Please note, standard deduction is only $12000 when you file 1040NR as non resident alien and not $24000 as the speaker mentioned.

@uditpatidar4725

For the first 3 years after R2I, you are considered on RNOR status with special tax exemptions. You can take enough money out of retirement accounts in the US to be below the taxable bracket, and move funds to India. That way, you only pay the penalty of 10%. Or... you could just keep the funds in the US accounts and let them grow.

if I really loved my life in India, I would have never left in the first place. 🙄I don't miss the oppressive environment, abusive teachers, poor education system, lack of opportunities in arts/social sciences, street/sexual harassment, corrupt system etc. A common mistake I see NRIs make is trying to turn their American born children into Indian kids. Please don't do that. You want your child to belong and not feel like an alien or a misfit where they grow up. I miss the occasional cultural stuff but you can find that at a restaurant or a local temple or desi functions.

Hey Akash. I lived 1998-2004 - Stockholm, 2004-2010 PhD student in Texas, 2011-2014 Rental in New England, 2014-2015 MBA in Ithaca, and 2015-2018 Rental in Bay Area. I guess I never actually had an intention of putting my roots down in the US, and hence never took the initiative to purchase any property.

If you want to live in India with a US passport there's no point. Convert him to an Indian citizen and be patriotic towards your country. It's not good to just hold a US citizenship solely on the basis of the visa-free countries you can travel with that passport. He'll have an identity crisis when he grows up because he's American but yet he knows nothing of life in the US.
