I try to fix a Sony MDP-650D LaserDisc laserdisk/ laser disk / disc player, bought on eBay for Spares or Repair.

That was a roller coaster of emotions. Strangely enough, I'm most impressed with your trademark epoxy-as-screw-boss repair. Quite "simple", but it never occurred to me to try it before I saw you doing it on a previous video.

Thank you K.P. it never occurred toe that was a trademark LOL. I'm not sure it had occurred to me either until the Amstrad either! It seemed to work better with the Amstrad but it could be either the epoxy or the plastics were different. Which reminds me I need to get some more putty. Wow watching repeats is a compliment. I saw another one of these go up on ebay and was a bit disappointed I missed out as I'd like to have a go at one using the lessons learned from this. It's hard enough debugging electronics, if I had to film it too it would be a lot harder. 😆 I wonder how many KZfaqrs do a "take 2" with slightly fake surprise and delight at that moment (probably a lot).Also it's nice you always take time to reply to messages of support. Great repair tutorial. I would usually think a dead Sony player would usually be a bad pick-up or a stretched loading belt but I guess you proved me wrong. Also, just clarify a minor thing; this player will only pass PCM or DTS through the optical digital output. If one does want to output AC3, a mod will need to made to this player to add an additional circuit board and an RCA jack.

Thanks David sounds like you know a lot about these players. I'll be honest I thought it would be the loading belt too when I first read the eBay listing. A quick low cost repair I thought! How wrong was I. Good info on the optical out too. Thanks. As you can probably tell I'm not an expert in these repairs, just trying my hand at fixing stuff. I learn a lot from all the great comments, so I really appreciate you leaving such detailed feedback like this. Thanks so much.

@@RetroTechRepair At this point, we're all learning the hard way to be repair techs out of necessity w/ the lack of repair shops these days. Especially with LD players, we're never going to see a renaissance like the turntable so every player that can be fixed should be fixed so we can still play this old software. Luckily for me, most of the issue I run into are either loading belts, cracked gears, or dried up grease locking up the mechanism so they are not as difficult to fix. However, I have acquired some DOA players that I can practice on seeing if I can fix and your repair tutorial gave me some ideas. We'll see how it goes. And in regards to AC3, I do specialize on doing these mods. Probably the coolest thing in the world to upgrade a pre-1994 player with a new sound capability.

Hi Tadeu that's great. So glad you found the video useful. I learned a lot myself if I do another I'll be VERY careful with the plastics. You might get lucky, mine wasn't packed very well for shipping so some of the damage could have occurred on its journey to me. Anyway thanks so much for your comments and good luck with the repair.

Thank you for this video! I have the US version MDP-455 I purchased new in the early 90's. It hasn't worked for years. It won't read discs. I've opened it up but don't have the skills to repair. I suspect the problem is in the laser mechanism. I have a bunch of opera discs that I can't find on more modern media or they are very expensive. I think I may look for a working player instead of trying to repair after watching your video!

Well, that was an epic fix! When I saw how complex it was inside and all the plastic falling to bits I was a tad pessimistic to say the least, hats off to you mate 👏 I remember games in the arcade such as Dragon's Lair had one of these in (usually Pioneer I believe) and they are very temperamental. Fantastic watch, one of my favourite uploads from yourself. Real shame both for you and us viewers that "that" moment wasn't captured but I can imagine it was euphoric 😁

I have seen industrial players for sale, but I played these games only later via Daphne emulator. Glad you liked the video it's my favourite to date though sadly not my most successful perhaps it's slow burn. It was quite exciting when I got it going. Thanks as ever for your continued support. Patience rewarded ... such a shame Sony cheaped out on the structural elements. Epoxy putty and FORMcard can be useful for reinforcing dodgy plastic joints. Keep an eye out for another one ... your experiences might pay dividends in the future.

Plastic easily gets brittle when it gets old and has been thermal cycled.. My pioneer LDP's were no stronger on the innards.. :) A little low(!) heat (air gun) can buy you just a little bit of flexibility on old plastic.

Thanks Stuart. I think I lost count how many times I gave up, more than I admit to in the video. The whole thing took me about a month of evenings and weekends with a LOT of video to edit down to 30 mins. Thanks so much for your comments. Thanks so much, for the compliment. When I bought it I thought it would need was a new belt! How wrong was I? Those aged plastics were a real shame because otherwise it was a nice thing. EH Nice video super sophoritic voice stop doubting yourself your good at this fix it till it is plain broken completely then give up its good to see your video its very watch able and interesting keep up the good work oh yes great idea using the nail varnish much much cheaper than solder mask and removeable with a bit of nail polish remover or acetone the former being cheaper also great work you now have a new subscriber one last thought if your honest with the buyer how you repaired it I think you could still sell it but that's your decision after all it's a working laser disc player

I did sell the player on, but as spares or repair and with an explanation it had been previously repaired and might not last. I lost a bit of money on it, but that's life. Thanks also for the sub. Thanks, quite a challenge that was. I have another older LD player yet to do it will be interesting to see of its better or worse. I don't think we will have too many of these players left soon. Wow, what an amazing repair, and quite the roller coaster. BTW, for dealing with broken plastics, there is a technique that I and many others have used successfully. If you combine cyanoacrylate (aka super glue) with baking soda, you end up with a surprisingly strong compound that you can use to join broken plastics together again. In fact, this technique works so well that you can actually use it to *re-form* missing pieces of plastics in many cases. The KZfaqr "Tech Tangents" does a much better job of explaining this than I possibly could, and he demonstrates this technique on several of his bits of seemingly irreparable plastics. Search on KZfaq for "tech tangents plastic repair" for that video.

That belt fixed the clamping issue. Now the motor won't spin the disc. I'm about halfway through. Can't believe the motor is burned out. Hoping there's something that is preventing the motor from spinning. The lase is em emitting Light. Also did a full white grease relubricate... ( mine looks to be a very similar mechanism - MDP-455

@@RetroTechRepair any tips on the motor spinning issue? Moves freely with or without a disc. All aligns and no binding. It’s in such nice shape and hate to give up. I’m rather “stuck” at this point.

Thanks Mick. It did test my patience a bit, I was overwhelmed when I saw the complexity, but I did have quite a lot of money in it, perhaps that was the motivation :) "Bones" AKA "Simon" kept me company through it. We adopted him as an adult, but he's very lazy. I'm a cat person too and they have kept me going through a number of hard times. We only have the one due to space, but I think he is the 5th one I've had. You are the first person to comment ton his guest appearance. I think he is at the very end of one of my other videos too, but I forget which one. As for the nail varnish what can I say, they had sold out of green so it must be very popular in Scarborough. Red wouldn't have matched my lipstick I am afraid. As ever thanks for your comments. Always a pleasure.

Thanks Jamie, I should put one on my shopping list. With my very honest eBay descriptions, I tend to lose money on these repairs so I need to managed my acquisitions carefully. I used a loupe magnifier when I'd taped each section of wire in place and again after soldering, but it took me probably 3 days of my spare time to get the tracks repaired. Thanks for you comments BTW... very grateful

Hello! The video has been useful to me. I have the same player. But I have a big problem. When I turn it on, there is a noise like a motor turning. But the disc doesn't spin. I really don't want to lose it. There are very few... Please, if you are there, and can help me, send me a signal!

Hello Woppox. I am here but unfortunately i am not an expert in these repairs and these machines are very complicated so I am not sure I can help much. There are several motors controlled by several microprocessors. You probably need to work out which isnt working. When you put the disk in does the sled move, the laser move up and down and the disk lift off the tray.

I’m trying to fix my d604 player and am having an extremely difficult time finding a 23 pin flat ribbon cable that connects to the laser lense assembly. Any suggestions on where I could find one?

Hallo, iI think the 650 is very similar to the 740 D. My problem is the player doesn't play the discs. We had to repair the tray because it does not work propperly. Now this was fixed we recognized that the player does not read the discs. Any advice for me?

Hi thanks for your question. I am afraid I don't have any advice. I am far from an expert in these repairs. I have a similar problem on another machine I have, but haven't yet managed to fix it. I have a pioneer LD player and all LDs stutter or have like a random hiccups when I play them. Nothing wrong with the discs. What can be the issue for this? Lens or something else??
