I met Andre Previn several times in the late 1980s, through my job at Tower Records. He had just re-recorded Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast", so I asked him if he planned to do the same for Lambert's cantata "Rio Grande", which he'd previously done in 1974. Previn quietly said, "No. Once in a lifetime is enough for that piece".

My favorite element of The Rio Grande is the extraordinary way it ebbs away to the end. It's absolutely magical and not a little surprising.

C.L's father was the Australian painter George, while he was the father of Kit who, amongst other things was the Who's manager. He also wrote a piano sonata which is never played, but which is an extremely impressive and powerful work.

I am a great admirer of Constant Lambert. I love the Rio Grande and a short piano piece called Elegiac Blues, but my favourite work of Lambert's and, indeed, one of my favourite works of all time, is his ballet suite Horoscope. I love this music very much. It is certainly of its time, but I recommend it to all who are receptive to jazz-inspired classical music of the 1930s.

I emailed Hyperion about buying some of their CDs, and they told me they are only available as CD-Rs. It doesn't say that, of course, on their site, so anyone buying them won't know what they're buying. To confuse matter further, some of their available CDs are real pressed CDs and some are CD-Rs, so you never know which is which unless you ask; a horrible business practice. Personally, I refuse to buy CD-Rs. It's an inferior product with a much lesser lifespan. I really do hope they start reissuing their stuff on REAL CDs.

It's unlikely. The business model is not sustainable. Just look at Disney who even with phenomenal advantages of scale are basically no longer creating any physical media for the Southern Hemisphere any more. (Australia just got its last Disney movie disc this week.)

@@mike-williams I don't care what they sell. I just want them to disclose that what they are selling are CD-Rs. But very few companies disclose that up front, and we all know why. Because they know many people won't buy CD-Rs, so they choose to keep consumers in the dark. A horrible business practice. Also, Disney is full of shit. They should spend more recourses on paying their artists and less on sucking up to the public, pretending to be "woke."
