I was one of the original backers for the project in 2015 on Kickstarter - I didn't receive the unit until just about 4 years later on Jan 2019. After endless updates and thorough real-life use, here are my thoughts after using it for 6 months. There are some decent things about it, but there are some definite shortcomings to the Meater line by Apption Labs.
If you're set on getting the Meater or Meater Block and want to buy the new Meater+, maybe they fixed the connectivity issues - Check that out here: amzn.to/30XottB
If you want something half the price of the Meater Block and better performance - Try the ThermoPro: amzn.to/2LKSnh6
...and get a case for it to protect your investment: amzn.to/2LKSnh6
I read all the comments, so please ask whatever comes to mind or give suggestions for future reviews.

I’ve been smoking for 20 years, and this is the best set of probes I’ve even owned. Love them, worth every penny. I cooked four pork tenderloins just tonight, probed them all independently, moved them around because of different hot spots on the grill so they all finished within an minute of each other. Perfect every time. Don’t hate them for the past, rate them on the present.

@@gieselman I ended up buying the MEATER block and it has been great. The probes will last for an entire brisket cook (mine was 14-15 hours). If you do buy one just be careful when cleaning them not to soak them in water. I clean mine with wet paper towel/dish soap but had a friend who got one ruined because his mother in law soaked it without realizing what she was doing.

I appreciate your thoughtful review. I just received the block as a gift and tested it recently. I had several large pieces of boneless short ribs and used 2 probes just to be able to get more than 1 data point. I also was controlling the smoker with a Thermoworks Signals and Billows so actually got comparison performance information of the ambient side of the probes. Directly from the fridge, both probes read 37d. Within a few minutes of putting the meat in the smoker I had a 5d difference between them that lasted the entire cook. 3 hrs in Meater was showing 185 and 190 respectively which in my experience seemed way to hot that soon. I used my thermapen to verify and as expected, the meat was only 159-165 depending where I probed. It was time to wrap so I removed the probes for the remainder. The ambient side of the probes was reading in the mid 240s which did compare well to my Signals at 250. Out of curiosity I heated some water, dropped in all 4 Meater probes and the thermapen. Within 30s all probes were within a degree at 173. As another commenter suggested, there might be some type of heat transfer occurring down the probe itself. I'm going to try inserting the probes beyond the insertion line to all the way to the black end to see if that improves accuracy by insulating more of the probe.

Thanks for the feedback - I don't think this product is for people who smoke. It constantly was telling me that my meat was "burnt" because I was doing 190 internal temp on my brisket. That and the radios are just too weak for any kind of quality smoker in my opinion.

I got in on the "Kick Start" "Backer" deal. I paid about $200 and had to wait around 2+ years. My first cook, I had a probe issue. I contacted customer service and since I was a Backer and waited so long, they sent me a single probe, along with the replacement. I have to leave the block near the grill, but it works pretty good.

Prospective customer here: I'm glad you gave an honest 2 cents. Instead of most "consumers" I look for the reasons I WOULDN'T want to buy something. Not like I go in negatively, but I want to see the issues people have with a product. As a straight up thermometer, I've heard that it's not the most accurate and I wonder if that's due in part to them using tech that's designed to pull temps on both ends of the unit- What I mean is that if your grill is 450 degrees, then the internal thermometer could be "soaking" heat from the other end of the probe. Also, having the probe read ambient is super handy (and clever), but with the amount of moisture released by meat during a cook (or when you have to wrap) I wonder if the accuracy is again thrown off due to the environment. I keep my "grate" probe near my food, but never adjacent as I want to know what the air temp is, not the radiant temp right next to the meat where it could be cooler. I think I'll look for a product centered around accuracy and doesn't give "warnings" for damaging an expensive (and it IS expensive) product during normal use. The probes should be able to withstand temps well over any normal cooking scenario to give users a good buffer. This is also common practice for most businesses where they want to ensure reliability.. Obviously being a tech company, it seems they focused primarily on the app development, not the hardware. If a flare-up hits your probe, it's all of a sudden baking in a flash of 900f+ heat and if that's what it takes to permanently damage it, I won't feel good about dropping 250 dollars on the risk. Glad you took the dive for everyone else. Thanks
@DirtandFire
@DirtandFire 4 жыл бұрын
Mobius_1 thanks for the comment, I agree whole heartedly and as much as I wanted this product to be the answer to everything I wanted in a thermometer, it just isn’t. The accuracy is one thing, not THAT big of a deal to be a couple degrees off. When I was using it, the warnings when you’re cooking a low and slow brisket are absurd, it says that your meat is “overcooked” when you haven’t even hit target temps. It tells you you’re damaging the product and so on. It’s not really designed for anything besides casual grilling, which anyone could handle with any $10 pen thermometer. The people who are attracted to this product are doing long cooks that they don’t want to have to open up and check temps that often.

Place it in top first, then slide the bottom in. Personally I have Thermopens, Mavericks, BBQ Gurus and I think this really has a place, I've never found the perfect tool yet. You can't take the knowledge out of the long BBQ cooks and it can't account for stalls, thickness and fat%, I think that's fair enough. If you aren't getting a good connection then I can understand the issue but if you do then you get perfect roast chicken, slow cooked lamb shoulder as well as pulled pork on the smoker. It definitely isn't a master of BBQ but it doesn't pretend to be, it's a great bbq tool though (if you get a signal) and it can change many people oven/pan cooking. Thanks for the review.

I've had one for a few weeks. Done brisket 3 times and pork butt once. All absolutely spot on. I'd only use it for larger cuts of meat. You need to push it in at least to the line on the prope so it's pointless for a steak imo. Works great on larger cuts though

I get being salty it took a while, but I knew where this was going after saying you wrote it off as a loss and didn’t expect to even get it, you didn’t like the packaging it arrived in, you don’t understand the design choices, why did you even back it if you say it’s a boutique product you can use a $10 thermometer just as well? Other then matching exactly what you think they should do what could they have possibly done to get a good review from you personally? I’m legitimately curious because critically analyzing your review versus the other reviews in the comments, I don’t see any way you’d have given this a good review. Honestly have you ever researched and built something that has to withstand extreme heat and was able to connect to a Bluetooth or wireless device? If so, how long did that take you? Victor D thanks victor! I’m sure it’s good for some applications, like open pan cooking, rotisserie, things that don’t have a lot of interference from being inside an oven like environment. Which in the demo videos from apption, they totally show it inside of regular ovens, bbqs, all kinds of places, they dropped connection very often in a regular Weber kettle bbq with the block less than 5 feet away in a window. They’d also drop in my oven inside my house with the block 3 feet away on the counter. The connection was very weak.

I have a FireBoard 2 Drive which I adore. I'm still considering purchasing a Meater+ or this just for when I'm using something like a Weber Kettle that doesn't have probe ports, because I hate pinching wires and fucking with the lid seal by having the wire there. Your review makes me lean toward the Meater+, which is a single probe unit. The only reason I'd consider the block is that I could monitor the temps over 4G if I went to the store or something, but it's not like if something was overheating I'd be at home to do something about it as the Meater can't control a blower fan like the FireBoard Drive can, so maybe that's not such a big loss. FWIW I've seen a review of the Meater+ where a guy was maintaining connection through a cinderblock garage with a roof on it.

It lasts that long from what I've seen, what doesn't last is the connection, during most cooks on my Yoder YS640, it'll lose connection 50+ times during an 8 hour cook. Im very happy with the results on mine (use it mainly for the rotisserie). I also have a 4 probe wifi Inkbird and that cost there about to £100. Also, there's nothing to "get over" and there aren't any excuses for a company to take a product from what they claimed was a working prototype to delivery in 4 years. That's slower than snail's pace. Based on that alone I wouldn't trust them to deliver on anything else they say they will.

LOL, a meat temperature probe should need a techie to use it? It measures the temperature of meat cooking and that's all it does. You insert it into the meat and open the app. I'll go so far to say, after the initial setup, you shouldn't ever have to mess with anything, including the BT pairing process. This product absolutely should be useable by some of the least techie people out there. I've been on computers since the late 70's and am as techie as you can get. There's no way in hell if I wanted a wireless probe I'd want something that required me to do a bunch of crap to get it working.

It's convenient, the thing I don't get is that it also has a power port and it doesn't even charge the batteries? Wouldn't it have been better to have a replaceable pack that recharges?

This is made for big roasts and smokers. Not individual steaks. If you can’t cook, we’ll go out to eat. This is a great tool for people who know how to cook. Dumb review. 👎🏼

Nonsense. It's definitely also meant for individual steaks.

$100 for a single probe that can’t be recharged. When it dies spend another $100. Immediate NO!

When you place them back in the block for storage the block charges them. So they are always fully charged and ready to go when you pull them out to use.

It feels like your intro took 4 years also 🤣 You need to take some commercial actings classes on how to do non-mono tone evaluations. I couldn't take it and was not able to stay watching. I wanted to stick one of the probes through my head to end the pain of bordom. So my evalution is neither one of you work properly!! No hard feelings just an observation..
