Lovely video! My dad passed away recently unfortunately. He had a couple of Leicas and I want to learn about them now. Videos like these are very helpful! Thank you! - David, Sweden

A Leica is like a Porsche 911 or like the nicest gril at the school When you finally hold them in your hands, problems start to come. They cost you tons of money, everybody is jealous and wants to touch them. I've had all three and after decades all is different The 911 is a rusty wreck. She is grey and totally changed. The Leica has become an antique thing. And so am I.

Hi Peter, great video. I just traded a Polaroid 110B for a Leica IIIc, in the 40,000 serial number range. Your video was especially helpful - the business card trick saves time cutting each roll of film. Can’t wait to give it a go!

Hi Peter, I have quite a few vintage Leicas including two IIIc types. They span the decade of production as one dates from 1940 and the other 1950. When I was in my mid 20s back in the 70s I bought a IIIC dating from 1942. I sold it ten years later. I did take a photo of it and I posted it on an fb group dedicated to leica collectors. To cut a long story short someone traced it to an auction in 2012 when the blighter was sold for around £5.000

Very good thought, its useless to babble on about cameras if you dont see any results! I know a lot of folks could take some inspiration from that! Also the picture of the lamp with the pigeon is really a great one Pete! Cheers

As Leicas are too expensive I own a FED 2 which is a copy of a Leica!

To my (extremely limited) knowledge the slow speeds are controlled by the front dial/cam controlling a long arm that reaches to the slow speed timing gears in the base of the camera. There is probably some problem with the bottom of this arm connecting to the curtain mechanism, and so stopping the engagement of slow speed timing gears.

😱 I didn’t know about the business card trick I’ll have to try it on my iii!

I heard some people doing that trick and destroyed their Leica just to spare one or two shots. I have a IIIF and cut the lead as all the photographers did back in the days.

That is going to cost a pretty penny to repair. The only real Leica, the Barnacks. The M series is fine, but always ridiculously expensive and too big and heavy. Far from what Oskar Barnack had in mind. Very nice shots.

I hope your shutter lasts long enough with the way you load the film 😭. Completely ignored the instructions on cutting and extending the film leader

Hard to believe German precision optical production was up and running a year after the war ended. I tend to leave the slower speeds alone on elderly rangefinders. The main shutter speeds are often near enough to be useable, and messing with the lower ones jams the whole thing up.
