They always say that you should not use stainless steel hose clamps from Lowe's and Home Depot. We show you just how bad these clamps can rust after just a single season attached to a hose in a forward locker. We also have a few tips about how to tighten and loosen them, though most folks will probably already know our tricks.

Really appreciate this video. I'm trying to make a DIY rat cage from materials picked up by my husband from Home Depot. The temp cage I made I used zip ties, but this upgrade is supposed to be with hose clamps... never used them before. I was confounded. Weeks of frustration. But your video was clear and straight to the point. You also provided a context scenario for when they'd be used-marine environment, not rats- but good enough that I can figure the rest out from here. Thank you!

Add one drop of BLUE Loctite before cinching down. No need to overtighten, that actually stresses the mechanism, premature failure. If hose material protrudes from the slots- it's too tight. To make any worm gear drive clamp more permanent- after tightening, use needle nose plires, and roll end up tight, slightly bent; if it can't pull through, it won't loosen. You can't put a price on safety.

+dawntreader70 I have seen those palm ratchets advertised. I will have to try one. The non-perforated clamps are awesome. We use them on the thru-hulls and below the waterline applications, but probably should use them everywhere, although the cost does add up. Did you buy them in bulk?
@dawntreader7079

i bought them from jamestown distributors in bulk. spendy but probably worth it in the long run. as i was working my way through the plumbing system i noticed how the non-perfs were in much better condition than the perffed ones. some of the clamps were probably circa 1979, the age of the boat- some scary looking clamps, thru-hulls and sea-cocks! i replaced everything with bronze from Spartan Marine in Maine.

Amazon sells top quality USA made all stainless clamps from a company in Illinois. And the cost is around 1$ only! Search it up and the selection is fantastic. Had some in my well for 30 years and reused them. From the MFG: The Precision Brand HD-SN series stainless steel worm gear clamp has a series 300 stainless steel band and housing, a stainless steel screw, and is appropriate for heavy duty use in marine environments. A worm gear mechanism adjusts the clamp’s diameter to precisely apply sealing pressure. and the clamp’s four-piece construction gives it strength that helps provide strong clamping. The band’s 9/16” width provides a greater sealing area than clamps of smaller width. The band, housing and screw are made of stainless steel that conforms to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 300 series standard and provides resistance to corrosion in marine environments. The slotted, 5/16” hex-head screw allows installation using a blade screwdriver, nut driver, or socket wrench. The clamp is recommended for maximum torque of 80 inch-pounds. Hose clamps attach hoses to fittings to prevent flow leakage. They come in a variety of designs and distribute uniform pressure over the circumference of hoses to bind them to fittings. Hose clamps are suitable for a large number of industries, and commonly used in industrial, electronic, and automotive applications. Precision Brand Products manufactures products such as hose clamps, shims, keystock, threaded rods, punch and die sets, and wire. The company, founded in 1946 and headquartered in Downers Grove, IL, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

@danbest3401
@danbest3401 8 жыл бұрын
+David Duncan I've always done that (someone probably told me to MANY years ago), but have no idea why the clamps should be done this way. Can you explain this?
@sailingcruiser25
@sailingcruiser25 8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Best My thoughts are you can get the clamps a little closer together, if you put the clamps side by side the screws are wider on some of them and there is a gap in between the clamps. This can make a bubble or crease in the hose which I assume isn't good for any hose. There is also less risk of a clamp getting stuck on the clamp next to it. These are just thoughts off the top of my head, but they make sense to me.
@Returntoseasons
@Returntoseasons 8 жыл бұрын
+David Duncan Interesting. I know there is at least a few places where we would not be able to do this because we can only access the bolt from one side. I wonder if just rotating the clamp a bit so that the two screws are not right next to each other would address the issue or is there something more to it.

One day, I could quietly hear water running through the pipes in our house, but no one in the house was using a sink, shower or toilet. So I went outside to see if a hose was being used. I found a garden hose with water running out of it, and no one around. Found out my mothers friend used one of those worm screw hose clamps to secure a garden hose fitting to the end of a garden hose. He had left the spigot on, so the hose was under constant pressure, and he left the house without shutting the spigot off. That hose clamp was rusted, and eventually broke off from the water pressure, and the water must have been spilling out in the yard for hours. The cost of the water wasted was more than what that cheap hose clamp was worth.

Thanks so much for this video. I bought a hose clamp yesterday and spent about a half hour trying to figure out how to make it smaller or close tighter around a resistance rod on my old broken down exercise machine. In frustration I bent it and did all kinds of things to it. You showed us that the socket on the drill is what tightens it, right? I'm wondering if it is what is already built in to the cordless drill or I need to buy one. I will find out later when I go back to it. Thanks for saving me a ton of time and frustration!

Not quite on topic, but beware of DeWalt style impact drivers and stainless steel fasteners. SS has a strong tendency to gall. Galling is when a thread breaks and balls up against the female side of the fastener. Once this happens everything seizes up. A regular cordless drill works better, but still be careful. I either lube SS threads with turnbuckle lubricant or threadlock it with Loctite 243. 243 is the new SS compatible version of the old 242 variety.

two tips for you. Always have a magnet around to check anything that is suppose to be Stainless Steel. if it clings to the magnet, it ain't good stainless. Secondly, always double clamp your hoses, especially below the water line. Your rusting hose clamp is an excellent reason why you double clamp... it that clamp had failed, it could have resulted in a very water logged boat. its also a ABYC requirement.... hope this helps

Many 1/4 inch drive socket set come with what looks like a screwdriver handle so yo can make nut drivers. There are also various T-handle tools that have a 1/4 inch drive adapter for the same purpose. No need to worry about a dead battery, and you can get a lot of torque with a T-handle. They keep your knuckles back from the clamp too, so less blood spilled and better vision in tight spots.

They sell them in 303 stainless which will rust after so long especially in salt, you want the ones in 316 stainless how to tell is with a magnet it will not stick to 316. lots have stainless but not the screw. I don't know the name but you can get one's that don't have the "threads" they have a bolt but you have to get the right size they don't adjust that far. I only use them below the water line the wont come lose but there expensive.

Personally I wouldn't use a ratchet or a drill to tighten a ring clamp because the extra power and lack of feel increase the chances of over-tightening and damaging not only the clamp but also the hose and whatever is in the hose. I've learned the hard way not to tighten things too tight, trust me. Tighter isn't always better and in fact quite the opposite, causing stresses and weakness. Those hex heads on the hose clamps are for flexi-cable screwdriver tools for doing up the clamps in tight places. If I did use a drill or ratchet, I'd go slow and be super-careful not to overtighten.

The best way to insure you get a good quality stainless steel hose clamps, or for that matter any stainless piece for your boat, is to test it with a magnet. A magnet should not stick to Marine grade stainless, but a magnet WILL to some grades of 'stuff' marked as stainless.

Good points about cheap clamps. BUT!!! You don't have to tighten them to FT (f&*%ing tight) and its actually wrong as you can damage the pipe or rubber or the clamp itself. They should be taught to 3.5Nm and the very big 80mm+ ones to 4Nm) which is quite tight with screwdriver but medium tight with a ratchet and certainly never use an electric tool! ALSO (my second point): If you tighten the clamp properly even with an expensive torque wrench and go tighten it more a day later you will think it has come loose, it has not. This is a characteristic of hose clamps, they don't lose clamping force. The proper way to retighten it is to first loosen it all the way. Good clamp brands: Norma, ABA Sweden (blue ones), Wurth or JCS Stainless made in UK. Even the good branded clamps are less than 1eur each so you have no excuse to get cheap ones unless you're in an emergency! For Marine use they should be rated W4 or W5 (its stamped on the clamp) Sources: SAE automotive clamp specs document, trying to find leaks in my car which were due to crappy cheap clamps various mechanics have put over the years.

Who is they"? I would like to help "them" understand what "they" are talking about. Why give Lowe's, Home Depot (or any other business) a bad report because you do not know what you are buying?! If a hose clamp has a stainless-steel housing and band with a plated steel screw in it (as most do) that screw WILL rust. Especially in a marine environment! Lowe's DOES SELL "All Stainless" hose clamps. Please read the description of what you are buying and know what you are buying. Additionally, in the hose clamp industry, if a hose clamp is not described as "All Stainless Steel" it is NOT ALL Stainless Steel! A good mechanic can tell by sight. The Stainless-steel screws have a unique hue or color. If you need help identifying what you are buying, read the detailed description or simply use a magnet. Stainless steel is (largely) non-magnetic. (There are some exceptions related to a welded fillet area of certain stainless alloys.) If the magnet is attracted to any component part of a hose clamp - that component part has iron in it and WILL RUST! Also hose clamp styles are different depending on the hose material. Make sure you know which type of hose clamp you need for the material being clamped. i.e. - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8lhepOBtZiqqKM.html There are "Lined" or "Shielded" hose clamps that may be much better suited for many marine applications. All Stainless Lined Hose clamps can be searched here: "Ideal-Tridon All Stainless Hose Clamps" All Stainless Shielded hose clamps can be searched here: "Ideal-Tridon SmartSeal Clamps I hope this helps. As always, RBN, USCG Ret P.S. - I've been doing business with FAWCETT's for over 50 years. A great bunch of guys!
