I was an avid model builder when I was 12 to 18 years old. I was a big fan of Revell, Aurora, Monogram and sometimes Lindberg. I made ships, airplanes, military vehicles and later, automobiles. I built a large Lindberg B-17. It may be in a box in my garage. I thought then and now, I was a pretty darn good model maker. My fantasy job was with Lucas. Of course life intervenes and I now collect prebuilt auto models costing much more than the old styrene. I've revived the hobby part building a wood model of a sailing ship. Guys like this have taken the plastic model hobby way beyond what I could have imagined back in the day. By the way, I have a 1962 Revell catalogue with a $.15 price tag. The bicycle and model shop I visited weekly surely gave it to a good customer like me. Looking through it I am amazed at the prices of many models that I bought and thought highly of. As a child of WWII I had the B25, B24 that I thought were great. They were $.98 each!

Just a hint to all my modeling pals out there. Buy yourself a food dehydrator. I use it to dry painted parts. Mine has a cover to keep dust off the parts, I cut out most of the shelf bottoms so larger parts will fit. Cuts a 24 hour drying time down to a hour or so and really hardens the finish. 👍💯

Monogram designed and manufactured the B-17G , not Revell. revell took over monogram and is trying to take credit. . btw, revell manufactured its own 1/48 b-17. it is a b-17 F called the memphis belle and though it fills the gap for a 1/48 scale b-17F, it is not as detailed as the monogram kit..but its spartan interior would be perfect for interior lighting wires and boards..you can spruce up the revell 1/48 b-17F with monogram parts...Revell also made the B-17F in 1/72 scale. i still have both unbuilt in my model collection.

@@fredkitmakerb9479 i did not know that monogram purchased revell! i stand corrected, thankyou.. but i agree with you; it's just not right that revell is still going strong and that monogram is gone. i will always promote Monogram wherever i can. i grew up with monogram in the 50s and 60s and i remember that my revell models couldn't hold a candle to my monogram kits..

Very well done. Congratulations for getting around the difficulties of the modification. I build 1:8 scale die cast models, and some of the mods I install can be difficult to construct for an intermediate. I retire next month and getting back into modeling as a full-time hobby. Times have changed since I was a kid building Revell kits - a re-learning process.

My only bit of constructive criticism is that the fire extinguishers ( the bottles with the nozzles) should be red. Built this kit years ago when it was first issued. May have to build it again if I can find the shelf space. Nice work BTW.

When drilling holes out like that, use a step-bit. You'll increase the size of the hole without drift and you don't have to change out bits as much. Then, when you get close, switch out to the exact size (If it's different then the closest size on the step-bit).
@kwantoon
@kwantoon Жыл бұрын
Step bits are the way to go when it comes to keeping an accurate and centered hole. I found this out while trying to make the center hole in some nylon bushings bigger a few years ago. Most of the time I use a smaller ratcheting screw driver and do them by hand for precise control over the depth of the hole.

You talked about getting people into the hobby. I used to build models a while back but haven't in a while. Recently, I started thinking about starting up again, but a random sampling of kits just stunned me with how much they cost now. A 1/25th car $65.00, a 1/25th truck, $110.00, I think the average price I saw for all the kits I looked at, in general was maybe $120.00. Most of these were kits that would have been in the 8 to 15 dollar range when I was building (and this was in the 80s and 90s). The have just become unreasonably expensive, if I had a kid today who was interested, there is just no way they could do the kind of model building I did back in the day. I realize there is inflation, but these are not just a bit more money, they are crazy expensive now. Model trains are the same. I saw RTR boxcars that were over 50 bucks each. Locomotives are routinely in the multiple hundreds, to put together a train of 10 cars would cost a fortune now. It's a shame, but it's no wonder the hobby is dying.
@breaktimescalemodels

Don’t let it keep you from getting into it. AMT makes great kits to jump back into. As well does Airfix. Airfix has stepped up its game adding new models with great detail for less money. Reach out if you have questions. Price wise at hobby lobby you can get 40% off during random sales with the kits. I picked up cars in the 20$ and then 40% off that. Larger scales you are looking at are more money. 1/35 or 1/48 would be better in price. 1/72 is small be even cheaper.

@@breaktimescalemodels I'm not really talking about myself. If I decide to build again, I can swing 100 bucks fr a kit if it's something I really want, but I was building models when I was very young. There's no way I could do that if I were young now. 20 bucks is a lot of money when your 10. I'm just stunned at how the prices have skyrocketed for even the most standard, basic kits. Unless it's some movie related snap together thing, I think they are just out of reach for a lot of kids who would otherwise be interested.
@chrisnichols4962
@chrisnichols4962 Жыл бұрын
Joe, you can buy the very same basic kits that I started out building in the 60s. They have increased in price of course but are still affordable. I would also recommend attending a model show in your area. These shows have vendors that sell used kits for far less than new. Happy modeling. 😊 👍

A friend built this kit back in the 80s and put electric motors in for the props. He had it controlled by a model railroad rheostat controller, and when he went to full power it threw most of the props violently across the room after moving the plane about 2 feet. He rebuilt it and put a stop pin on the controller where he figured the limit was... this was pre-LED and he didn't want to melt it so he opted to forgo the lights...

actually, the monogram kit is the most accurate kit out there, in terms of fuselage length, wing length and nose length. it's better than the japanese kits and even more accurate than the 1/32 scale hong kong models offering. i know because i have measured the kit fuselage and wings, according to scale drawings. i've measured the other kits as well. though the other kits have more detail, none of them can match the monogram kit for fuselage length, fuselage width, nose length and wing length.
