Review: Why I bought a Lenovo T14 with AMD Ryzen 7 Pro instead of a Macbook Pro for Video Editing

A couple clarifications based on comments: I plan on upgrading the RAM soon and adding another 16gb stick which should dramatically speed things up for little cost. I think I got the weight wrong - its about 3.2 pounds. Sometimes it does run hot but I haven't had too much of an issue.

I can confirm this review. I'm coding in C# on a T14, mostly hooked up to USB-C docking station with 2 addtional screens (yeah, you don't need a thunderbolt port for that). It's pretty quiet, though it blows pretty hot air out of the side (I prefer that to Dell Precission, which sound like a vacuum cleaner and you can't really feel any airflow anywhere). The keyboard is just amazing, touchpad is meh (if you ever used a MacBook before, the touchpad is a nogo, sadly). I chose this one moslty because of IO - plenty of ports, including Ethernet. Sometimes I go to a client site and when I need access to their network, instead of usual funny business with WiFi certificates, I just plug in a cable and it's ready to go. The processor is plenty fast, last for hours and hours, the only real downside is the touchpad. You can get used to it to the point where it is a no-issue, but then you get on something like Dell XPS or MacBook and you are suddenly aware of the difference.

Same on the Macbook Pro point, I was going to get the Macbook Air M1 maxed out on specs but the price point just wasn't there, not being able to personally upgrade that device myself is really the main reason I didn't get it. Just purchased a Lenovo T14 AMD Ryzen 7 with 16GB soldered RAM, their smallest SSD hard drive, and the low-power 400 nit screen for $1K on Black Friday. Purchased SEPARATELY a 32GB SODIMM 3200Mhz LPDDR4 Crucial Ram Chip (Machine has 48GB DDR4 3200Mhz total now, 16GB Soldered, 32GB SODIMM) and a SEPARATE 1TB SSD Samsung drive totaling $280 from Amazon for Black Friday. So Basically, I fully maxed the Specs on this machine for around $1,300. This machine is a beast and will last me for years, unbelievably great price on it.

Thanks for the review. Currently, the T14 AMD 4750U is on top of my list for my next laptop. Just haven't pulled the trigger on it. You mentioned that you're running solely on the soldered 16gb memory and will probably upgrade in a year. Why not upgrade now? It looks like you can get a 16gb DDR4 3200Mhz SODIMM for around $60 and then you would be running in dual-channel mode and would probably get a nice boost in performance (Just my 2cents).

@PaulMillerd 3 жыл бұрын
I went with the T14 because of the upgradeable RAM and the availability of the ryzen processor i wanted. I think the T14S is smaller though. Battery is solid, using it mostly plugged in, but lasts several hours. Still new so I know it wont be as good over time but I've been happy with lenovo batteries in the past.

@cab9191
@cab9191 3 жыл бұрын
I also went with the T14 because it has better cooling (2 fan exhausts instead of 1 on the T14s), the user upgradable ram slot (which I already upgraded with a 2nd 16gb ram stick), better audio (top firing speakers instead of bottom firing), and cheaper....... the T14 is plenty compact - waaaay thinner than my work Thinkpad a few years ago.
@vovical
@vovical 3 жыл бұрын
The T14 is better for a few reasons. Better cooling RAM upgrades Better audio Cheaper AAND an overlooked one. The T14 keyboard is not molded into the frame. So if you spill something on it and ruin the keyboard or it breaks somehow, you simply pick up a 30 or 40 dollar replacement and slot it in. Where as on the T14s you have to remove a ton of stuff to get to the keyboard. IMO the T14s is not worth it compared to the T14, especially for the price
@koizer5692
@koizer5692 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulMillerd yeah, getting my T14 in december, I think it is a lot better because it’s more upgradable and also have better cooling which is crucial for me, I also prefer bigger laptops than the thin ones. Also I checked out and battery perfom great in both laptops so T14 is a lot better in my opinion and also is more cheaper than the T14s. Excited for my new Thinkpad to come! A great machine with a good price if you know how to buy. 🔥 Also I had a 16inch Macbook like you but I didn’t like it and returned it because the cooling system and the benchmark was not that good for the high price of that laptop.

Depends on whether you go with the 300 or 400 nit screen variation... The 400 one has 72% ntsc and 100%srgb. I believe the were 2 400 nit options, one with privacy guard and one with low power display. Therefore the 300 nit one has a touchscreen.
