I was friends with Charlie Patton who used to run the T & P 610. Charlie was born in 1888 and died at 102 in 1990. I loved hearing his stories.

I've been enamored with this engine, several times i've caught myself watching the video over and over again. So much in fact I pulled the trigger and just bought 2 today. I don't really care about future value (i only buy if i like it). But I think in a couple years this engine will command a pretty penny. Nice work james and thanks for your time in getting these videos out for us all to enjoy.

Elesco Feedwater Heater. Uses steam exhaust to pre-heat water before entering boiler. Steam inside the heater condenses and runs back to the tender. Round object on tender deck is an oil skimmer to remove steam oil mixed with the exhaust steam from the heater.

Thank you for a very nice review, James. Well done! Broadway Limited is my main company for affordable Steam Locomotives ... and they have a very nice selection! My favorites are my old NYC J-1e Hudson, and N&W J-611 Excursion Steam Locomotives ... but ALL of their steam stock is impressive! Especially impressive are their brass hybrids! What detail!!! Keep 'em coming!

I gotta get the 610 as a regular Texas and Pacific locomotive. This engine sits on display in Palestine TX at the Texas State Railroad. Bachmann has also come out with a locomotive in service at the Texas State Railroad. She's Texas and Pacific 316 (formally 201). She is a 4-6-0. Bachmann came out with her in HO scale. Sadly it's DC only. No DCC and sound. 316 is the oldest locomotive in service in Texas. That 610 is huge and so heavy 316 has lots of struggle pulling her out and back in. Impressive she pulled the American Freedom train on the Texas portion of the tour.

it should tell you on the exploded parts diagram what the cylinder above the headlight is, my guess is its for auxiliary air pressure?

The big round cylinder on the top front of the boiler is a feeder water heater that was used to heat the water with steam used from the cylinders to increase fuel efficiency.

I know this video is 5 years old, but the plug on the tender is actually male while the the locomotive is female. Also I was recently considering buying a Paragon 3 Southern 2-8-2 that I found new on ebay, but reading the forums about all the problems they have changed my mind.

Great looking locomotive and price is justified, however the sound could use some help. Also like most model locomotives the chuff is started at the initial movement which is not typical for any steam locomotive. MTH figured that out, but most others have not.

Don't listen to randy galp the texas type steam locomotives were not 3 cylinder engines. I'm with the group that owns Bessemer and Lake Erie 2-10-4 643. Having been under the engjne 643 is a 2 cylinder engine same as T&P 610. Even the CB&Q's 2-10-4's were 2 Cylinder. So 4 chuffs per driver revolution is correct.

KZfaq is a great resource. There is a free model railroad magazine that is online-only called Model Railroad Hobbyist. I would also recommend going to a local train show to purchase your models, specifically rolling stock. It is often a much cheaper route compared to hobby shop prices on rolling stock. I recommend buying a new locomotive, though. You are pretty much guaranteed no problems with it compared to buying one used. As for track, highly recommend Kato unitrack. A little pricey, but great for beginners in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Why are there curtains in the cab?
@Lepper36
@Lepper36 7 жыл бұрын
Steam Locomotive Cabs tend to be open to the elements, so quite a few were equipped with either curtains or doors. This became more common practice with oil fired or self feeding coal fired locomotives, as the fireman just needed to make sure the fuel was flowing correctly.

James this model may be a 2 cylinder , if so then 4 chugs per rotation , however most of the 10 wheeled drivers had 3 cylinders and would have 6 chugs per rotation .
@adaribros
@adaribros 8 жыл бұрын
It is 2 cylinder. Except for the SP and UP 4-10-2's most were two cylinders.
@mesenteria
@mesenteria 8 жыл бұрын
Not so. The Texas Type, of which the T&P had the first (hence the name given to the ten-coupled with twin axle trailing truck) was twin cylinder simple steam. Many of the 2-10-4 DID have "boosters" in one of the trailing truck axles, but that isn't a 'third cylinder' per se. It would have been dis-engaged at speeds higher than about 10 mph.
@adaribros
@adaribros 8 жыл бұрын
+mesenteria yes. So it will most of the time have 4 cylinders. It'd be cool if someone would add a booster sound on a decoder

@steamandsmoke97
@steamandsmoke97 7 жыл бұрын
It is not, Steam Locomotives do not have superchargers at all. They have superheaters and they're within the smokebox and boiler tubes of the Engine. The Object he can't figure out is an Elesco Bundle-Style Feedwater Heater.

You should LEARN about steam locomotives before you review them. I suggest the LOCOMOTIVE CYCLOPEDIA series from the Railway Mechanical Engineers.
@jlwii2000
@jlwii2000 8 жыл бұрын
Easy for someone to say I need to learn about every steam locomotive before I review them. This is not my job, this is a service. I already consume way more time than I should providing this service. So no, I'm not going to take even more time and learn about every locomotive I review. That is what the prototype information I provided during the low speed testing is for. Thanks for the comment and the reference.
