A great hack for bladders/hose/magnets is to get a retractable ID badge holder with a carabiner. The plastic strap for the ID will go around the hose and then the carabiner can attach to the pack. With that the hose will never flop around and it is even easier to grab and drink and just let it fall out of your mouth and it retracts back to your waist. Was a game changer for my Osprey hip pack.

I'm using a Deuter Pulse 3 with a Osprey 1.5 l water bladder. I love the combo and the way a hip pack feels while letting my back breathe. It's awesome!

I went from a full-time CamelBak backpack to racing with bottles in kit to full time bottles daily. It's been five years since I've ridden full-time and the fanny-pack idea has been one of the most successful transitions for MTBers. Everything is there in a little setup, just grab and go. I grabbed a used Dakine Hot Laps 5L and ordered a new Mazama bladder all in for a out $42. Love your review!!

Great Review! Thanks! I have been really enjoying my Fjallraven Ulvo hip pack from Sweden the past few years. I would describe it as ultra light and simple, high quality, reasonably priced ($55), and very well designed (small on the outside and big on the inside). It's long enough to fit a higher volume mini pump, a disposable bottle of water and all of my tools. It's not quite big enough to squeeze a tube in there with the water bottle, but I feel it starts to get a little too heavier at that point, so like you I carry the tube on the bike. The shape of the pack allows it to fit close to my back and comfortably under a riding jersey which makes jersey pockets available for other stuff. It doesn't have a fancy wide waste band like the EVOCs, but it's easily adjustable on the ride and I've never felt it was uncomfortable for the amount of weight I'm carrying. Thanks again for your review.

Thanks for the review and sizing details - it's difficult to find reviews or even any gear for women dirt bikers, so your waist pack review for mountain backing is extremely helpful to me! I'm one size up and plan on getting the evoc hip pack pro so it doesn't dig into my waist like my current patagonia one.

I ride an Osprey Savu 5. I prefer a water bottle style hip pack. Osprey stuff is engineered super well AND they have a lifetime warranty, no questions asked! I also use their Raptor 14 backpack, which is super amazing. cheers!

i've got the Osprey Seral 7l hip pack,fully loaded it can bounce a little when going through bumpy sections, but once you drink some of the water on the way up the mountain that is usually more than enough to make it so it doesn't bounce much at all. i attach a retractable badge holder (like one you would use to attach a pass card to your belt in an office building) and just attach that right next to the magnet so you can just let go of the tube once done drinking and it will go right back to the magnet (sometimes it ends up on the magnet, sometimes not but either way it doesn't move very far away from that spot while riding)

I’ve tried loads of these and each has pros and cons. Fit is key. I found that an I.D. Lanyard can manage the hose/ bite valve. I empty and freeze the bladder between uses. Also, a puffy envelope ( like bubble wrap) will keep the bladder and water insulated during use. I hope this helps. Ride on.

I run an Osprey talon 6. Had it for about 3 yrs now. Showing some signs of age, but still going strong. Summers here in Australia are just too hot for full packs. So a hip pack is perfect. I like the Evoc Hip pack pro 3L, it would be the perfect replacement for my ageing Talon.

I run the dakine hot laps. I'm a big fan of water bottle storage on the pack, don't like bladders to much. So far no issues with the pack, only used it one season so far. I'm at the opposite side of the spectrum. My bag is almost max out but mine is to small. Hopefully I'll lose some weight during the season

I have the opposite problem with my 36" belly - I'm at the near end of the belt adjustment range! The Pro is my first belt pack, and I'm still deciding if I like it or not, less than 10 rides with it so far. Still working on deciding on just where to place it, tightness and how it sits on pant's zippers and fasteners (I'm winter riding now so It's lots of layers ). The linked zippers is really easy to open close on rides as the 'handle' is easy to reach while riding and zip up the pack on the fly.

Good review, I have been thinking about going back to a hip pack. I had one when I first got into Mtn biking in the early 90's. One tip for you on cleaning your water bladder: Hot water and a couple Efferdent denture cleaning tablets. Add more for larger sized bladders and let them sit overnight, then rinse in the morning.
@johnnydoe66
@johnnydoe66 3 жыл бұрын
@@dustybettymtb Oh, after filling the bladder, run some through the drinking tube every 30 or so minutes to help freshen up it also. I usually do it three to four times before I go to bed, then rinse everything in the morning.

I've been thinking about a hip pack... some day I'll be able to go into stores to try one. I'm not sure about carrying a pump in one across your back. Think about where it is in relation to your spine should you do an OTB and land on the pack.

I have 2 water bottles on my bike and for a 2 to 3 hour ride in summer it's just about enough but I still have to ration on the way back. So looking for a bladder system, but a large back pack would make me sweat. Would rather they allowed 2 or maybe 2.5l but I guess then why bother buying their hydration backpacks

So when do you go with a hip pack and when with a backpack?
@dustybettymtb
@dustybettymtb 2 жыл бұрын
For me, it just has to do with capacity. If I don't need a ton of space for my ride, I'll take the hit pack because it covers less of my back. It's less sweaty and more comfortable having the weight down low. If I'm going on a longer half or full day ride and I need more capacity for water food etc, that's when I reach for my backpack.
