I went to Goddards about 6 years ago. It was fantastic. Not just the quality of the food but the price. So cheap for a very touristy area of London. I also love jellied eels too.

I’ve had the eels and pie and mash since I was a nipper . Always a bowl of jellied eels on buffet table at family parties . Well done Gary for trying them . 👍😊

Goddards in Greenwich is TOPS! I visited this pie and mash shop ( I'm a Londoner) and it was so good I could have licked the plate! Highly recommended! Jellied eels great too!

I'm a Londoner and I've never eaten jellied eels and don't intend to start. They may be traditional but so was sending kids up chimneys.

As I said in your other pie and mash video, Goddards do a couple of great veggie pies. And they have lovely desserts too, although I'm always too stuffed to have any after!

Jellied Eels are the dogs! Love them. You can't go wrong with pie and mash, so tasty. I like to get the boat down the Thames from Waterloo to Greenwich. Lovely day out and so much to do there. Nice video, thank you.

Thanks yet again for the review, I'm a northern lad but lived in LONDON for 20 years and love gellied ells with pie and mash.You should have put the eels on top of the pie, the heat melts the jelly. Heaven! It is the one food I really miss from the smoke. All The best.

Love pie and mash. i love mine with stewed eels too. Jellied eels are the food of the gods. One of my very favourite things to eat. I have never understood why people don't like them. At least you tried then though which is more than a lot of people do.

Loved everything at Goddards, including the Jellied Eel experience. Aside from being boney I think it was tasty, but Pie & Mash is a must. Friendly staff as well. Perfect.

Love this channel - I’m an American who has yet to journey across the Atlantic pond. But I lived in Alaska for nearly 30 years, and I’ve eaten all sorts of dodgy seafood products, including fermented (rotten to my palate!) seal oil and buried salmon heads. I’ve always had a strange fascination with jellied eels, and I’m anxious to try them. If the flavor is good, I think I’d like them. We’ll see!

Jellied eels? Gary you are a brave man! I love fish and all seafood and I like smoked eel but jellied eels have a nasty texture. Well done for trying them! ♥ That pie, mash and liquor looked lovely. Parsley sauce with steak pie sounds so wrong but it really does work. I think it is nicer than gravy. The 10/10 was well deserved.

The pie and mash looked lovely Gary, I've only had it once in another part of London and it was awful with lumpy mash and a naff pie, but I'd like to try it again. Jellied eels are one of my seafood favourites, but alround the cafe looked nice and the price is excellent.

I went to Goddards a few years ago and loved the pie and eels - it was my first time trying jellied eels - I also tried a pie and mash shop in Bethnal Green - S & R Kelly I think it was called. That was tasty, only choice of pie was minced beef - and drinks were tea or coffee.

I remember taking my family to this place 33 years ago. Interior was a lot more basic then, still clean and utilitarian. Just looks posher now. Quality then, and glad to see nothing has changed. Gary, eals, vinegar and pepper, food of the gods my friend.

After watching the Maureen's video yesterday I decided I'd make pie, mash and liquor for dinner today. A minced beef Pukka pie in the air fryer, instant mash with plenty of butter and pepper, and home-made liquor made with a Tesco fish stock blob in half a pint of hot water, loads of dried parsley, thickened up with cornflour and a drop of milk. Spot on, it was. The last time I went to Greenwich park I got back home before I realised Goddard's was just there at the bottom of the hill! Missed out on those lovely eels ;)

I could try pie, mash and liquor but not the eels. I ate them as a kid, fresh from the river. I tried them in Holland, smoked. Neither time was a pleasant experience! You're a brave man, Gary! But yes, I'd try the rest happily; I love parsley!

The Germans eat smoked eels, and on my honeymoon in 1965, my wife, who is German, persuaded me to try one. I was blown away with the absolutely delicious taste. It's very similar to smoked kippers. Like you, jellied eels are not my bag, but my father loved them. I tried the eels on the Baltic Sea, where they still ship them worldwide. I guess love conquers all, lol. As an aside, the Baltic is also famous for sole, done with a crisp outside but with a perfectly cooked soft middle, also delicious. Keep up the great revues.

I've never tried Goddards, but I've been eating pie & mash with jellied eels since I was a kid. Lot's of salt, pepper and chilli vinegar, all washed down with a nice glass of orange squash. Greta stuff!

i took my wife a few years ago to a michelin star restaurant for our anniversary. there was smoked eel as a starter. i ordered it and it wasnt just good it was stunning. you sometimes have to push your boundaries

Found the channel today and subscribed. Excellent! I have eaten at Godard's a few times, the last time in November. Excellent value, but I found that the pie lacked seasoning.

As an East Londoner, I never quite understood jellied eels myself. Times were tough and the jelly was added as a sort of 'filler' to bulk it out. However Eels in and of themselves are quite tasty. I had smoked Eels once and they were delicious, I guess in the same way as, would you rather have pan seared salmon or boiled.

I miss pie and mash SO much. It was a ritual before going to the football. I used to frequent BJs on Barking Rd. I live in Swindon now and I wish you could get it here, there's plenty of ex-Londoners so why not? I don't mind jellied eels but I prefer stewed eels. It's all delicious

My grandad absolutley loved jellied eels. I remember one time when I was about 15 years old we were in Hastings and went to this seafood bar that had fresh fish ready to eat and he bought this little dish of jellied eels for me to try. I wasnt prepared for the taste of it. I was practically sick! Never again 😂 On the other hand pie and mash is very nice.

Ha,ha Gary, you are a braver man than me !! I have always said never knock anything until you have have tried it but those bad boys are an exception. I have never made a habit of eating anything that looks unappetising and these are no exception. My son is a sea fisherman and I was with him one day when he was fishing an estuary in the NE of England. By the end of the day the bait he was using was a festering, stinking mush and the only thing that he could catch was eels !! 🤮. That’s why I would never eat them, they are scavengers that don’t care what they eat - dead or alive 🤢. Thanks for the review 👍

I have to admit that whilst I might do the pie and mash, the jellied eels are not for me, ever..... So knowing you're not keen either, well done for giving it a go. That's a sign of a true food critic! (I used to shudder at some of the dishes which the late Anthony Bourdain used to try on his travels). So kudos to you! Your face was a picture as you approached them. 🤣🤣 And I'm going to agree with you that they are an acquired taste, even based on the fact that I haven't ever eaten one! I used to eat jellied eels at Weston super-mare. Delicious.

Me and the missus stay at the Intercontinental at the O2 every now and then and we cannot leave that neck of the woods without my wife getting her fix of pie mash and liquor, woo betide me if I try to skip it! It does get really busy so we hit it early, not long after it opens. We also go across to Boisdale in Canary Wharf, it’s owned by Jules Holland and have some dinner whilst watch a band, it’s not cheap, but it’s fun.

You know what they say about Marmite, it definitely holds true for jellied eels, you either hate them ( most do ) or love them. It was love for me ( almost ) when I first had it as a tourist if only for the fish's spine, indeed there's a correct way to eat them and I'd say mind the spine when you do. Other then that I've heard people complaining about the texture of the jelly but the jelly is there to camouflage the rather slimy texture of the eel and it does a good job at that, it compliments the eel really well. They're heaven with vinegar and a slice of bread ( even if they're not traditionally eaten with bread ). I've had eels on their own and I couldn't keep them down so I def like them jellied instead.

Another enjoyable video Gary, have eat here many times over the decades-along with the first ever Spoons the Clock Gate which opened in 1980 as you prob know + the Fish + Chip Shop-Jack the Chipper 😀 As for the Eels, why didn't the cameraman order the hot ones instead of the jellied ones? My dad was born in the Old Kent Road and we both used to laugh at the huge tourist con of jellied eels, no one actually from there used to eat them post victiorian poverty times. If you get people going on about "cor blimey jellied eels" you can garentee they are a Mockney .
