Even ignoring the "self-insert" issue that happened, Jared is still a boring character and the show never does anything cute or interesting with him and Blossom. He only exists just to create conflict in the episode.

I don't know about the supposed 'not self-insert' claim, but if you watch the interview with the show's creators and writers, he acts very creepy when he talks about blossem. He starts sweating and stuttering, and I almost got sick.

And some of those plays--*coughHairsprayandWestSideStoryandGreasecough* are way too mature for supposedly-five-year-olds to be in. I'm imagining the "Baltimore Crabs" scene with Blossom in it and it's...not good. Hell, their puns are horrendous, the humor sucks, one of the original Powerpuff Girls went spiraling off the deep end and this show is still making episodes...can this decade be over already?

I find it funny about the Jared Situation with the Phantom references when the show itself is about a man who is supposed to be in his 70’s chasing after Christine who is in her 20’s.

You know the title would have worked better if they called it a star is blossoming instead of just blossom. Because at least you could consider blossoming to be a lot like a plant being born or being brought to life in a way. So at least there would have been a slightly more clever play on words in there. See look it took me 2 seconds and I figured out a better title then staff of a show who's probably supposed to revise the title a ton. Even if it doesn't solve the bubbles being the star issue it's still better. Like how did they make it so bad?

This show seems to have a weird pattern of picking the wrong girls for certain roles. Making Bubbles a Programmer instead of Blossom. Making Blossom an actress instead of Bubbles. Making Buttercup the leader of a band instead of Blossom.

Here's the problem with the Jared issue; this comes from the same people who made the claim that they weren't going to do anything cliche with the reboot, using that as footing to prove themselves superior to the OG show. They made the claim they weren't going to age up the girls, have them fall in love and all that shit but every promise they've made has been broken and with Jared it's possibly the worst because if his character were meant to be a joke, he's not funny and no amount of forcing him into the show is going to make people like him. Jared and Donnie are one in the same as they were created by people who were so certain of themselves that their new characters would be beloved right from the start they never took into consideration that viewers are going to love a character just because the CREATOR loves them. Even if the whole thing with the person who Jared is based on isn't true, the character himself is still shit. The reboot has had a terrible track record when it comes to introducing and handling not only older characters but their own as well, good or bad and this far in, we can't say it's just one or two little hiccups. They seriously can not write decent characters to save their lives and given we have MORE Jared to come....prepare yourself, Streaky. Just prepare yourself. And really? An APOLOGY? Hailey still hasn't apologized to all the women she fucked over when she made the claim that they can't like heroes like Spiderman and ect. Did the show issue an apology with the Donnie thing as well? Did they apologize for making Bliss one big race-card stunt even after she bombed as a character? I don't EXPECT ANYTHING from these guys anymore since I've seen their behavior and how they treat other people. I've long since accepted what type of people work on this show so I am not holding my breath for any sort of mature behavior from them. If they do apologize for anything, good on them. We can all move on and do other things but it's not something I'm standing around and waiting for. They acted since the beginning that what they were doing was the second coming of Christ in animation. Do you think an ego like that will take a step back to evaluate the things they've done, the older and newer fans they've pissed off, ect? I don't know, I don't care. The show was AWFUL but there are much better reboots to enjoy than this slop. I really hope years from now, this reboot is used in animation and writing classes as what NOT to do when it comes to making an older property updated for modern audiences.

Ok, this is how I would have written the episode (if the kinda creepy romantic subplot has to be included). Instead of being a jealousy episode, the girls hear that the school is going to put on a play, and that there are try-outs. Blossom hears that Jared wants to get the leading male role, so Blossom decides it could be fun to get the female lead, so the two of them could spend more time together, get to know each other better and such. The only problem is that Blossom is a terrible actress, but luckily Bubbles is willing to coach her. However Blossom is scared of failing the audition, so she asks Bubbles to take her place. She does and Blossom gets the leading part because of this, but Blossom keeps asking Bubbles to keep up the charade during rehearsals, because she's scared of messing up in front of everyone (could kind of play into Blossom's perfectionism and fear of failure maybe). If we have to go with the whole cursed play too, making the director a villain who did it on purpose would be more interesting and make more sense. Maybe the play itself is all part of the spell, so there could be a line about how they never had a dress rehearsal or done the entire play from beginning to end. Instead of the spell summoning Erica the Red, it could give the director the power of Erica the Red, and she wants it to be read in front of a crowd because she's obsessed with theatrics. Then during the battle, the director reveals that she knew Blossom used her sister, but didn't care since it didn't make a difference for her, as long as the play went as it was planned. She then incapacitates Bubbles (it's kind of a copout, but the show does it all the time, so whatever), and Blossom realizes that in order to stop the director, the play needs to be finished (I think Erica the Red should be the play's villain and the play ends with her spirit getting sealed away in the script itself). So Blossom explains the situation to the rest of the cast and they play through the final scenes while Buttercup keeps the director from stopping them.

I think the creepy thing is that some people have been point towards the fact that the voice actor actually had a crush on Blossom in some interviews if my memory serves me correctly.

Well this episode. Thank you for this review. I was looking forward to your views on it and you didn't disappoint. You know this story could've been interesting if Jared ended up having the same fate as Norman Maine... except that's not kid friendly in any version of A Star is Born. This whole situation was just creepy. I remember a rumor about Hey Arnold where an older woman was going to flirt with Arnold only to have her written out of the show. I don't care if you make the character younger, if it looks like you then it's creepy. It would be like if someone remade Johnny Bravo but gave six year old Suzie a love interest Jared style. Just no.

For the obnoxious Jared and Blossom segments, Blossom herself being at her worst and the fighting scene I still love that face Blossom makes at 17:28, it's by far one of my favorites from the show. lol It's literally the only redeeming thing in the episode. By the way I want to buy the cover of Shadow Ghost of the Opera.That should also be a movie damnit. Plus Shadow's avatar can rock that dress surprisingly. Guess you can say A Star has Blossomed! Honestly though these puns have just become bad, normally I like me some bad puns, but these are just lazy. That Jared roast also made me want get some whole wheat bread. For the whole situation, I honestly think that while nothing was intentional and the entire "self insert" thing was taken out of context, the staff's lack of responsibility and unwillingness to step forth on their behalf just ruins their credibility. It just shows they really don't care in the long run. And that's sad. They're basically willing to have misaimed claims thrown at them with unfortunate implications, than state some kind of apology. Doesn't come off very good.

If they were going for pun titles, the plot of the episode is closer to All About Eve than it is to A Star is Born.

I agree, the title isn’t fitting (I’d rather go with “A Star Has Blossomed” since Bubbles “blossomed” into being the star), they did an inaccurate title Act cards for the episode and why didn’t Buttercup or Bubbles just use their super strength to burst out!? The Jared thing, we already know of, so I’m not gonna go into that. Thanks for the review!

I can't get over the fact that the guy low-key looks like Will Roland and additionally considering that his name is Jared and that the plot is based pretty heavily on plays certainly isn't helping (for those that don't know, Will Roland is an actor who was in the OG cast of Dear Evan Hansen and guess what, he played the character named Jared)

The part with Buttercup flying back and forth on the screen reminds me of the Dragon Ball Z Abridged movie where Vegeta is constantly getting punched back by Cooler.

As a dramatist I WILL defend the show on the "How many years have passed" part. Schools can sometimes do two musicals in one year (Though usually it's one straight play and one musical to give each type of actor a chance to perform) so this could imply it's the third year of the PPG being in this school. (AKA The 6th play.) If we follow the fan theory that in this canon the PPG should be about 10 (AKA The magical age for most cartoon protagonists) that would somewhat make sense.

Does the 2016 show support females in any way? Taking away one of the best woman characters in the history of cartoons, taking away female characteristics in a returning woman character, bringing in new female characters who are either stupid, boring, uninteresting, badly written, or all of the above, new female villains who are either boring or who never life up to their potential, and female superheroes who are rarely seen as strong or even as good superheroes. Just another thing that the reboot lacks when compared to the original.

Even so, the Powerpuff Girls don't need a love interest because they're only 5-6 years old! You go into great depth and you point out what's right and what's wrong with certain episodes. Keep it up!

I thought of a rewrite all the Powerpuff Girls want to be in the play because they need something to do when they aren't fighting crime. Then all 3 of them get in instead of Princess. Then Princess bribes the director to make her the star. Then The Powerpuff Girls teach her a lesson by dressing up like the director and taking his place. They lure the director into a room and game of chairs is on and he is hooked he is so distracted he won't leave. Then they make Princess do a bunch of humiliating things. Meanwhile every one in the school is hypnotized by game of chairs and watches it.

That sad moment where my least favorite powerpuff in the reboot is my favorite of the three. How do you make a character that annoying and unlovable.

ay kudos for not singling my name out while talking about the whole Jared situation. Honestly, the only reason I was able to say anything was because I was no longer on the show and didn't have to worry about CN pr coming for me. Even then, Gizmodo still used my tweet thread without my approval to cover for CN. In that thread some animation industry person with a lot of followers was spreading the (anti-semitic fueled) 4chan conspiracy without knowing anything or anyone involved. As someone who actually knew the guy and as the only one who could really stick up for him and speak freely, I did my best to set the record straight. By that point people were labeling him as a pedo and that was going too far. Why am I talking about this years after the fact? I happened to come across it and eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ no one really cares now anyway. Congrats on finishing reviewing all the PPG 2016 eps, I had fun watching the ones on the eps I boarded :B PPG 2016 was a mess but it was my first industry job so I can't say it was all bad.

4:43 missed oppurtunty, I feel since the show hasn't been all that explict as showing that the Girls have aged from children, it makes this pretty weird. So If were to think blossom is around child age, i'd imagine a childhood crush is something more soft and heartful than sexual attraction. Like for the dreaming of Jared, instead "Mascualine Tall, Man" it would be: "large Soft monster, with clouds as fur, shiny white teeth and a small grin." It goes into more aspects I'd think a child would focus on more, since that's likely what they find emotionaly attractive on the other kid.

Despite all this about Jared, im disappointed they went to great lengths in 'snow month' to show blossom isnt into dating Jared. Then they turn around and make blossom suddenly infatuated with him. Its just inconsistent and cliche with no interesting twist to it. Theres no big reason for blossom to like him, not even a turnaround or "i regret turning him down"

As a theatre kid myself a normal play can take up to two months to memorize the scripts and scene set up and much more Which means she would have spent ten months with the school plays which would give her two months break from the theatre. But we don’t see blossom do any plays in the episodes we know which would mean the the entire show takes place in about two months
