Hi, just got a couple of Minimed Mio Advance from my clinic yesterday. Just watched your video and found it really helpful for inserting device for first time. Also, so cool to find out that if I catch my tubing, it's likely that the whole canula will not be ripped out of my stomach (which does hurt!). I did watch the official video but found yours really user friendly. Thank you.

One thing they could do with the instructions is something the automotive industry does. They put a single page in the box with either a QR code or text link to the website with the actual instructions. This does 2 things, it reduces the paper needed per box and allows changes to the instructions to be made without having the outdated instructions still in boxes on the shelf somewhere.

That's would be a great idea, but I'm sure its somehow a FDA requirement to print the material being a prescription medical supply. Maybe develop package inserts based on geography. Maybe North/South America would be a region to include French, Spanish, English, etc

@@thatdiabetesguy9652 From what I have read, the full instructions aren't 100% necessary for all devices (granted I didn't read the multitude of pages for every case). I think it would be worth it to either recheck current regulations or lobby congress to allow 21st century technology solutions to the label requirements. I get several boxes of these every year (for 2 decades) and I am pretty sure I no longer require directions in every box.

Great to hear! I've heard from my patients that were on the original Mio, the local DME supply company would utilize the rest of their stock and automatically switched to Mio advance. Original Mio's are no longer in production.

I prefer the MiniMed Mio Advance over the original MiniMed Mio. Like yourself, I think that Medtronic/MiniMed have done a good job here. Also, like yourself, I do believe that Medtronic/MiniMed provide us with a heck of lot of 'waste paper'. I say 'waste paper' as once I've read the instructions/information sheet I don't refer to them again. The good thing is we have a recycling bin that gets picked up every week over here in the UK ... when the refuse collection service(s) aren't on strike, as they are right now. 😉 (I also remove the insertion needle, which I dispose of in a normal sharps container, and recycle the plastic bits.)

This week I had two fall completely out of my body when going from a sitting position to an upright position. It hurt! The pump fell out of my pocket & was so heavy, it pulled them right out. 2 wasted. I'm glad you had a better experience.
@thatdiabetesguy9652

Oh no! That sucks and happens to the best of us. One tip is to wrap a small coil of tubing next to the infusion set insertion site and tape tape the coil down (Tegederm or IV3000). So when you pump fall out or gets caught on anything, it will pull at the coil of excess pump tubing/tape before it pulls at the infusion insertion site. Thanks for sharing your recent incident.

Thank you. Great review. I watched it just before inserting my first Mio Advanced. Another great feature is that there is no "top side/bottom side on the tubing connector. My other set of choic is the Silluette, and as much as I like them, I often fumble connecting because I have the connector flipped over. The Mio Advance elimiates that problem.

Wait, you're not supposed to just force the connector to cooperate?! Kidding aside, that's an awesome point!

I kept the original Mio away from my skin a tiny bit before squeezing it. If I touched my skin with the unit, more often than not I would get a bent cannula. With this one, the adhesive ring is placed on before the cannula is injected. I watched you pushing the inserted several times and I noticed your foam skin depressed a little. I sure hope this is not going to cause failed infusers for me. I only get so many. The size is ridiculous; the packaging is larger than it needs to be. The connector is protected by a choking hazard piece and there are no warnings about this. A lot of insulin is used in the 43 inch tubing. I think there may be problems from overheating of the tubing insulin (that which we receive) this summer. 23 inches is too short. The 32 inch size was about perfect, which is probably why it's not available. I hope mine do not "quick release" in the middle of the night. I do the coil thing and I also use 3M paper tape. Not happy with this at all. I'm T1D x 54 years and having to deal with another bad design from Medtronics is not my cup of tea.

Thanks Mary for your feedback. You bring up a significant point that not every diabetes technology is a perfect fit for everyone. Obviously, with your experience, you have found out what works for you. As for others who haven't had many years utilizing various technologies, I would suggest reaching out to your local diabetes educator/provider, call a local clinical pump rep, or ask your medical supply company to see if you could get a few samples of various infusion sets to see which design works best for your lifestyle. If you utilize taping an extra loop of tubing to your skin before the infusion set, the disconnect feature should not be an issue. If anyone prone to tossing and turning during the middle of the night (really anyone who wears an infusion set), I would consider securing an extra loop of tubing tapped against your skin to be the primary point of resistance if the tubing gets excessively pulled on.

As someone who is FOREVER snagging my line I'm really interested in how this disconnection works. I only started using my medtronic 640G again today after not doing too well on a patch pump and I'm waiting to be upgraded to the Minimed 780G with the predictive algorithms, so thanks for the supplementary part of the vid. 👍

Great video, and especially for the helpful tip at the end. While I rarely rip mine out, this is very comforting to know. I'm sure there is some ridiculous FDA rule that won't allow them to feature this in their advertisements. I am currently trying to use up all my old infusion sets. After trying a mio advance, I was sold 100%. The only thing I don't like is there is no intermediate tubing length of 32" - I wonder why. I like to have a little extra working line, but 43" is just too long. I may have to just live with the longer ones until they offer a mid length.

Haven't these been around for years? I use the SureT infusion sets. I used other Medtronic infusion sets but SureT is my favorite. You just stick it in manually. I like it because you can take it out, clean it off and replace it if you need to. I believe they might be the cheapest one.

Hi, thanks for the review. I received these today as a surprise as we were previously told not to expect them automatically. Nice insertion and easy to use, however, the waste of plastic and paper is criminal! I also think that these are a lot bulkier to keep in a handbag or travel abroad with, but that may just be my opinion.

I use 3M paper tape to avoid pulling on my infusion set, works great, and the tape comes off easily and doesn't irritate my skin. Medtronic has a 7-day infusion set, testing only in select European countries. Order my new sets, haven't received them as of this date.

Thanks for sharing Paul! I saw the new Medtronic infusion sets at ADA scientific meeting in 2019 and thought it was an interesting concept. All they did was added a small filter in the beginning of the tubing connecter that filters out insulin "impurities" that reduce site inflammation that causes delayed insulin absorption. To be honest, I'm a little skeptical of the insulin absorption data. When I asked the design engineer he couldn't elaborate what "insulin impurities" that was being filtered out. I would be interested in reviewing the product if you would be gracious enough to share a couple when you get them. I could send you replacement infusion sets to last you a few weeks and pay for any shipping too. Thanks for sharing your tips and watching the video!

Since I first started using my first Medtronic pump 10 years ago, I always keep my infusion set in for 7 days and I reuse my reservoir 3 times. My HgbA1C is 5.9 so I don't think it is a problem. I use the SureT infusion set so I don't know if that makes a difference.

@@thatdiabetesguy9652 could the impurities be what I call tubing dust that can cause cancer? Just a thought.

Thanks for the video! My pump experience has been exclusively with the Mini Med Bio Advance and I basically like it. I've recently been sent a box of the former Mini Med Mio with the colored all-in-one pods which I believe were the standard before the MMM Advance. In just the past week I've had them malfunction twice already - inserted but my sugars were uncommonly high because I wasn't receiving the insulin. Sure enough when I removed the set the cannula was bent. Is this a problem others have experienced? Do I just need to practice? Thanks. Apparently there has been some issue with the manufacturer and that is what caused me to receive boxes of the older supplies.

Yes, it happens quite often to me. The old Mios, in my opinion, are very unreliable in fitting and I have had them fail three times in a row, seriously affecting my blood sugars. I am hoping that the new Advance will help. It certainly fits easily. However, I found it less easy to remove for exercise and in fact it came out, wasting the cannula. Luckily in the UK these are free so no cost to me, but I hate the waste. And the hassle. I have had two pumps. To me, the Medtronic design is a great pump let down by a very unsatisfactory insertion process (here's hoping for the Advance!). It was my first pump (well actually i used some experiemntal pumps in the 1980s but my first pump since then). Eventually I changed to another pump - by Accu-Check. This was because of the number of failed insertions I was getting, which really hit my results. The Accu-Check was awesome in insertion but the pump itself was considerably less good. So I returned to the Mio. Things had not moved on - until the Advantage, but I am still happy to have returned. But come on guys, if one of you (Accu-check) can deliver insulin safely and reliably, why not Medtronic? So a lot hangs on the Advantage for me. Just in closing (first time on the site - thanks for the review!) this week marked my 50th anniversary on insulin. I entered hospital on 11 Jan 1972, which itself was the 50th anniversary of the world's first insulin injection. My first injection, aged 17, was on 12th January 1972, with today being the 16th January 2022, so I have just entered the cadre of patients who have benefited from insulin therapy for more than half its life. it has kept me alive and healthy and I am so very, very grateful. Good luck to all of you - it can work out!
