I’ll admit that the relative lack of 2D content in this generation is a negative factor. It also had its fair share of junk. That said, there are some notable options for 2D games, especially if you’re willing to count compilations. Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga, Sonic Mega Collection, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, and Super Smash Bros Melee are a couple off the top of my head. I also enjoy my share of modern games as well. I have a PS5 and an Xbox Series X and I’ve been enjoying both of them thoroughly. The indie scene is quite solid as well. However, the current generation also comes with its problems, particularly when it comes to some of the larger companies. EA and Activision in particular are prime examples, especially with loot boxes and micro transactions, buggy and rushed launches, and a general lack of interest in trying something new and unique. Certainly not every game will have these problems, but they are prevalent.
@leeartlee915

@@leeartlee915 "Whatever generation was around when you were a kid/teenager, that’s your favorite. It’s pretty predictable." For some people, I guess that's the case. But Gen 5 will always be my favorite gen, and I was in my late 20's at the time. It was when fun-positive met interesting-3D-gameplay (or perfected-2D-gameplay) met mind-opening visuals/music, and both Japanese and western devs were still at their most inventive. In Gen 6, fun-positive started to take a back seat (especially 2004-2007 when dudebro violent action games got more and more popular), and the inventiveness of earlier generations gave way to sequel-itis. Like you I think the current generation is really fun ... because of all the options we have. I still play new games 50% of the time, and there are some really good ones! But there's no way the Top 20 games of 2022 match the Top 20 games of 1996, or even of 1990 or 2003 for that matter. The volume of good games is higher, but the high points of fun don't match 1987-2003.

I was more than thrilled with the amount of amazing games that released on it (yes, even Billy Hatcher). I eventually got a PS2 years later and loved that as well due to the sheer amount of variety in its game library. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. The Dreamcast still has quite a few hidden gems even during its short lifespan. I still enjoy many games from each of these systems. Quite a number of them still hold up in this day and age. Personally, I love the PlayStation 2 for kickstarting video games in becoming the forefront of entertainment when the year 2000 hit. It was magical to see FULL 3D games come to life without boundaries. As a child, I said to myself: we came a long way from 2D games. However, after 20 something years later, I own all of six gen consoles (except Gamecube) and collected a large volume of games. Of all the gaming experiences I have endured collecting/playing during pre and post covid, I enjoy XBOX more. Its sad that though XBOX being new to the party and was a gargantuan leap in console hardware for the time, this was Microsoft's only time they primarily focus in creating the necessary gaming software to push its hardware to its limits which is practically a COMPUTER with Pentium III and Nvidia Graphics in 60fps. I truly love this era dearly since it was indeed the last time we see developers of all over the world on the race of having the best presentation of their games. A great time to be alive! :)

My friend made her son a GameCube costume for Halloween this year. It's awesome. For me, the OGbox was the first I purchased and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was the game that brought me back as at that time I almost quit gaming and almost made the dreaded decision to sell all my collection. I'm glad I didn't because it was at this time that I realized I had a game collection due to having never sold anything all the way back to NES. Today, between the 3 consoles I have around 210 games. The GameBoy player is a must have for any collector as I don't own a GameBoy but I have a small collection of those handheld games to play on the GameCube. My brother gave me his PS2 when he upgraded to PS3 and I think this was the last best generation of gaming. Right before wealth extraction ruined it. Having gamed through every generation of console, I can say, with a high degree of certainty, that the best generation of gaming was the 16-bit era.* TG-16 (16bit GFX), Sega Genesis, Neo•Geo, and SNES. We got higher color palettes, stereo sound, true parallax scrolling, clearer PCM samples, larger on screen sprites (bigger bosses), Mode 7, and it all generally stayed within the 2D game style, so they tend to still hold up well today. In fact, some of them still have yet to be topped, when it comes to hand drawn 2D pixel art.. I honestly doubt we'll ever see a game have the same amount of amazing animation detail as Metal Slug 3 (Nazca / Neo•Geo). * I was half joking about this being the best. I believe it, but it's of course my opinion. Yours may vary, and that's cool too. -Matt

I had all of the 6th gen consoles, but now I only collect the Dreamcast and Xbox. I would go with a PS2 with Free McBoot for all those games. It’s just too overwhelming to collect for. And GameCube just doesn’t do it for me and the games are outrageously expensive. I already have a Saturn collection, thank you.

I was 17 when dreamcast came out and the first system I bought myself with my first wage, and absolutely hammered it . When it died and at the time I was working at Game in Bolton Manchester, I literally got 20 games for £20 because we discounted them to £1.50p each of course we got discount on them . Those was the day's, maybe dreamcast was favourite because of nostalgia. I eventually bought the other three systems and gamecube was very underrated, the loading was really quick and the 1st party games was awesome. Ps2 had some hard hitters but always suffered with multi platform ports where as xbox was definitely the multi platform winner easily. They all have merits in the own way but I do think personally if people was lucky enough to own the others at the same time, the multi platform ports really really was poor in comparison on ps2 .either way any of these systems all had alot of amazing games .

Can't say that I have a favorite here, because I love them all. I was surprised though, that you didn't mention KOTOR for the Xbox. In general the 6th generation was a great time for STAR WARS fans. It is interesting to watch back how long especially the PS2 had official released games. Fifa 2014 is one example. And although people have issues with online gaming, the PS2 had online game support which the latest least until 2016. 6th generation definitely a great era for gamers, with a great library of games which IMHO aged very well.

It's funny that the PS2 and GC are the two highest polling of your survey, because those were the consoles I had back then. It's really hard for me to say which is my favorite, I've only in the past year owned a Dreamcast and even more recently discovered some of the original Xbox's deeper cuts so there is a newness factor to that. I understand what you're saying about PS2 technically being the best but it also has the least identity, so the GameCube is a nostalgic favorite. It's a cop out answer, but I'm going to say all 4 are essential, and in a way compliment each other.

This one is a bit of a mixed bag, for me. I was a HUGE Sega fanboy, and wanted a Dreamcast really bad. I wouldn't get one until years later when I built one out of parts. I used to do repairs and mods in middle and high school, and finally built a functional Dreamcast from all of the parts I had collected when I was 16. I didn't think much about the DC when my mom got my brothers and I an Xbox one Christmas. Xbox will always remain my favorite from that generation, simply because of JSRF, Sega GT, and Morrowind. I don't thumb my nose at the Gamecube, or PS2, either. I was a HUGE fan of Pikmin, Windwaker, and Smash Bros. I also loved a bunch of games on PS2 like Smuggler's Run, and GTA III. I had the great fortune of having a diverse group of friends my whole life. So, while I had a Genesis, some of my other friends had SNES. I had a PS1, and I had friends with an N64 or Saturn. And, in this generation, we had all of them between the friend group. We didn't argue over which was better, we just played everything we could, and it was amazing.

I'm on the younger end, having been born in 1999 and my childhood was during the 2000s and 2010s. The first generation I really grew up with myself was the 7th Gen (Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii), but I sorta grew up second-handedly with the sixth gen consoles because they were around whenever I went to day care or summer camp as a kid. Most day cares/summer camp programs had at least all three of the PS2, GameCube and Xbox in a "game room" and whenever I was allowed I would always gravitate to playing at least one of them every day. The games on all three were so fun and I never got bored of any of the three, I can see why it's known as a golden era of gaming, even if I didn't properly grow up with this console set, I've experienced the game library thanks to many camps and day cares still having them around even during my elementary school days in the late 2000s. And the overall library between the four sixth gen consoles was so good that it basically hooked me into games for life. Granted looking at it older console gens seem really short compared to the ones I grew up with (the newer ones). Back in my childhood the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii were the new stuff on the market and stayed around for a long time, with the previous consoles staying mildly relevant alongside them, and the Wii U/PS4/Xbox One was the first "new generation debut/transition" I truly experienced, and that was towards the end of my middle school days and the beginning of my high school ones haha, and that lasted a good while before the current Switch/PS5/Xbox Series X era.

The amount of games of this generation to hold genre toppers is staggering. All these years later and they still can't be topped. I would say the Ps2 and gamecube hold similar levels of attachment for the general public because of two reasons. One is that the gamecube had a relatively large boom in popularity post-covid. Something I'm sure the other consoles will have in due time. It happened with the genesis after snes had its resurgence in popularity. The second reason is that although the Ps2 sold so well units wise the attach rate for all those games are VERY low to the point that if you get a room full of Ps2 fans and ask them their favorite games you are very likely to hear wildly different answers from those people. The gamecube library has been almost completely picked through by comparison and people know what is good and what is bad. Nintendo's tendency to leave the gamecube unloved is also a big contender for its staying power as opposed to the numerous ports and sequels Ps2 games got. I love the dreamcast but I feel that it's too niche of a console to get that love and the xbox doesn't try to stand out it tries to be the best option period. That leads to less discussion in general because what it succeeded in something the public deems uninteresting. The 360 only stood out because the Ps3 was such a middling console itself that the 360 being better was actually a point of interest. I just can go on and on about this topic so I'm gonna stop. Otherwise I'm gonna write a book in the KZfaq comments section.

Maybe a bit of skillful sanding or polishing might fix it?

Dreamcast is one of my top 3 favorite consoles ever (next to Saturn & PS1). I don't really think of it as Gen 6, since its mainline releases ended with Rez in Nov 2001. It's sort of its own beast, existing in-between generations like the Switch. I know others disagree ... but for me Gen 6 is PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. On the flipside of that, many in the Dreamcast community would argue that the console is STILL ALIVE, because of all the interesting homebrew and multiplat ports that enthusiast developers still release there. Hard to make perfect definitions in the world of retro videogames, that's for sure. The fact that Gamecube ranks so close to PS2 in your polls says a lot about the fun-loving, positive retro-community attracted to your channel. A lot of Nintendo fans! For me it's pretty clear that PS2 is the leader from a diverse game library perspective, with Gamecube and Xbox tied for a strong second, each sporting many awesome and unique games. As someone who started gaming with a Gen 1 Odyssey 4000 console as a kid in the 70s, I still think of Gen 5 as best gen for me, with Gen 4 and Gen 6 battling it out for second place. For me, Gen 6 was amazing at the beginning (2000-2003), but then sort of petered-out in 2004-2007, too locked in sequel-itis, and also too chasing popularity trends as the industry lurched toward brown-and-grey action-heavy Gen 7 (the weakest gen ever imo).

The Dreamcast is probably the greatest video game console ever made (well, maybe the PS1 beats it out), and I say that not because it's my favourite (that would be the Nintendo DS), but because of it's concept and pure expression. In a funny way, you can really feel SEGA floundering to try and make something crazy, innovative, and revolutionary. The pure enthusiasm and creativity of it's varied library, with small experimental concepts getting big funding (D2, L.O.L., Rez, Seaman, Shenmue II, Jet Set Radio, and more), I can't think of another console out there that screams video games as loud as the Dreamcast does. Beyond that, despite it's obvious shortcomings (2nd analogue stick??), it pushed a lot of concepts that are now standard, mainly being one of the only consoles that gen to have a well developed online network that was well integrated into many of the major releases (the PS2 for instance didn't do this at all).Comparatively, although people rave about the rightly excellent library of the Gamecube, nothing about it's library really feels as if it's trying something new. While it is host to many odd-ball games in longstanding franchises, the amount of 3rd party, or new IP experimental games is incredibly lacking. The PS2 of course has a wonderful varied library that anyone can get something out of, but I wouldn't place it at number 1 simply because it feels safe, hegemonic, and unexciting. That's at least for me why the Dreamcast stands above all others this gen. Of course, most games were simply ported elsewhere, but as a fully realised package and experience, the Dreamcast is king.

PS3 14. Xbox 15. N64 16. Wii 17. Game Boy 18. Game Gear 19. Jaguar (moved up from last place) 20. DS 21. GBA Since getting into emulation, I began to love underrated systems like the Saturn and GameCube. The Saturn is hard to emulate but the games I've played for it are quite fantastic. Saturn's 2D capabilities aged the best from the 5th gen since early 3D looked ugly once 6th gen consoles were released. TBH, I really only need my Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 + 8BitDo SN30 Pro controller and I cover NES to GameCube eras. I can also do DS and Wii but don't really care for either one. I prefer all my gaming devices to be PORTABLE. No cables to connect to the back of a TV. Can charge it and be ready to go. I don't own a TV any more, so 100% of my gaming needs to come from a handheld or mobile device. I thought about getting a Steam Deck but I may just wait when the price goes down and they make something smaller. And I'm not really urging to play modern games. If for the rest of my life I could only play games from the 3rd to 6th gens, I'll be totally satisfied. I just started playing Disney's Hercules on PS1 and it's awesome!! You can still find fun games to play from NES to GameCube. NES, Genesis, SNES, and Saturn are rich with awesome 2D platformers to kill 5 minutes. The only systems I previously owned that I haven't emulated are Xbox, PS3, and PS4. Can also say Switch but I barely got my Switch about a month ago. I don't need to emulate that at this point. I don't bother with DS because I hate being forced to look at that 2nd screen. And GBA were just rehashes for SNES games. If you're into emulation on your Android smartphone, Dreamcast is the best to play with touchscreen controls. NBA 2K2, NFL 2K2, RPGs, and puzzle games are playable without tactile buttons. Dreamcast, PSP, and DS are very easy to emulate these days. You'll have hiccups with PS2, GameCube , and 3DS if your hardware is weak. I brought out my PSP slim the other day after not seeing it for 3 years and didn't realize how small it is compared to my Vita slim. The PSP slim was given to me by my brother. I owned the PSP phat for 11 years until I moved out of the Philippines after 5 years living there and never got my stuff back since it was unexpected. I got my PSP slim hacked and I only use it to play NES, SNES , and Genesis games. It's like a Vita mini for me. I remember the PSP phat being so bulky in 2005. The Vita slim makes a PSP slim look compact by comparison. Get a powerful Android smartphone, a Vita with PS1 classics, PS2 ports, and Switch which has Wii U and PS3/360 ports. You should be able to cover 1st through 7th gens pretty well. The need for Steam Deck is no longer necessary unless you want to play games like FF7 Remake so badly. I like to carry as little as possible with smaller devices. My Flip 3, Vita slim, and Switch Lite covers 95% of my gaming needs. The 5% leftover is for PS4 games like FF7 Remake , Shenmue III (I'm aware it's mediocre), God of War (2018), and Uncharted 4/MGS5 (which I already own both on PS4). But I find modern gaming boring af. All style, no fun in playing them. They become an interactive movie chore.

You were the one living under a rock. There's no way you knew a LOT of people who only had a Dreamcast or Saturn. I'm willing to bet $5 that nearly every person you knew with those systems at the time also had a Playstation or Nintendo of the same generation.

I had to click on this video as I just bought a GameCube for 25 bucks with two controllers and a Dreamcast with controllers for 65. Don't tell me there aren't deals to be had in the retro gaming market anymore....
