The start of summer signals returning to the good life. We embrace our slow living ways with joy - weeding, harvesting, creating and getting the keys to our new shop! It’s an exciting time but the sudden increase in temperature forces a slower pace on us all. It is impossible to work in the heat of the midday sun and so we must also make time for rest.

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible. We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way.
When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.

Perhaps find a cover crop or two to plant when you don’t have time for big garden. Will help keep weeds down and improve soil. There is scientific proof that certain microbes in the soil get into your bloodstream when getting your hands in soil. Those microbes help create serotonin in your brain. So yes hands in the soil literally makes you feel good. So cool you guys will have a shop to show and sell your wonderful work! Exciting!

I just found your youtube site today and watched your "purchasing a home in France" series which was very helpful. My fiancee and I are planning on moving to France and just returned from our first travels through the countryside. We plan to buy in two years, so our serious home search will begin in about 10 months. I was interested in your area before I found you on KZfaq. Now I am concerned about the drought and will watch the weather patterns over the next year. By the way, I was an organic farmer and ran a coop in Pennsylvania for a number of years. I also designed and built a superinsulated house that was superinsulated with straw... Look forward to watching your progress! Perhaps we will meet some day! Cheers, Addison

Sounds like you have a great adventure ahead of you! We haven't found the drought to be that bad. I'd recommend rainwater harvesting. The summer storms will fill up water butts in no time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video - the pace of the life you are creating, the sharing of what you love about the life you have chosen to live in France, beautiful location and scenery, interesting weather, the moments that make us pause and wonder, a bit of family life around the edges, the small steps of progress towards big goals, the creative process, your connection with the work and play of every day. Since you have recently been sharing about your channel concerns and asking for feedback, I wanted to let you know what I enjoy about your channel. This video is a great example. I, too, am a creative and have taken on the challenge of bringing new life to old spaces inside and out, am often overwhelmed by big projects, things that don't go as planned and am subject to the toll illness can take on all of life - especially the creative side. Much the same as you have shared with us. I find this content both relaxing and inspiring. I do appreciate the odd funny sketch or moments sprinkled in, and don't think you need to make somewhat forced advertising videos for products or locations. If today's video is an example of what you envision for your channel, with some privacy around your family, I think you will find a very receptive community here. to slow down the growth of weeds in my veggie patch I cover the parts without vegetables with cut grass from the lawn, it also helps with keeping the ground wet. Keep up the great work ;)

There are some years where my vegetable garden hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, and others where it has. I found the Wolf-Garten multi-star garden tiller (I have no affiliation!) has been really useful as it has a super long handle (helps when you're tall), and I can just wheel it up and down the rows once a week. I still have to get in and hand pull around the plants, but using grass clippings (that I've let heat up and cool down after cutting, without matting up and turning slimy) as mulch really lessens the requirements for that. I have a bit of couch grass, but bindweed is a nightmare - you try and fork it all up earlier in the season, but it still comes back with a vengeance! Thanks for sharing. I have a vague idea how much work goes into a video like this, sometimes for seemingly little reward, so it is is appreciated!

I use limnanthes - poached egg plants as a crop to cover the ground. So easy to sow, self sows ,pretty and excellent for hoverfly etc. also very easy to pull up !

Thank you for the update on your garden. I’m happy to see that you got a crop of cherries. I remember when I was a young girl my father would cut the center of the cherry tree branches out. So the cheery tree branches wouldn’t grow so tall. My mother would give us a bucket. They had a long string and had to wrap it around our necks, and a bucket would hang down middle of our chest so we could have both of hands to pick cherries, red currant, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries. To say those buckets were well used was a major understatement! We also would have huge raspberry patch. That myself and my three siblings would pick every other day till their season was finished. I would help my mother make jellies and jams with the raspberries, and other fruits. Then canned them. I remember my parents making dandelion wine. We had lots and lots of weeding.😊 Brook I believe you’re onto something with keeping your mind come with weeding your fingers active it does something. I always used it as a reflection on time of myself, actions, my words, and how I can make myself a better person. Maybe I’m thinking too much.😅 your shop looks like it could be really nice. I hope you prosper in your endeavors with your shop. The Barn wall looks lovely. I believe that space will be well used and appreciated when complete. Thank you so much for sharing. I love the bucket idea! It sounds like you got massive harvests, how wonderful. We've definitely got more fruit than last year so hopefully it'll continue to grow year on year. At the moment the majority aren't even making it into the bucket, they're going straight into little mouths!

The blueberries and blackberries we would pick them wild in northern Wisconsin. We had six rows that were about 10 feet long of raspberry patch. We would cut them down in the fall about 4 foot tall and anything that was silver was cut off. We would nip it off entirely, but I remember the bushes for raspberries would get over 5 to 6 foot tall in the summer, and would be just loaded with raspberries, we also had two rows of red currents had to be at 15 feet long. We also had an apple orchard with pear trees, cherry trees, and we had four grapevines. We also please put 100 chickens every year kept about 25 for laying. We also raise turkeys about 20 of them a year. Also helped the local farmers when they needed extra help or wanted to take a vacation from the farm. My father was the oldest of 13 kids that were raised on a dairy farm. We also raise to sheep each year just because my mom loved lamb chop so much. So between the farmers planning vacations them not wanting to raise chickens and turkeys we would barter with the farmers for a portion of a cow or pig.

We had wild (sour) cherry bushes in our garden in Italy and we made jam from them and also cherry-cello, a variation on limoncello that was also good with raspberries, limes and oranges. Fill a 1L jar with cherries. Then take 95% pure ethanol (available in France and Italy at supermarkets) and top up the jar. Note how much alcohohol you add. Leave the fruit to soak for about 6 weeks. Remove the cherries and to the liquid add the same volume of sugar water (just white sugar dissolved in warmed water). Don't just double the volume as there will be water from the cherries and you need the liqueur at whisky strength so you can put it in the freezer as it's best to drink after dinner ice-cold. Cover the cherries with sugar water too - they will still be quite alcoholic and are great either with desserts or with confit duck.

There’s been studies in recent years of Mycobacterium Vaccae bacteria in the soil. While you garden it is inhaled and absorbed topically and when this happens it increases cytokine levels which in turn increases your serotonin levels.

I don't know if you can get them there, but it made the world of difference for me, so I highly recommend one to you. It saved me so much tedious work, and I was so pleased with it.

I've a small front and back garden. I've 2 raised beds and fruits and vegetables growing in containers in the back also hanging baskets , wall planters, and pots with blooming flowers. The front is just flowers. I love walking around the garden in my bare feet. I find gardening is just so good for me. Saying that I do really try to get things cleaned up and all hanging plants done early I know I don't get them flowering right up to September cause I do it early. I just find if I'm not on top of things by June, I panic and I know I shouldn't because it always comes together and if it's to late for certain plants so b it. The most important thing is enjoying it, especially when you have a young family.

Oh, I so love cherries! I was born and raised in Michigan and we really looked forward to the cherry season. I live in the South now and cherries are non-existent (though peaches are everywhere so I'm not complaining). My grandmother made the most wonderful tart cherry pies. I don't know if you are into making a pâte brisée sucrée but it is really worth a try! Julia Child's recipe is a winner and EASY! Or a "Clafoutis aux Cerises" for breakfast is lovely. No, these aren't health foods, just France's gift to the world, lol. Cheers from North Carolina USA

Hi guys, a lot of people are now turning to raised beds in a big way,I'm sure you have a raised bed, you might want to add a lot more to your garden,so much easier to manage,I've always. suffered with a bad back and digging was always a problem especially if I tried to do too much,something you could think about.

We have some areas where we want to have raised beds. Like you say, far easier to maintain and weed. To do it everywhere I think would be too big an undertaking. Or at least would need to be done over many years. As obviously you need to fill them all! I know there's hugelkultur and other methods but you still need something.

Can you please send me a month of your beautiful weather? It's rained so much here today that I've now got a waterfall down my drive, which has formed a rather large lake onto my front yard! Hello! I was wondering about your reflection that you feel better when you can garden. As you consider what working with the earth does for your nerves, there are various ways in which contact with the earth has a healing effect. Firstly, there are the negatively charged electrons in the earth's soil, which have a strong antioxidant effect. They neutralize the positively charged free radicals. On the one hand, being in the house has the consequence of getting into an electron deficit and often being exposed to high-frequency energies (for example via WiFi), which cause oxidative, inflammatory stress in the body and at the same time getting into a deficit of negative electrons. You can find out more about this in the film “The Grounded” or the book “Earthing”. (Although I would warn against the sheets in times of high stress due to uncontrollable high-frequency exposure in the environment) Furthermore, we live in a symbiosis with the microbiotes in the soils around us, in which our food is ideally grown. A healthy microbiome is necessary for the health of both our gut and our brain. When we work in the earth, we absorb its subtle information and it enriches our microbiome, where it can have an anti-inflammatory effect. I'm not sure of the varieties though, we buy from the local market or nursery. They do do pretty well but the first ones we planted are definitely on the verge of bolting...

Just a suggestion but if you watch videos of Charles Dowding no dig gardening, perhaps you wouldn’t have to do any weeding. The weeds that you do have could be put into a barrel, covered with water and used as a compost tea for your garden. Great work though and it’s all a giant learning curve.

Why don't you mulch... That will contain the weeds and makes your garden more futile and keep the moist in. We live 100/150km south of you in the Berry. Dry summers like yours

I think life lived before people is a loud statement.. I believe you can use the system to benefit yourselves and still remain true to yourself.. reality is you are seeking to live a simple life… look for the positive moments in your life and stay focused in that spot not what is wrong with the ( system) or the human condition…

Brook felt it. I was in a different room and didn't feel a thing. Didn't believe it until I saw the news! Having said that our barn beam that is due to be replaced next month is looking even more iffy now. Fingers crossed it holds out 😬
