i think part of bonanzas enduring sucess was the charisma between joe and hoss .their laughter always seems real and they genuinly seemed to be having fun.hoss is so wonderful i think he must be the most loved tv star of his day so genuine is his acting ...we all love him.it is the same buddiness that rocket racoon and the mighty groot have or thor and the hulk. in fact in the famous san francisco episode we get the moment hysterically funny when they shanghai hoss only to realise that amiable dan has turned into HOSS SMASH. In fact in the next scene after watvhing hoss destroy the crimpers they dont even bother to show the fight just the aftermath of several tough guys hanging from ceilings thrown through doors placewrecked and hoss walking out brushing debris from him.suberb comedy acting.blocker was amazingly good and only after repeated viewings do we realize do we see how good. fantastic show.

In today's world of self-defense, Mark could have asserted a self-defense claim in shooting the unarmed Hoss if Hoss was advancing on Mark and threatnen to kill him or to do him serious bodily injury. The fact that Hoss is clearly physically bigger and stronger than Mark would have helped the defense claim also. It only takes one gun to create a gun fight.
