Glowworms are not actually worms, but the larvae of fungus gnats, an insect that looks like a mosquito. There are two types of fungus gnats - those that feed on fungi like mushrooms, and those that are carnivorous and feed on other smaller insects. Haven't watched your videos in a while for various reasons. Good to see you're as entertaining as ever. You're the second Brit who lives in NZ I watched in a row, that extols the virtues of NZ. Unless, as a Kiwi, you lived elsewhere, you wouldn't think, apart from patriotic reasons, NZ is that special. I remember seeing a doctor in London who mentioned her friend couldn't believe how clean our streets were. I was taken aback as I never thought our streets were that clean, and it does depend on where you go, but I can now, after thinking about it for a while, realise why you think that. Yes I do take litter with me till I see the next rubbish bin or I get home. Never thought about it before I left the country for 8 years. And yes, after experiencing Christmas in winter in London, I agree Christmas in summer is something else. I think I might be getting mixed up with the other video I saw, but still I agree with that statement. It's one of the reasons I kept visiting NZ during Christmas and one of the reasons I'm glad I moved back. Hope your guys year turns into a good one.

Camping is almost a rite of passage for kiwis. Amazing how upmarket camping gear has gotten over the years! NZ has some fantastic beach campgrounds. Waipu up north, Pauanui and Tairua Coromandel, Waihi beach, Ohope beach Whakatane, great well run with facilities for all and awesome beaches. A must to experience for any overseas tourist, (if you can get a site that is as they get booked out all summer). Best experience for families with plenty for kids to do.

Great to see you guys back in 2024 - delighted that you have taken "me" time with sun/beach/whiskey etc. I suppose the activities depend on where you are in the country - but in summer you cant beat pick your own fruit (usually raspberries or strawberries) and having real fruit ice creams. Or bush walk and picnic (and New Plymouth has more bush walks then most other places. Of course most councils have a summer season of lights/music after dark - and that is certainly a summer activity. Stay well in the sun Mr G

A previous commenter explained Glow worms so I'll just add a few details... They are the larval stage of the gnat and obviously they glow. They lower sticky silk threads to capture moths which are attracted to the light. When they mature, they basically fly away. Just to clarify for others, the quad bike riders wearing Red Bands... Red Bands are a traditional gumboot in NZ.

Happy New Year. Yes Kiwis either camp very minimally or with everything including the kitchen sink😂 Glow worms are pretty cool. There's a few places down here in the S.I you can see them as well. The weather down here in Christchurch has been getting warmer. Tomorrow and Saturday are showing 29 degrees. Darfield is often a couple of degrees hotter than ChCh. Not looking forward to that😢

I've never understood why people have such flash camping setups - you may as well be at home! It's the same with gas bbqs - got to be charcoal. Otherwise, just use the oven! I guess I'm just not a camping person 😂

It's refreshing to hear people speaking so positively about NZ. I see a few vids of Kiwis saying they can't wait to get out of here - I suspect they'll find things aren't so much better elsewhere. Sometimes, life really is what you make it. I do understand when you're young you tend to be drawn to exciting cities - and Auckland certainly isn't one of them🤐

In Timaru on some evenings you can see the Fairy penguins come up from the beach to their nests in the rocks and it is still light until around 10 that far south.

That's absolutely true, my first year in Burnham in 74 in 75 the daylight saving started, out in the bush it was dark after 10pm then 4am it was sun up ha ha ha not much sleep.

I was brought up camping in NZ and it was primitive. Fire, tent, dug out long drop! I loved it! The camping you talked about first is NOT camping in my book hahaha

There isn't really any nudist beaches in New Zealand because there's no law in New Zealand that says you can't be naked in public so technically every beach is clothing optional. You can't even be arrested for walking down to the local shops naked in NZ. Most people just don't realise that, in fact they think it's illegal, it isn't.

@@warrenjohnknight.9831 Cops would attend to check but they won't do anything. They attend because the is a law that says you can't be lewd in public, but there's no law on the books at say you can't be nude in public. So they attend to make sure you're only nude and not lewd.

My Kiwi Summer: staying at home (under the beach umbrella) drinking cocktails, eating ham, cheese and crackers. Go for the odd café visit and decide the coffee at home is better. Missed the seasonal sales as the shops had nothing good. Beach? You know what HB beaches are like (no swimming, no fires). It's cheaper to stand under a cold shower than go to the public pools, and it's peaceful. Even the 'informal racing enthusiasts' (remember them from your trip here?) have been quiet. Maybe they travelled north for a meet!

How can people relax in a camp while they carry everything including the kitchen sink? 25c is probably the perfect temperature. It surprises me that Brits don't remain active outside during the long summer evenings. I thought in Scotland they'd enjoy being outside until 10pm. I didn’t realise there's no glow worms in Britain. There are glow worm caves in the Waikato but they cost $70. I wish I were a kid again with a quad bike on the beach. Oh dear, locals complaining about the tourists . . . who bring in the money.
