The Inner Nerd Scale Modelling

7 жыл бұрын

Built with Revell's Eurofighter Typhoon "Bronze Tiger" kit. Xtradecal was used to supply the alternative decal scheme of Squadron 29 'BX' from the RAF Typhoon Display Team 2014.
Overall a terrible kit to build. Gaps, fit issues and miss-alignment of parts occurred in almost every stage of the build making the end result slightly less appealing than anticipated.
as always enjoy the video and leave your comments as I will read them all and get back with any questions left there.
Thank you

Great work on the kit! Revell and Italeri are getting worse and worse with the moulding. (only if they repack, then the model is ok). Got Italeri Stuka - terrible fit, Gripen - problem with fit because of doing both variants from one mould. Keep up good work!

Good build, generally a good kit but the airbrake fit was also bad on the two I've assembled. The intake area is a bit tricky and requires filling but this kit in 1/48 is good value. Cockpit seam tip for novices. After scraping the canopy seam away use a polish specifically for the job or toothpaste or tooth powder then dip in clear floor polish to get rid of any scratches left. I used to use brasso to polish clear parts but one day it damaged the plastic canopy on an Italeri kit. It took ages to get a replacement.

Thank you and welcome! I'm pleased you're enjoyed the videos so far! I use the flat and polishing technique to remove the orange peel texture on the surface created by the clear coat layers. I rub down the entire model with 2000, 3000 and then polish to return to high-gloss. However, having not used the polishing stage on my latest build - Airfix's 1/48 Spitfire Mk14 FR - only completing a flat sand with 2000 & 3000 grit sponges, the surface is glossy enough to accept an oil wash and still use capilary action to run down the panel lines. This will save you time and effort getting it super glossy just to add a matte coat in the end anyway. Hope this helps and good luck! If you've got any more questions just drop me a message

Excellent model. I’m new to model building.Can you tell me what’s the black undercoat you applied to the Eurofighter before you sprayed with the sky grey? Also the clear Matt varnish and clear gloss varnish are these mixed together when spraying the final coat?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you And welcome to model building! 👋 I use a black primer to show any flaws in the surface that have been caused by sanding or part seams. It also acts as a bass layer for the black basing technique I use. This is shown in more detail on these 2 videos kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d650lseqsbnVoYk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdtnksiHm9vTlY0.html As for the final coat, yes I do mix to create a satin coat rather than full gloss or matte. But I find Mr Hobby H102 Semi Gloss clear to be a much more consistent clear coat for this finish.. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions just let me know!

The Inner Nerd Thanks for the advice. Can I just ask the abteilung black oil when doing the panel lines was this mixed with thinners when applied to the model? The humbrol gloss you applied to the model as well after the sky grey ,was this thinned down to be able to go through the air brush. Thanks

Love the work and care you've put into this. When you use "heavily thinned" paints such as XF-1, is it a 1:1 ratio or 1:2 (paint:thinners)?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yeah it's around 50-70% thinned so it only shades the previous layer. Not so much that it pools up or becomes watery but also so the coverage is subtle

Built this model twice now. The big weak spot is the air brake on the fuselage spine, in particular if you want to build it in a closed state. I sanded for more than 90 minutes. Paint and weathering on your typhoon is great, but I think the gaps between fuselage and main wing could have used a bit of putty?
@TheInnerNerd

Just a quick question, how hard would it be to make this up and not glue or fix the fins or gears? Like when you see this die cast models that can be put in flight or on ground?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 3 жыл бұрын
If you mean fully closed and not attach the landing gear at all then I guess it would be just a case of making the doors fit the underside flush. They don't straight from the box so there would be some dry fitting to get them level but it could be done. If you want them posable that would be a big job. There's not enough space inside a lot of kits' bays so the gear cannot be fully retracted into the well. Also the legs are very weak on this kit and won't stand up to the positioning for long. Might be better off choosing an in-flight or gorunded mode and sticking with that for this one.

@TheInnerNerd

Chris Highley Thankyou. I spray away from the model so that any over spray us directed away from the model. Be mindful of the direction of your airbrush as some parts, although not visible from your point of view, maybe in the firing line still. I have a question pertaining to the light gray paint on the wings; did you let that paint dry before brushing it or did you brush it right after applying it? Also, was it applied on a gloss surface or a flat surface?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly when you mean in the video. If you quote the time I will be able to tell you for sure but I think you mean the wash after the colour coat? If so I let this dry, coat with gloss varnish until I build up 3 layers (or high gloss finish, whichever comes first). Then brush on the wash and allow to become touch-dry. Then remove with a dry or slightly dampened paper towel until the wash is removed suitably to match yoir reference images

Hey! Thoroughly stunned by this build! Fantastic job with such a pig of a kit. I'm a scale modeller myself as you've probably noticed from your comments, I'm nowhere near as good as you though. I wanted to ask you, as I have recently flown solo for the first ever time in a Piper PA-28 and have subsequently bought one in kit form, however I don't feel I could do it justice. The aircraft has such a significant meaning to me as it is the first step on the aviation ladder. I was wondering, if I provided you with the kit free of charge how much would you want to build it for me? As I would love an aircraft made to your skill level, especially one this important to me.

Hi i recently purchased this model and I don't really have much experience with this stuff I mainly do warhammer 40k but wanted to branch out would warhammer paints work or would you recommend a different set of paints?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh okay. The Warhammer paints will work but I find them not really suitable for airbrushing - although I struggle with all pure acrylics when airbrushing. AK's 3rd Gen Acrylics really don't agree with me either. I would recommend AK Interactive Real Colours. They'll make a set suitable for this model in the RAF greys and they can be thinned with the Real Colour thinner to around 40% thinner. I have another video which might help with all of that here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZmqd9B73Na0k40.html The Citadel paints are good for small details though (unsurprisingly I suppose) so keep hold of them for scale model making too. I use the primary colours from Citadel to detail cockpits and wheel bays. Hope this helps and good luck :)

@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 ай бұрын
It takes a lot of paper towel to dry the brush. Thinning them down will only make the paints more difficult in tis case, you need the paints thick and therefore more 'dry'. A stiff brush which short hair I find to be best, although vs, Citadel paints will always be a challenge.

Mert Eroğlu Like in the video, apply as a clear lense, allow to dry and a gloss lense will cover the instruments below. Build up in layers to create a larger or thicker area of coverage

Unfortunately not. I do make commission builds but only on Military Vehicles and cars & motorbikes. Aircraft are far too fragile to be shipped. If you are interested in any of these drop me an email the.inner.nerdyt@gmail and we can discuss :)

why is it on your other videos you shade the panel lines while in this one you didnt? also, why did you have to sand and saw some of the parts? I notice it wasn't flushed to the model, is it because of production flaw? sorry if these questions are silly, I'm still a beginner at these
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 7 жыл бұрын
DaekTwentri The weathering on the Typhoon is only subtle, not like a WWII subject. To reduce the dirt on the panel lines created by post shading I decided to miss this stage out, leaving only the wash to create dirt. As for sawing parts and heavy sanding, almost all of the parts had fit issues so I had to saw/sand a lot of material to get things to fit suitably
