Review: Frigidaire EFIC235 Countertop Ice Machine

This is a review of the Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ Countertop Crunchy Chewable Nugget Ice Maker. We purchased it last week on the coldest day of the year! This ice machine produces the "Sonic Ice" that everyone loves to chew on, and does not require any special plumbing for installation. It's great for my small kitchen, since I cannot let an entire cabinet go to an under-the-counter device. (This is also about is 1/3 of the price of one of the larger models I could get at a big box hardware store.) The amount of ice it produces (44 lbs per day) is plenty for my family.

This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact kzfaq.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

@@ACBMemphis when I saw the Styrofoam was gone and everything was just tossed back in the box I felt like for $280 I should be getting a new one. Amazon is good about not reselling returns as new so I ordered from them.

This product is now out of stock everywhere. I ordered in Feb 20th from Amazon supposed to get on the March 19th. Is there something wrong that they stopped making it or is it so good that they are all out, do you know anything?

@@davidst4896 Not sure. Mine is still working great, not sure why they are so popular now. I got it because that ice was something I missed from the office, after a year of working at home.

Your fridge can work in a tight space because the heat is dissipated out the bottom. I like the idea of the appliance garage. We have the opal and love the nugget ice.

Well I will be trying mine tonight Walmart had 2 at same price as Amazon. The first 2 water fills will be thrown out JIC of any factory/manufacturing debris or oils. Your countertop appliance garage would benefit from a 12V 120MM or 200MM computer exhaust fan on the right side, in alignment with this units fan.

Hubby bought one for me but the machine takes forever to make enough ice for a beverage. I'm thinking about returning it. How long does your machine take to make a cup of ice??

I purchased mine 5 months ago and it has been great (up until yesterday). Now, I’m getting ice full light when it’s empty. I use ro water and I went a little long on descaling. Last night I descaled but it still says ice full and won’t kick in the compressor. If I hold down the ice making button for several seconds, it bypasses and makes some ice, but after an hour or so I have to repeat. I know sending it in would cost a lot so I’ll stick with this for a while, then decide what to do. Anybody else dealing with this. Makes great ice though.

Your refrigerator exhausts hot air out the front bottom. ALL compressors work by moving heat away from an area to get cold. Why your AC unit is located outside, because for it to work it has to exhaust hot air.

It has a condenser which means it needs to dissipate heat. When the manual says a minimum clearance of 6" it means with no obstruction on any side of the machine that either expels air or draws it in...you can never under any circumstance run a unit that dissipates heat in an enclosed area as it will over heat and it if has no safety shut off it will burn it up! That is why your air condition condenser is "outside"!

I would like to add for anyone watching that I purchased 3 of these machines and all 3 have broken down within just a few months. I tried to return it and I encountered the most horrible customer service I have ever dealt with in my life. I should've done my homework before purchasing because so many others have encountered the same problem. Then they want you to ship the unit back to them at your own expense and the unit is pretty heavy. Especially if you're shipping multiple units. For the price of this machine I say pass and look for a better one by a company that stands behind it's products.

I have 1 and it also started acting up after about 2 months. I was about to send mine back until I decided to deep clean mine. 1 ran the ice maker descaler 2 times. A warm soapy water solution 2 times. Wiped the inside out. Ran warm water thru it using the clean cycles. Drained it and filled up the reservoir. Turned it back on and it has worked fine ever since. I clean mine every 2 to 3 months. The manuel does not give detailed instructions on how to clean and maintain the machine. I guess once they get turned of the bad reviews and returned units they will add detailed cleaning instructions!!

After you changed location, did you have a full bin of ice in the morning or did the machine shut off as it did in the appliance garage. I am wondering if this is a device that could run constantly so that I could have a continuous supply of ice. I've owned an inexpensive, countertop ice maker that never filled up because the ice would melt faster than it was made. I never had more than one full glass of ice at any given time.

Yes we just bought-one. Day one and it started making weird screaming noises and not not making any ice. I think it’s a refurbished one. Spent $400.00 on Amazon. Gonna have to return it

I love my Opal Ice Maker from GE. The biggest difference I see is the Frigidaire has a lot of plastic on the main machine where the Opal is all stainless steel. The reservoir is plastic. The noise lessens after a while and you do not hear it. I do wish that the Opal made more ice, one full bucket is not as much as I would hope, but it does continually make ice which is helpful. Goes great with the drinkworks machine.

It will only last you about 1 year. Our Opal was purchased last August, and quit working this week. Piece of shite for 600 bucks!!!!!

@@lisaperduk1585 I'm reaching 1 year now. I did buy the extended warranty as I heard issues can come up, but I'm hoping using distilled water, filters and cleaning it regularly are going to stave off some issues.

Size question - would you say the size of nuggets it produces is the exact same size of sonic ice pellets, or larger/smaller?

It might be very slightly larger.. A more noticeable difference than size from Sonic ice is it is a little "tougher" - more of a solid cube. However, in my opinion once you put it in a drink and it melts a little it becomes crunchable just like the Sonic ice..

Loved the ice but my fridgedaire ice machine started making progressively louder noises at 2 weeks and quit entirely on week 3. Luckily I was able to return mine to Walmart for a full refund.

I have had mine for about two weeks. It started making a god awful loud noise. It is not the normal noise from the water pumping or the fan. I am hoping I can get it fixed because I love the ice!

Mine has made some occasional loud squeaking noises like something inside is struggling, but they usually stop within 30 seconds or so... Thanks for watching!

Finally a video i bought mine and have had issues it makes ice then seconds or up to a minute later it starts saying add water again even though my water tank is full. I’ve drained the tubes in the back and still continue to get the same issue. I’ve felt like throwing the ice machine out the window because it makes a hand full of ice then shoots the add water message 😣

I just plugged my machine in, but the power light keeps flashing and the ice light will not come on. No ice after 2 hours. What do you suggest? I’ve tried unplugging it, etc.

Sounds like it might be broken. Just checked mine and the power light is on steady. I usually have to press the "ice" button to get it started.

Mine just stopped working out of the blue right at a year. It was always very noisy and we had to always just have it at the sink because it leaked so much water

Thanks for the video!! Just got mine as a Xmas gift.. The manual is crap!! I was having some of the same issues and was wondering if it was broken because the ice melted over night. My power light still flashes when I stop the ice making process, did you figure out why it does that and is yours still doing it?

Thanks for watching! It still does that, but only rarely... About every month, I do a thorough draining and cleaning. During that process I run some vinegar solution through the machine and dispose of several batches of ice. It seems like when that happens, it's more likely to flash, but in general we just keep filling it with water, using the ice, and it works.

Does anyone have issues with the melting ice leaking out the front of the ice machine? I got rid of the original water catcher it came with cause it didn’t do much. But it soaks my countertop with leaking water

Just cut a small hole on the side of the cabinet and put a small vent there.

You could of cut out a duct on the side of the cabinet. So the fan could breath.

Not sure, I wish the instruction manual was clearer. What we do is thoroughly drain and clean the entire box every few weeks which involves scrubbing the insides and running several loads of vinegar through. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yes still working - we use it every day. However, it has started to leak a little more. A couple of months ago we had to replace the included drip tray with a deeper tray from Ikea to prevent it from overflowing. But the machine still functions.. Thanks for watching!

We bought ours in February, still works today, however it is much louder and seems to work a little harder. We use r/o water to fill and clean at least once a month.

your refrigerator isn't in an enclosed closet. If you did that, you'd have the same problem. I don't think the small space is the issue, it's that you have no way to vent the hot air from the closet.

I reviewed this on my channel I’ve owned 2 units and the second on I’ve had it 2 months and both machines have had the same issue! This thing literally exploded and the top popped off of the machine 😭😭😭😭😡 I suggest anyone that purchases this keep the box and receipt! I give any one of these things 3 months max!

That is terrible! I saw your video where ice buildup broke the top plastic part. I did have one incident where the inner light was flashing and I had to power it off and back on to make it stop, but other than that, mine is still running so far no problem... If it breaks I will come back and update this video... Thanks for watching!

@@ACBMemphis I never had a blue light flash but there needs to be some kind of warning when the ice does that or a safety auto shut off feature this thing popped off and was stuck under my cabinet. I was so scared that the whole cabinet would fall when I moved the ice machine 😭

@@ACBMemphis Mine might be missing that cap or something. When I put water in the reservoir, and then turn it over, it makes a huge mess spilling water everywhere. I wanted to see someone refilling the water and then putting the top on without it making that mess.

LOVE IT, BUT IT LEAKS A TON OF WATER. I HAD TO PUT IT ON A HALF SHEET PAN AND SOAK UP ALL OF THE WATER. AND IT WHINES LIKE A BANSHEE. I LIKE IT, BUT IT SUCKS.
