This is a review of the Inside Ride e-Motion bicycle rollers.
I bought them from www.1upusa.com/ because I couldn't find a better price and they had free shipping. They took 4 weeks to arrive (back in November of 2007).
The good is:
1. I love riding on them.
2. I can alternate standing and sitting to alleviate butt pain.
3. They feel very much like real riding even while standing.
4. Time goes by much faster than on other exercise equipment.
5. They come fully assembled, which is terrific.
6. They are very easy to adjust.
The bad is:
1. My mountain bike wheelbase was slightly too long to use on these. When standing, the bike tended to lurch forward slightly.
2. Slightly disappointed in how loud they are but different tires might help that.
Some things I don't mention in the video:
1. The bumpers are nice for helping prevent riding off the sides.
2. Watching hockey can be deadly if you tend to go back and forth with the action! :-)
Here are some other videos on rollers you might want to check out!
This guy is incredible on rollers:

These rollers look awesome for Mountain Bikers:

Brad, Thanks for posting this-we'd never seriously considered rollers but have been convinced to give them a try when we next update equipment. Scott

This is the most useful video I've ever seen on KZfaq. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I think you've convinced me to get this. I wish it wasn't so expensive!

I got them at the end of October. I still like riding them better than anything else I've had, but if given the choice, I always opt for outside - whether it's XC skiing or studded mountain biking. I do love them, but I have to confess, what might be even more motivational is I started creating DVD's with music video's on them and watch them while riding. That makes the time go by much faster. But still, these have the best feel of anything else I've ridden period.

This is a very well done and accurate review of the e-motion rollers. I use them with my PowerCranks and it is the ultimate unconscious pedal stroke, core balance exercise I have come up with. Joe

Great review. I've been looking at these rollers for about a week now, and your video, even more so than anything else I've seen, has convinced me this is what I want. I am a MTN bike racer here in Wisconsin, but have a cross bike that I use like a road bike most the summer. I remember seeing on the company website that most mountain bikes would not work due to the wheel span. Anyway, Thanks for such a great review...No more spin class for me!

The actual manufacturer contacted me and told me they thought my tires were making a lot of noise and recommended some tires too. Some people thought I was using cyclocross tires, which I was NOT. Thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely switch to those tires... Indoor riding season's coming right up. :-(

Cool! I still love them and they're still working perfectly. I too am using my cyclocross bike with road tires on it. I found boredom to be the biggest issue and either creating music videos or just youtube playlists of music videos helps a lot. I have another video on those. Good luck racing!

Hi Ben loved this vid you are full of confidence and were able to just about everything on the rollers within a short time. Just got new rollers and was up in about 10 mins. However, still trying to relax grip and who knows with some practice even reach for a drink lol. Love the idea of rollers especially in bad weather. On wards and upwards. Gerry

They were much easier to ride on my mountain bike which is what I started on. Also, I think when you ride skinny logs and things in the woods, these don't seem bad. And you'll be happy to know, my rollers are still working great - rode for an hour on 'em last night b/c it was too cold to run or bike outside.

Great video infotainment! I got rollers to train for an upcoming ride and had to curb a shopaholic urge to get e-motion rollers after watching your video! Luckily a financial reality check helped dampen my enthusiasm, plus some further research. But I mention your video in my cycling club's blog so I thought I'd write to say hi and tell you to check out the Beach Cities Cycling Club blog if you'd like to see the link to your video. Happy riding!

Thanks! The actual manufacturer of the rollers watched this video and recommended using: Performance Forte' Pro DC 700x23c tires. Someone else recommended using: Continental Ultra Sport Home Trainer Clincher I'm not sure which I'm going to try, but I'm going to try one. I don't have a road bike but do have road and cross wheels and ride the cross wheels/tires pretty much 100% of the time outdoors, so if the Conti's are dedicated indoor tires, that doesn't bother me.

So, I'm looking at a weather forecast with several days of steady rain. Ordinarily I wouldn't even think about using an indoor trainer but I am today. I would love to have access to this roller trainer but I won't ever be in a position to buy one new, and my understanding is that the likelihood of finding one at a yard sale is nil. I'll just cross my fingers and wish... Great review! Thank you. (BTW, my TotalGym has a cyclo-trainer attachment for warming up. I can only stand it for about 5 minutes.)

Apparently the reason for the noise on the trainer and rollers is due to your tiers. Knobby tires make more noise than smooth road bike tires. I ordered a trainer. Hopefully it won't be very loud. My tires aren't very knobby. So that should help.

You mean, you couldn't get so you could ride them? I guess the key is to just go for it. Don't be afraid to fall off, keep pedaling till you do fall off, but most of all, you really have to keep your upper body still it seems. Even a little motion like shifting gears can throw you off. And the number 1 thing is to have something to hold on to and just keep practicing while holding on, then let go a little, if you teeter, grab back on, but try to keep pedaling. You need speed to stay up.

@JoeOxfordCT Lemond has a pretty cool new trainer out - you remove your rear wheel and put the bike on a simulated rear wheel, supposed to feel just like road biking. maybe not the challenge of rollers, but ... interesting little machine.

@JoeOxfordCT If I put the resistance up high and stand, the rear wheel slips so when I stand, I need to have the resistance fairly low. I don't know if newer or stickier tires would help this or not.
@JosephDowski
@JosephDowski 14 жыл бұрын
@bradtube1 - Well that sounds to me like a lot of resistance combined with maybe having your center of gravity too far forward which is causing the rear wheel to slip.... yes, no ? Also, it's now been a year since you posted up this video. What are your feelings now about the E-Motions ? Pros, Cons, what you would change if you could, etc. Thanks by the way, great video !

@rikoshea5234 I don't think you'll fall off, but your back tire will probably slip/lose traction and be really annoying. Also, if you have your front wheel positioned slightly behind (like fractions of an inch) behind the front roller and if you put a ton of weight on your front bars, your wheel could slide off the back off the front roller, maybe not all the way off the back because of the safety bar, but ... the big problem is loosing traction on the rear wheel.

I really don't know. I have a cyclocross bike and do 100% of my outdoor riding on it with cyclocross tires on it. On the trainer, I put on road tires. In two years of trainer riding (not really all that much riding), these tires have become quite shiny and perfectly smooth - no tread left at all. So - I do think they wear out your tires, but if you had a set you only used on the trainer, like I do, you'll get at least a couple years out of them.

Brad, first off great review, I have a few questions. I'm thinking about taking the plunge and getting either a high quality trainer or the E-motion rollers. My primary concern is tire wear (I'll ONLY be riding my road bike on the rollers). Have you noticed premature wearing on your tires? having a spare wheelset is not an option since I want to train with power and I use a PowerTap wheelset (and can't afford to throw down another grand for a training Powertap)

yea try just normal rollers they are even harder but still fun. the sound from it is not that bad, fun to see how loud it can get.
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 14 жыл бұрын
@JoeOxfordCT well... not even a lot of resistance makes them slip. yes, you can stand with your weight less forward, but it doesn't feel natural. Maybe you could elevate the front wheel slightly and stand and not slip. my thoughts? well, I wish I could use my mountain bike on them but the wheelbase is too long. i really had fun on them initially, just trying to balance and stuff, but once you get comfortable on them, they are every bit as boring as any other trainer.

I'm pretty sure the issue with this roller set picking up tire rubber has to do with the small diameter drum they used for the front tire. This causes a high-flex area in the contact patch. Many other rollers will use larger-diam drums up front to improve this, or get a really slick tire that you can get to a higher pressure. After you've plunked down $800 for this rig, you can afford a spare front wheelset eh?

Hi Brad, I am considering laying out for these but they're alot of money. I currently have a set of roller with a mag resistance unit that I'm very comforable with but I can't really realistically mimic the standing climbing position. Is there enough resistance with the E-Motion rollers to get a good standing climbing workout ? I saw the one clip of you standing at max resistance. Boy did your bike look like it was flexing alot....

Is it possible to sprint really hard on these roller? Elite also produce a set of e-motion rollers (without the rear wheel bumpers). The video for them demonstrates a very weak/wimpy looking sprint.

I know - I should get a commission but I don't! :-( Haven't bought new tires. I ride my mountain bike 99.9% of the time outdoors, put cyclocross tires on my cyclocross bike for the summer and then never ride it, then put the road tires back on for the winter when I ride the rollers. My road tires are still sort of loud and they're getting real shiny/completely smooth. I started making KZfaq Playlists and watch music vids with a cable from my PC to TV. Helps with the boredom.
