Episode #205: Planet Of The Apes I
Jon reviews the original five films in 20th Century Fox's long-running "Planet Of The Apes" franchise: the 1968 original starring Charlton Heston; its bizarre and stupid follow-up, "Beneath The Planet Of The Apes"; the quirky sci-fi time travel story, "Escape From The Planet Of The Apes"; the pseudo-futuristic rebellion-focused film, "Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes"; and the final entry in Caesar's story - "Battle For The Planet Of The Apes".

Tonight's Films:
• Planet Of The Apes (1968) - Still remarkable, a true sci-fi milestone, 9/10.
• Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970) - A pointless repackage of its superior predecessor, 4/10.
• Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971) - Amusing and thought-provoking picture, 8/10.
• Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972) - A worthy entry with meaningful themes, 6/10.
• Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) - Isn't interesting or necessary enough for non-fans, 5/10.

I dunno... The first half of Beneath may be a retread of the original, but the second half is truly visionary. Escape, on the other hand, is a perfect balance of drama, satire and commentary. In fact, I'm gonna say the first three are more or less a perfect trilogy. There may be flaws in the middle section, but otherwise they're remarkably consistent on a thematic and story level.

Beneath was always my favorite because we actually explore and see the ruined planet! It is quite a journey. The first one is more of a survival. It also contains the most ballsy badass ending in the history of the cinematography. Where else can you see heros killed at the end and destroy the entire planet just not let the enemy have it. :=)

I love how slowly the forbidden zone and its occupants are revealed to the viewer. You can't help, but wonder about it. And even when you get to see the occupants there is still more to explore as far as who they are and their customs. Not to mention that the mystery forbidden zone started from the first movie.

@@mimimalignant Exactly! They actually managed to make a sequel that makes sense and the huge post-apocalyptic world feels huge. I was even more impressed when I learned about the small budget it was given. I always thought it had way bigger budget than the first movie. The atmosphere is also something special. So grimm and dark. It scared the s*it out of me when I was kid. People say some effects suck, especially the fire. That might be true but I always thought it added certain surreal charm and confusion to the movie.

@@kkarx yeah, it all depends on what you are requiring from a movie. I was kept in suspense, captivated, entertained and got to explore a fantasy world. The acting was good if not great. For me it is a very good movie.

Planet of the Apes (2001): Completely unnecessary remake. None of the characters are interesting and the ending makes no sense whatsoever. The only redeeming qualities about this film is the ape makeup and Tim Roth's awkward performance that warrants a chuckle once in a while. 3/10.

I agree with you, Garrick, my thoughts exactly. I wish that the dreadful 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes" should have NEVER been made in the first place. What a waste of talent and cinematic energy.

Oh I agree. I once Truly believed in Hollywood "once upon a time" until they took The shortcut...let's find that Instant Success formula! Rape the "nostalgia" moments/feelings from those 'older people'. The thing is. Sometimes Age really is A Concept...and an "old" voice is Never Truly Forgotten. The POWER of the Actors are always simplified by Budgets and money figures. You'll never preform another Big Trouble in Little China the same way you ponder and ponder why you can't garner the same appreciation of said movies of that era. Oh and James Garner was a Big Shot in the 70's and still has not been equaled in All the sad attempts attempts to resurrect the Past. Keep trying. The frail old 50 somethings still exist... Booya! ;) Physical Media still remains a hinderance to streaming technology. Sometimes some science's don't make sense. The End.

I liked your opening introduction for how you were going to present the movies. As a boy growing up in the 1970's I would look forward to seeing these movies on the WABC CHANNEL 7 in New York City the 4:30 movie. Years ago I received the remastered VHS of all 5 as a gift from my brother. I haven't watched them in a while but always loved the first one. It does seem Twilight Zone ish mainly because Rod Serling had played a role in the writing of this. I read the entire book as a boy and was confused because it was nothing like this. However the animated series in the 1970's did give it a better depiction of the book. The TV series was alright I own the DVD series, a friend gave it to me. I remember watching it back in the 1970's as well. I can't give an honest rating for these films. I only wish they had the budget for the make-up it looked awful as the series moved on. Maybe they can go back and fix it and make it look better like Star Trek or Star Wars.

Actually, I feel that "Battle "of which is The Fifth Installment of The Movie Franchise has The Most Sentimental Value for How it both starts and ends with The Lawgiver telling the Story to an equal Society of both humans and apes. Also in between how it ends with The Apes joining the Human Race with MacDonald telling Caeser "You say that they have rights but we're not his equals if you wish to release us then free us completely to live together with love. "Caeser then says "can't have anything to do with the human way ,the human way is violence and death. "Then Virgil The Orangutan said "Aldo was not human. Then Caeser said "You Virgil are a very wise Teacher." Then Virgil said "And you Caeser are a very wise King."Then going back to The Lawgiver telling the Story he said "and we still await that one fateful day when the Earth will be destroyed. Then we see the Statue of Caeser crying what may be both happy and sad tears at once.Btw I helped to make the Planet of The Apes:The Forbidden zone Miniseries to come to be when at Malibu Graphics they did POTA:Blood of the Apes with the misquoted saying on the cover of #1 of "Ape shall never kill ape unless it's his job."as recited by a Soldier ape on the cover.I then corrected them through the mail they then sent me a sarcastic postcard saying "Boy you sure put allot of thought into that letter on the time lives of the Ape universe glad to know Blood of the apes really gets you to use the brain cells ,hope it didn't distract you too much from the stories themselves and you're still with us."I then wrote them back to prove that I was still with them and like before they were just as annoyed by me as they were glad to have me with them.But please also do read my letter that's seen in Protectors #16 in Re:to POTA:The Forbidden Zone and in conclusion signed as Stephen "Steve" because in a rush I left out G. Baer aka "Ste" so in full it's Stephen "Steve" G. Baer a.k.a."Ste" as it's also seen in various DC Publications Like in The Outsiders #8 and in a letters column of DC's The Flintstones and The Jetsons but please do check this out for yourself it also mentions Planet of The Apes. But please do read all issues of The Flintstones and The Jetsons all other Flintstone Publications at Charlton,Harvey Comics,and Archie Comics etc.Also read all POTA Publications by Marvel and they're currently doing POTA again so far with 5 issues andso far 2 issues of Beware The Planet of The Apes.

Great episode as usual, I bought the original "Planet of the Apes" movie on DVD sometime in 2011, but never took the time to watch it. I did rent it one time from my local Video Store as a kid after I was first exposed to the series through a 2 part TV special that reran on AMC at the time, and yes, I found out about the twist ending through that. I'll have to check out the original film, and also I sometime ago bought the first of the newer series "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", so I'll have to watch that as well. Again great work on this episode, the opening was a hoot with the dubbed scene. That's pretty much my thoughts on most sequels as well. I'd make a list of exceptions, but I don't want to make this comment into a freaking novel. lol

Beneath was so disappointing to me as a child that I wouldn't end up watching Escape, Conquest, and Battle until I was an adult (which ended up being a mistake because I ended up loving those films). In retrospect, I really appreciate that they had the balls to end the film the way they did, even if it is a bummer of an ending. I also really like the dystopian New York setting and mutant humans. Unfortunately, however, I still find Beneath a slog to get through.

Actually, "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" (film # 4) was one of the most politically "revolutionary" sci-fi films ever produced; and certainly of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The last film ('Battle for the Planet of the Apes') was problematic and very low budget (I grant you) but the other 4 held-up well to exceptionally well. Besides, Apes like all modern lore/myths has an epic retelling. Yes, Hollywood is interested in money. News flash. But there is some benefit to a fascinating story premise being recrafted and re-imagined again and again. Now Tim Burton's version.... yuck!! I agree.

Felt like I had to drop this but the Unrated version of conquest is a much watch. And as hard as it is to find there's a specific DVD version of battle for the planet of the apes that add at least 10 minutes of deleted scenes that help give a book end and support the pacing. It turns Battle from mediocre to slightly good in my opinion.

Planet of the Apes 2001: haven't seen it. Rise of the Planet of the Apes: 8/10. An amazing start to an amazing trilogy. Fantastic visuals, amazing acting from Serkis, and overall solid storytelling throughout. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: 8.5/10. Better than the first film. Ambitious in that 1/4 of the film is in ape signing. The action scenes are fantastic, the characters are well written, and the dystopian world is really well done. War for the Planet of the Apes: 7/10. A solid movie in it's own right, but it's tonally inconsistent in parts. The character of Bad Ape was poorly written, while The Colonel is the best villain to come from the reboots. All in all, it's a fitting end to the trilogy.

Though the action, while good, is lacking by modern standards. 8/10 War for the Planet of the Apes: An improvement in every way over it's predecessor, War for the Planet of the Apes manages to combine great, thrilling action, an intelligent and thought provoking narrative, a tearjerker of an ending, and strong performances from it's cast into a near flawless film. Andy Serkis once again is a highlight as Caesar, bringing the character's conflicts and inner struggle to life in an Oscar worthy performance. 10/10

I love all of the Apes originals, The first one could of been left as it was and would still be great....but more please. I love the series also. In the series there were Apes villages and towns all over though.

Well thanks for the review but I do have to disagree with much you said. I do agree that the chimps coming back via spaceship technology makes no sense, but it is forgivable for the wonderful movies you are about to see. The Planet of the Apes movies were highly popular and enjoyable with myself, my family and all of my friends. We also watch the tv series and cartoon series which we also loved. We built the model kits, collected the Topps bubble gum cards, read the comic books and magazine and got our hands on anything to do with them apes series. They was even a slogan that was used by the advertisers at this time "GO APE".. and that is exactly what thousands of people did. The Planet of the Apes were a cultural phenomenon. All that out of the way I have been rewatching all these movies again..I haven't seen these in years! I think they all hold up remarkable well. I still love the endings..which I believe every movie had a very strong ending. I still love the premises of the movies and all the characters. I believe these movies are alot better then the souless movies Hollywood makes today. These movies have a story to tell. Today's movie are all about special effects. Also todays movies move too fast ..their pace is accelerated so you don't even get to know the characters. In the original Apes movies you get to know both the Apes and the Humans so you care what happen to them. I consider all of the original Apes movies well worth watching. The original is Masterpiece. Conquest is a wonderful film and the other three films are very good and compelling. I do like your reviews and please keep them coming. I hope my comments do not offend you..just wanted to share my beliefs.

Plz advise me on these doubts, * How did the humans who survived with Caesar become mute? Lost the power to talk? * Why dint the Mutants try to save the people in the surface and bring them to the underworld? * Apart from Caesar or his descendants. How did other apes start to speak? * The Mutants could have used their mind control over the attacking apes. * The Mutants could have helped Taylor to find the spacecraft and return to the past to warn and save mankind. Instead they wanted to kill Taylor?

I must disagree with a lot of your review rankings. Mine are as follows: Planet of the Apes(1968): No explanation needed, just epic! Beneath the Planet of the Apes(Criminally underrated, it is one of the films that has the most to say about mankind and I found it an engaging film, ending is almost as epic as the first film, and Nova talks!!!) Conquest of the Planet of the Apes: You wont ever see a film as dark as this movie made now! Escape from the Planet of the Apes: Decent movie, not as good as you make it out to be, it's more a film for a younger audience. Battle for the Planet of the Apes: Meh! Some decent scenes mixed in, but overall forgettable, I can watch this one on occasion

Planet of the Apes 2001: I enjoyed the dumb action but understand the criticisms, 6/10 Rise of the Planet of the Apes: A great start to a new franchise that feels familiar with amazing special effects 10/10 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: A great continuation to the story that keeps all the great technical aspects of Rise. 10/10 War: I haven't seen it yet (so don't count this in the tally), but if it's anything like the last 2, it'll bridge this series with the original just as great as the others, 10?/10.

Conquest was NOT filmed at the University of California Irvine campus, How on earth did you come up with that? It was filmed in Century City which was a rather new shopping complex in west Los Angeles. I was a lucky kid and got to watch the big climactic battle scene actually being filmed one night.
@Jogwheel
@Jogwheel 2 жыл бұрын
Seems as though I may have misattributed one location for another - but both UCI and Century City were used, _"The primary location was Century City, Los Angeles, that had previously been part of the 20th Century Fox backlot and translated well the bleak future with monochromatic buildings in a sterile ultramodern style. Also used as a shooting location was the University of California, Irvine, in Orange County."_

@@Jogwheel That is odd, I didn't know UCI was part of those locations, It is too bad Century City was remodeled a few years ago, but a lot of it still looks the same. There should be a statue of Cesar there somewhere.

No no no. Great video and all, but here are the REAL reviews: Planet of the Apes: Great classic. Timeless (for the time being). Has its flaws, but remains a hell of a good time. Beneath: As a sequel, it's fucking awful. But as a film in its own right, it's absolutely bonkers and endlessly fascinating. Great stuff. Escape: The crowd-pleaser. At least until the ending. But up until then, it's marvelously entertaining. Conquest: An underrated jewel of a film. Visceral and exciting, its full cut version more than lives up to the promise of its provocative title. Battle: Tragedy on a TV budget. What the fuck is this shit? The only Planet sequel we REALLY didn't need.

Cool video. Here are my reviews... Planet of the Apes '01: Despite makeup that's more convincing than the old and the new movies, Burton's vision remains unclear and scattered, ultimately butchering the ending in the process. 3/10. Rise of the Planet of the Apes: A very solid origin story with great effects work and a powerful performance by a too often overlooked Andy Serkis. 9/10. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Much of the same from Rise, but contains enough excitement to warrant a more than enjoyable viewing. 8/10.

Conquest is definitely the second best in the franchise, the original ending (fuck the theatrical version) is something more people need to see, especially since the LA Riots and Black Lives Matter have shown that people are ignoring the message of violence prolongs hate, and hate prolongs violence.

they got the ship from the the 2nd guy arrived. Dr. Milo,being a brilliant scientist, was able to reverse engineer the ship and fix it. He was also able to understand the concept of flying the spacecraft but he was killed practically as soon as they arrived by a primitive gorilla. Also, I wouldn’t say that them being in the west coast is lazy writing. Dr. milo really only had a few days to learn the ship and from the fact that they crashed it’s highly possible that he didn’t know how to land it and they just happened to land in that area. Moreover, considering that it is mentioned that the shockwave is wat thru them bak in(as that was never the goal. Only to leave planet was the goal) it’s also plausible that certain functions of the ship could’ve gotten damaged. Granted that wasn’t explained, I guess really it can be viewed as lazy writing but I don’t think it was imo.
