Nope. They will win a game or two that's low-scoring. But they certainly won't win the series. This game was much closer than it appeared and the refs very easily could have called boarding against Iorio instead of spotting the Rangers the 2-0 lead. (To be clear it would have been an iffy call either way, but since they were calling absolutely everything to that point it was a surprising non-call). Who cares. Rangers won this one. I expect game 2 to go to overtime. We shall see.

The Rangers played a pretty sloppy game I don't know what game you watched. The terrible Garden ice didn't help either. They couldn't pass cleanly and the Caps playing that style of low event hockey makes for a pretty lame series.

@@jameshannagan4256 I have no clue what game you watched. Sure the first period the Rangers were sloppy. They have a week off, after all. But then they tightened things up and started scoring. The passing was great from then on, as was defense and the Caps couldn't do much of anything.

Of the 8 teams to have played, we've had an interesting set of players to start goals off for their team. List of some players and num reg season goals: Rempe - 1 Fehérváry - 3 MacLean - 4 Beecher - 7 Kämpf - 8 Kuznetsov - 8 Only Hagel and Reinhart had more than 10 goals.

Game 3 will dictate where this series goes. Rangers always start fast and win the first two games, but if they struggle in Washington then it becomes a series. If they go up 3-0 it’s over for the caps.

The Rangers made that look relatively easy. The biggest issue for Washington is outside of Ovie. Where's the offense going to come from? The other issue is that once they get behind, they can't keep up and open things up. They have to play a certain way.

I think they were close to scoring on the PP and having the dynamics of the game shift quite a bit. Sooner or later they will score first and win a game by shutting it down. Look at the regular-season series with NYR. Overall though I think the Rangers will end up on top in 6.

Good take at the start, that the Rangers can play any type of hockey. If their opponent is like the Caps and wants low scoring games, fine, the Rangers can lock it down too and do the shutdown style better than their opponent. They just stay patient and wait and they eventually score a goal. They are fine winning games with only getting 2-3 goals. But they can play run and gun style too, fairly well, because they have speed and skill, and excellent goaltending to cover their ass when it goes the other way. Watched the team all year, this is the best they’ve been in a long long time.

Rusty first by the Rangers. Caps rarely threatened after. If the Caps dont score first in a game they are going to have to come out of their shell and once they do they get exposed.

Don't really agree. Played carefully and had to deal with bad calls. Barely any 5 on 5 time. Pp could have been better. Otherwise it was about standing firm against any early visiting team threat. Set the tone.

Caps power play was 8% for nearly the first three months of the season, which was historically bad. Then in the last two months of the season it goes to over 30% and carries them into the playoffs. Last night was the start of the season crew that was 0-4, held to a couple shots or none, and can barely get the puck past the blue line without turning it over. Kudos to the Rangers for keeping everything out of the center of the ice, but the Caps were exceedingly timid - especially after the two minute sequence where they gave up 3 of their 4 goals. They got their lone goal when they finally pushed something in front of the net and then Fehervary or Wilson (they changed credit for that goal at least a dozen time) poked it past Shesterkin. I wasn't that impressed with the Rangers. They came out a bit stiff and weren't able to get much going. But the Caps never pushed them and they did a great job of blocking everything around the perimeter. I thought I caught Shesterkin sleeping during the game a couple times because he had so little to do.

Two comment Vid. Loved the sweater earlier, BTW. These teams split home/home this year. This game is just as much Caps hockey as their wins. Been overcoming these since February. So far all the Caps are guaranteed to do is not win game one.

I usually don't complain about the refs but they were awful. I was at the game. Kelly Sutherland is the worst and in a league where refs aren't good that's saying A LOT. Refs need to be held accountable and meet the media after the game

Iorio getting hurt on that turnover not being able to get any pressure before panarin gets a wide open shot just sucks, goal 3 seems like it should have been an interference call for me but I am a caps fan, rempe goal was unlucky right place right time lindgren had no chance. Tough look for game 1 but we have two returning from injury and if they are healthy this series is going to be much much closer than people think. Caps need their credit and would love to see the younger half of the team get to see a playoff win or two

Yeah, I don't think the Caps are capable of a plan other than the lockdown that they already play. They will win a game or two this series that way, but not more than that. I think NYR is a safe pick to advance.

@@jameshannagan4256I agree their offense looked bad, but they could easily score a bunch on the power play. Ovechkin missed the net on the short side in the first period on the PP, a shot he usually puts in, while Shesterkin was out of position. I think the game is pretty different with Caps up 1-0. You're right they need to improve to have a shot at the series itself. I don't think they're likely to win. I'd take the Rangers in 6.

Two things: 1. Is I think the reffing was really bad this game, a lot of missed calls and even missed players on who should have gotten the penalty, really sloppy overall and they need to clean it up. 2. Bad reffing or not, the Caps kinda got bullied badly this game and if they don't shape up then they're gonna get swept which would not be fun

Igor was not busy but he looks dialed in That's the first problem for the caps the defence at the blue line was tight for the rangers Second problem the Rangers were a blocking machine combine that with Igor and i don't see the Caps scoring no more then 2 goals a game more like 1. On any given night the rangers will out score them. That being said i don't think it will be a sweep. Rangers in five.

4 regular penalties and a 4 on 4 in the first period. No argument about the fouls just weird for both teams. It was Rempe's elbow that hit Malenstyn. Not saying it's a foul, just at his height, if he doesn't mind his elbows, he's gonna catch penalties that may not be penalties. Rempe and McIlrath have fought before in the AHL. He's (Mc) not scared of the big kid. Now, let's see if the Caps can do what they do and put together a string.

Everybody has got it wrong! The Caps lost this game when Pacioretty took a penalty. That made it 4 on 4 instead of a Caps pp. He is a veteran an should no better. Those 3 goals in 2:06 would not have happened. A different outcome would have been the result. I'm not saying the Caps win, but iorio does not get hurt. The Caps may score on that pp and the game changes. They could also go on to lose 10 to 0 instead of 4 to 1. Its all max's fault for taking a stupid penalty.

This is the only series that is 100% pointless imo. I dont see a road to victory for the Caps and they didnt belong in the playoffs. They were just the best of the worst.

Dude, the Capitals have been the best team on average in the NHL (give or take Pittsburgh) for 15 years. Give them a break. They need to rebuild. Ovechkin isn't the problem, and like all aging superstars, let the city let him hang around on a bad team for a while. Actually the issue with Washington is they're still trying to win, so they're playing a ridiculous defensive game that you do when you have no talent. Well, it's costing Ovechkin career goals. I'd yell at them if I were him and tell the Caps to tank a few years so he can rack up another couple 50-goal seasons and be done with it.

The worst part of this game was the embarrassing officiating that called every damned contact including complete love taps. They cannot possibly be serious about calling a game in the playoffs this way. These guys are flying on adrenaline and they make a point to call Bettman/Corsi Warrior style penalties. Complete joke. The playoffs have always been intense and tough and physical. This clown chose to call penalties because guys dropped sticks and the boards went boom. 7 of 20 1st period min were 5 on 5. Wake up Caps only goal came on an Igor up 3-0 brain fart where the backdoor is wide open because hes 6 feet out of the crease. Rangers d was absolutely stifling. If Igor stays focused and D plays this responsibly and tight, the series will go properly quickly
