As an introvert myself, I've been eyeing this book for a while now but I was hesitant since I've never studied psychology, might check it out now!

I think the psychology was really accessible. Knowing nothing about psychology, I found that Cain explained everything in ways that really made sense. You should definitely check it out if you identify as an introvert. I found that reading about other introverts made me feel more okay with some of my introverted habits. It was a very comforting read.

I am still thinking about it... and I will probably continue to think about it for a long time. It put into words a lot of things that I just felt but couldn't explain to my extroverted friends. I'll have to find this TED talk!

Nice video. Have it on my radar for awhile already. You definitely triggered my interest especially mentioning the process of pretending of being an extravert in order to be successful, my life story:)

I found the pretending to be an extrovert part really interesting too, because it's basically what I've been doing for three years as part of my job. I also find my job very exhausting and people don't get why getting paid to play with children is so mentally exhausting. It was really comforting to read this book and realize that other people (who are faking it too) are also in the same boat me. If you read Quiet, I'd be really curious to hear you thoughts.

+Emily Cait (CreativeAndOriginalTitle) are you introvert Emily???
@EmilyCait
@EmilyCait 8 жыл бұрын
Syafridon Seriti Yes I am. The terms 'introvert' and 'extrovert' have been slightly distorted in popular imagination. Extroverts feel energized interacting with people; introverts feel drained. So you can run into very chatty and outgoing people who need to recover after social gatherings.

Hi Emily, I just finished reading this book on Kindle. I identified so much with what was written. What do you think about the part where Susan mentions introverts being able to behave as extroverts when they speak about things that they love to do ?

Hi Kunal! It's been about three years since I read Quiet, so I don't quite remember the exactly what Cain was referring to here. Can you refresh my memory a bit?
@kunalkher1729
@kunalkher1729 7 жыл бұрын
Emily Cait Yes of course. What she says is introverts can display extroverted behaviour when the topic at hand pertains to something an introvert is highly passionate about. Do you still have the book with you ? It would surely be worth re-reading. Kudos to spreading Susan's message !

From what I remember introversion and extroversion have more to do with how people gain/lose energy. So extroverts gain energy from being with other people and introverts find this draining and require alone time to recharge. Introverts can be shy or confident (not sure what the appropriate opposite of "shy" is, but for lack of a better word I'm going to use "confident") and extroverts can be shy or confident. So I suppose I agree that you could encounter a really confident introvert, who does something like public speaking for a living because they are passionate about it -- be perceived as an extrovert, because we often conflate confidence and extroversion -- and be physically and emotionally drained from their work with people.

@@kunalkher1729 Bill Gates is an example of a confident introvert. Here it looks like introverts behave that way to something that is meaningful to them. This might be an introverted individual, very motivated and enthusiastic towards their passion. This is my personal opinion. Certain traits are fixed and can't be changed. But if for example the introverted individual needs to socialise for their project, they would be more likely to do that because of the motivation for that project. Also, Introverts do take time to open up. They would be less likely to be open in a situation where they are required to have small talk and more likely to open up when asked about their passion. People generally talk about their passion with much enthusiasm and detail. This is the same for introverts. And who doesn't act on the things with passion they love to do? This is my personal opinion. Also Carl Jung stated that there is no pure introvert or pure extrovert. Such a person would be unhealthy. Everybody is an ambivert with varying degrees of both personality dimensions. There's a lot of research to draw a line on the definitions. The book is great but doesn't explain much on ambiverts

Awesome review. I'm almost finished with this book myself. You have a very peaceful way of talking. Have you heard of the term "ambivert"? You strike me as being more in the middle of the spectrum, just based on this video alone. But that may also be because I'm comparing you to myself, which makes you seem more extroverted. It's interesting how the social context in which we behave influences our behavior. We tend to be more extroverted around certain people and less so around others. Talking in front of the camera all alone is certainly a weird experience. I still can't get used to it!

Micah Buzan I think the sheer amount of caffeine I usually consume before filming results in me seeming more extroverted than I would if you happened to meet me in real life. :P It is really interesting how the social context can change how we behave. I find it easier and less draining to work with younger people compared to my peers or older people. So running a children's program with 20+ kids is no big deal, but presenting in a university classroom is overwhelming.

Emily Cait Oh Yeah, I totally agree about the caffeine being a big game changer. It's funny because usually people say "you don't talk much, do you?" BUT wait...3 cups of coffee later and I'm more likely to hear I never shut up! Also It's a lot easier to speak if it's about something I find personally interesting. I've gotten better at small talk, and emulating the style of an extrovert, but it's still emotionally draining to engage in that sort of interaction for more than a few minutes. Anyway, awesome review. You've encouraged me to post my own review of this book soon.
