Lol, there's a reason I did everything I could to move back to Japan from Canada after being back in Canada for 2 years. (I was also a security gaurd who watched Netflix all day in Canada LMAO) So happy to be back in Japan.

Unfortunately, things have changed a lot even for those of us staying in the same place, over the last few years. (I'm in California.) But the pandemic definitely accelerated a lot of it. I have friends in Toronto, and they say there has been less change there than in the States.

Many excellent points in this video. I agree with a lot. Prices have gone way up but it really has been non stop increase in pricing for over a decade and prices for housing etc. went up at an even faster pace during covid. I think many of your points have been there but greatly increased during covid. So the seeing people with mental issues increase. It had already increased with reduction of funding for mental health and a lot of people who used to get help and had places to go, no longer had those places and were out in the streets more. But also during covid I think the number of people with mental problems greatly increased and you see it EVERYWHERE you go now. From the subway trains to where ever you go in the city. It is in your face. I would say there were certain areas in the past where you know you would see it more but now it is all over. As for the reduction in service, again, so many people laid off and treated poorly during covid so many businesses lost good workers and at this point just getting a staff back is hard enough. Like you said, many people don't really want to be there, many people feel zero loyalty so they will quit in a heartbeat if they are not happy with their job, and also because everyone is looking for workers it is easy to jump from one job to another these days. So as soon as a better job comes, see you later! And imagine a work force where everyone is starting over, meaning re-training of staff, lack of experience, and the fear of putting in the work and losing the worker, it all plays a part. It really is some nutty times here. I think in Japan people didn't lose their jobs in a similar way as I believe most places remained open, so the structure remained in place better. Great video topic, I enjoyed! Cheers! :)

Fashion has shifted in America, especially with younger people. Thrifting, vintage, wearing clothes that look aged is what's in now. Wonder if that it part of it.

I can't say for sure which I will make my permenant home. For now, my family and career are going to keep me in Canada. But who knows. Plus we have Mayu's family in Japan so that might be a reason to move back someday as well.

I didn`t really experience culture shock when I came to Japan 23 years ago. But now we are toying with the idea of moving back. Thing is I have literally been in Tokyo half my life. The most formative years of self discovery. What I fear is that when we return it will not be the Canada that I left.
@ozzy78
@ozzy78 2 жыл бұрын
I know how you feel. And that was my fear as well. I won't lie, things are quite different than what I knew more than a decade ago so for you it's going to be even more of a shocks. Some things have improved, many things are the same, and some have gotten worse. But as long as you are open to change, you should be able to adjust over time. Especially if you still have friends and family here.

Luckily, I have two friends since kindergarten still residing in Kitchener (Oktoberfest!!) and a high school friend from Cambridge, who shared ten of those years in Japan as my neighbor, living now in Ottawa. And my mom!! I think what I am going to miss most leaving Japan is their spot-on level of sweetness; clean public toilets and restaurant kitchens; shower toilets; and the zoning laws. As you already know, anything you want for daily life is at least within a ten minute bike ride. So many independent shops built into the community. Ooooh, I will miss the bike rides!! Oh yes, and a shout out to my most wonderful cousin, the whole reason why I am here, who lives in Burlington and is the godmother to our daughter Niko!!!
