When you work for the company that created the two most revered and copied bass models ever, what do you do next?
Fender's classic designs remain the go-to axes for countless bassists, though some Fender models have not been as widely cherished. Such was the case with the Modern Player Dimension bass that Fender released about a decade ago, but retired after a few years. Now a new Dimension series has arrived. These basses integrate many popular components into a forward-thinking design aimed at players seeking a modern alternative to a P or J.
Our Dimension Bass IV HH arrived in a slick, TSA-certified, ABS molded case. I was instantly smitten. This blonde beauty had a lot going for it out of the gate, with its maple fretboard and a beautiful ash body finished with gloss polyester. Bonus: The case candy includes strap locks, a cable, and a strap.
A pair of humbucking pickups (hence HH) announces that this is not a traditional Fender bass. The 3-ply pickguard has a sweeping look similar to a Fodera Yin Yang, and Fender has upped the hardware ante with a high-mass bridge. Knurled knobs control the volume and 3-band EQ, while a 5-way switch selects pickups.
Flipping the bass over reveals a 5-bolt offset neck heel and a battery panel for the 18-volt electronics. While I prefer tabbed battery covers for convenience, Fender made the screw drives wide enough for a coin, so there's no need to scramble for a screwdriver if you have change in your pocket.
The Dimension arrived with low action, and its oil-rubbed, asymmetrical C-shaped neck (thinner on the treble side, thicker on the bass) is very fast. The bass felt great overall, though some frets have sharp ends that need a bit of dressing. It's nicely balanced and doesn't dive when strapped up. The bass really sings, even without an amp.

I'm wondering if - when they split the pickups - if Fender could have designed the neck pickup to split into a Precision Bass split pickup configuration on the sensing poles instead just the straight line of pole pieces.

They probably did it to move completely away from thier more usual basses and to come up with something truly new for Fender. I like it! Needs some compression though...

I use the inner coils 99% of the time. It is just such a great tone. Super sweet bass with soooooo much flexability

Can you use this with no battery and it still work but in a passive mode?

Just to clarify: It doesn't have "graphite truss rods" but rather, it has a normal metal truss rod that you adjust with the wheel at the neck heel. You can do this without removing the neck. The truss rod (singular) is not graphite.

It's Fender trying to take a crap on MusicMan and Warwick and missing drastically. Then the poop on the ground morphed itself into what's trying to be a good bass guitar, but epically fails at it. Seriously Fender should stick to they're Jazz, Precision and Jaguar basses because this is a disgrace. It'll never catch on as a standard. I've played Squiers, Sterling SUBs and Epiphone basses that were better than this garbage!

FrostByte Well in a way, Fender is copying Fender because Leo did found Musicman after he sold Fender in the 1970s. IDK, guys, I like the Dimension basses. They're innovative; people are bitching so much about how Fender spits out the same shit every year and when they do release something unique, everyone goes all "WTF!"

I play P's & J's because they're classic from 50's till now, tons of mods & improvements available, tons of parts available, & all that keeps the price reasonable. I WANT to like this bass approach, but it's just a MM Stingray -- which I respect, but have never actually liked anytime I played 1 in the past 20 years.

Good demo, One thing I'd like to hear is; The EQ setting on the bass ex/ Are they set all in the middle? All treble? No Treble? some Bass and no mid? You get the point and then the EQ settings of the Amp, Is is all at 12 o clock? No Trebble and so on. Otherwise good job. I like switching from a pick yo fingers and going through the pick up config. Thanks.

Sounds like they tried cutting into the G&L L2000 and Musicman’s stingray HH. Sounds like a cross between the two. At least the two I’ve previously owned.

Strangely familiar. FENDER-stick with what has worked for you. Precision, Jazz, Jaguar, STOP! Hire some MORE people (to help OUR economy) and offer custom shop paint schemes, different hardware, etc..Keep your heads and give us more freedom to chose. You MIGHT be surprised as to what can happen. BUT, keep the prices more reasonable to the player? (after all, that is what they are meant to be used for) Leave MusicMan, G&L, Warwick, Spector, Gibson, etc. out of it. And, GIBSON, that includes you guys.

Give infinite paint options/schemes to the working class musicians instead of having to sell your house and van to get what these collectors are getting. AND make them here. HERE in thee USA. AND, keep the price point down so that we can ALL be happy. Instruments are made to be played, not stared at.

It took 60 years for Fender to produce an "OK" Bass Guitar. WOW. and yet this doesn't even comes remotely close to the awesomeness of a Rickenbacker 4003 or (almost any) Warwick. I respect Fender fan boys, but man o man....do they still have a LOOOOOOONG WAY TO GO before they can say they have a great sounding bass. Keep trying Fender....maybe in the next 60 years you'll get it right.....finally.

Leo Fender who designed Fender basses and guitars, sold off Fender Musical instruments Company in the 1960's to a company that, in general, did not improve them. Leo Fender designed and built the StingRay bass as well as G&L basses so these really are Leo Fender made basses and not copies. The Dimension is a copy of a Stingray 5 HH. If you cant beat em join em I guess,

So it is safe to say you found the video of the MusicMan Cutlass and called it a shameless copy of a P bass? Also you may as well throw the G&L L2000 that Leo designed as a shameless copy of the Stingray. SMH
