It's engine noise played through the speakers, but the majority of what you hear is from the engine and exhaust.

Hard to pick an all-time #1 but I'd say that the Shelby GT350 and Jaguar F-Type (both the R and V6) are two of my favorites. The CTS-V is near the top of the list as well.

The reason for only having a 6 speed automatic might be, that the electric motor has a 2 speed automatic as well.

A definitely future classic car. For $150k this car isn't cheap and the performance with only 362hp is definitely on the low end of the scale. However the fact it can be plugged in at home and do full EV driving & still achieve ~50mpg in hybrid mode is impressive. Also, just look at it; my mother thought they were testing a prototype concept on the roads when she saw one. As the trend towards electrics continue, cars like the Model S & i8 are proof electrification doesn't necessarily mean cars have to be boring.

chrisgoes bleh how does the 100d do post 75 mph? I had an opportunity to spend some time in a 90d this summer and the acceleration from 0-60ish was unreal. It really petered out though after that. Just curious if the 100d really makes a big improvement on total acceleration? I know it has a quarter mile advertised in the high tens but I never saw anyone get a 90d close to advertised quarter mile times in person.

I would say if you were to add cylinders, keep it at 3, or add 2 to make it 5. 3 and 5 sound fantastic, 4 generally does not.

ppl give v6 camaros and ecoboost mustang hard time for it but this is a 3cyl car and is all good? if is not a v12 is not a supercar

Good review. I8 doesn't make sense from a value perspective (even if you accept that it's more of a daily driver, the m240i xdrive probably does that just as well for vastly less). Good proof of concept, but seems like they have a lot of work ahead of them if they want tk deliver a compelling electric product that will have more than super niche appeal.

The only thing this car has lacking are the wheels...ZZZZZZZ! I saw one at a cars and Coffee with some matte aftermarket wheels, can't remember the brand, maybe I-forge and it changed the whole look of the car. I heard a 4 cylinder turbo is going to be replacing the 3 pot but honestly, with the right muffler and downpipe, the 3 pot would sound unGodly!

The i8 will get an update next year, but rumors are saying that performance-wise only 15hp more are to be expected. That's a shame, i'm sure BMW could fit an Inline 4 in there and make it 450ish hp. This plus larger tyres and you have an actual sport car.

The skinny tires might be due to the compromise of sportiness and fuel efficiency. After all they also wanted this car to be seen as a sporty and ecologic car. (the combined fuel rating of fossil engine and electric engine lowers the consumption number to only 2.1 l/100km)

Imagine this thing with a V8. Then it could be a true R8 or even Huracan competitor. Yes I understand it's meant to be more futuristic, that doesn't mean it was the right move for the car though lol

The point was to make a sport car that is actually eco-friendly, a V8 would've deceived the point. This car has never been supposed to compete with the R8 or the Huracan, it's just because it looks like it should that people think so.

- Just did some searching: According to Bimmerpost, there is artificial 'Active Sound Design' audio systems both inside and outside of the i8. There’ll be three different “tones” of *virtual* engine sound pumped into the cabin depending on whether the car is in Comfort, Sport, or Eco Pro drive modes. - Sounds like a nice way of saying 'fake.'

Thomas Ferrugia Do you expect me to take Bimmerpost as a valuable source ? It's just a forum. And Active Sound is pre-recorded engine sound with some frequencies played higher to give an impression of louder intake noises. The difference with the system on the i8 and the rest of the cars is that the i8 uses it for its exhaust as well.

Kaisuke971 : Do you expect me give to a $hit that you don't take Bimmerpost seriously? I merely did a Google search and that was one of the articles that popped up. A lot of other reviewers and critics also stated that the sound is entirely synthesized; this 'Bimmerpost' was simply one example.

A sicence project is exactly what this car is. I watched a show on the production of the I8. The manufacturing of this car was really interesting. No reason to complain or hate on the I8. Its exactly what its designed to be.
