Thanks for reviewing my budgie cage! I took out all the mirrors when you said they could cause hormonal problems, I only really had them because my grandma insisted, and she'd had many budgies before. Also, the stickers aren't a worry at all, Frost doesn't seem to really like destroying toys and hasn't touched them at all. The most the little guy does is shake things around and ring its little bell. I made that post while I was still in school, so I had less time overall to let the bird out. Now that I'm completely out of school for the summer, I make sure it has plenty of time outside. I'll try my best to give it new foods too, I didn't know it could eat things other than seeds and, again, my grandma didn't tell me much. I do have a more natural wood perch outside its cage with its own swing and toy that aren't plastic, and I'll try and find more natural perches for inside too! Again, thank you so much for letting me know how to do better and I'll try to improve from now on!

Paper towels are a fine replacement for substrate if (for whatever reason) you can't have substrate for your beardie. Besides from that, that tank is actually despicable..I hope that's temporary because that's not suitable housing for a beardie. Hopefully the person who posted this sees this video and makes some changes immediately because they're not providing an adequate life for that animal.

Yeah the beardy’s “enclosure” is really bad. Like you said, no hides, nothing for it to do. But also, bearded dragons are climbers. Because there’s nothing for it to climb and it’s enclosure is not closable, it will most likely escape and very possibly hurt itself. Also, bearded dragons need a specific temperature, which won’t be sustainable in that enclosure. Beardy’s need wooden enclosures to sustain heat properly. Substrate is also ideal. Also a bit worrying that there’s no food, and live foods like mealworms and crickets are an amazing source of enrichment which this owner cannot use due to, well, lack of walls.
@beardiemom

Well, I wouldn't exactly free-feed any insects as to not get an overweight beardie, but I agree on everything else. I have my boy for a little over 3 months and he's still in quarantine since he was just declared parasite free (I didn't do my research on the breeder and there's no way I would have brought him back to that place after I realize how much he went through), but since he is finally free of parasites, I decided to at least exchange the paper towel for loose substrate so he could engage in digging behavior until he goes from the 120 gallon I'm using as a "quarantine" setup to the 270 gallon that will be his permanent home. Also, one thing you didn't touch on is the red heat lamp, which, from what I have read is also really bad for them and the UV being on the other side of the tank. Poor baby looks really unhappy, too ☹
@jasper8877
@jasper8877 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they just took it out for the photo, but hopefully they have a food dish with salad for him. Different fruits and vegetables are necessary for a bearded dragon's diet, and the beardy may become stunted from not getting enough nutrients. Also, I'm a bit concerned about the possibility that the beardy may try to eat the paper towels.
@beardiemom
@beardiemom 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasper8877 My beardie was on paper towel until today and didn't try to eat it, but it was a bit of a concern of mine, too. Had I known of butcher paper a bit earlier, I would have gotten that instead. Butcher paper has the perks of being smooth and not perforated, as well as coming on a large roll so you can just cut it to the size of the terrarium. But tbh, unless there's a reason why a beardie shouldn't have loose sub, like intestinal parasites or being new and under observation, paper towel, butcher paper and tile are all going to be inferior to a proper loose substrate.

So my bf is a reptile breeder who tries to do everything the best way possible and I’m going to school to be a reptile vet. That bearded dragon is in DISTRESS! It’s mouth should not be open like that! It probably has a respiratory infection and who knows what other issues. It also has no uvb bulb which is MANDATORY for bearded dragons so there is a good chance it had metabolic bone disease. Heat bulbs are recommended but never in the enclosure unless protected so the animal can’t burn themselves.

For the brededed dragon paper towel are a fine and safe substrate😀 but... The uvb and the "heat" light are too far off the ground the breaded dragon look like he might have metabolic bone desese:( do to poor lighting the food bowl might be take out after being fed (that what I do) the cage dose look big enuf but the "cage" is not really a cage. I also saw just like you said he dose need something to climb and hide on for enrichment overall that was a trashy cage and they need to get a real one. (At least 40g). I wish people did proper research before getting animals it always makes me sad to see animals living in a bad environment:(

Small Update/Clarification - I have been making sure he gets more care in the past two or three-ish months. He is much happier (i think) and he’s gained back weight that he lost. He does go through brumation, eats a salad every two days, and gets worms 2-3 times a week. He isn’t as aggressive or skittish, and willingly sits with me. The comment below is a general overview of his life. He is doing much better than he was a few months ago. my little brother got a beardie, and i absolutely adore him and i’m kinda worried about him. his cage seems kinda small to me, he’s as long as about half of it if that’s any frame of reference. he also probably doesn’t get enough water or food but no one else but my dad seems to really care. he’s also in a pretty stressful environment (my brother is very, very loud and has a bright tv on all night) and i’m kind of worried. if i don’t feed him his worms, he pretty much doesn’t get any from anyone but my dad. my brother forgets to feed him sometimes and never takes him out of his tank. i’ve asked to move him to my room, even though i don’t truly have the open surface space, but i can move a few things and make some, but my heating doesn’t work too well in the winter so that worries me and i’m adopting a dog soon that will live in my room as well. i just don’t know what to do and thought someone here might be able to help. TL;DR - I’m worried that my brothers beardie is being treated poorly and i need advice. He likely doesn’t get enough food, water, or attention, and is in a pretty stressful environment constantly.

I feed mine Salat every 2-3 days and roaches twice a week. The cage should be 150cmx50cmx50cm in size. They NEED and Do sleep the whole Winter! In that time the Temperature should be below 18c° but higher than 10c°. Slowly reduce the heat over some time and after about 3 months slowly rise the Temperature again. During sleep they should still move when touched. About the water, they can only See moving water, so a water Fall would be great. I tend to just give dem water with a syringe directly into the mouth once a month. About 5ml. They dont Need it if they eat enough veggies. They love blueberries and strawberries and a lot of flowers. Crushed Sepia bone should also always be available for them to eat. They need the minerals. With the right food they should also poop once a Day or at least every second Day. If they dont, bath him in warm water till He poops. Mealworms and locusts are Bad food for beardies. Too much mealworms can lead to constipation. Locust tend to have a lot of viruses because they eat their own dead. Mine had worms several Times because of this, which is why i swiched to roaches. I hope that helps!

It's not really your brother's beardy, since he doesn't seem to take care of it. (Why does he have it anyway if he cares that little? May as well put a figure inside the terrarium instead.) If you don't have the room for a terrarium, are you sure you have enough room for a dog?
@_aceofspades
@_aceofspades 2 жыл бұрын
@@feuerling Yes! I didn’t clear that up, my bad. I’d have to have him up on a large open surface, and I don’t have an open surface large enough for his tank near an outlet, like on my desk or dresser. i have an alcove where my dog will be, like her crate and bed etc.. I’d have to re-arrange quite a bit if he were to move up here, like moving my dresser (my only large enough surface) towards an accessible outlet, moving my bookshelves, and some other things. I’m not opposed to the idea, but my brother doesn’t want him up here when he’s ‘his pet’. My dad and i (and occasionally the my small cousins and grandmother when we are away) are the only ones who really interact with him. Waffles (that’s his name lol) is pretty skittish and before i adopt my dog (she won’t be here for months, like until March of next year. She’s training to be a service dog.) i’m trying to both acclimatize him to people and leash train our other two dogs.

Hello! I don’t have a bearded dragon but my brother has a bearded dragon. (He recently moved out) I can’t say a lot but I know two things for certain, substrate is preferred and it’s better for the bearded dragon, you should only be using paper towels as substrate if it’s needed and you cannot have substrate for some reason. This person has no walls to the enclosure, making live food pretty much impossible. My brother would feed his bearded dragon, crickets, mealworms, and small cockroaches (he didn’t feed the bearded dragon cockroaches often). I’m guessing that person didn’t have experience with bearded dragons and decided to get one without doing research.

The problem with pet/fish stores is that the employees are either not trained & don't know any info about the animals or they just lie to make a sale. A lot of new fish keepers have been given bad advice & ended up with tanks that are too small for their fish to grow into, they get a single fish that needs to be in a school or they get a few fish that need to be kept alone (like beta). I know this isn't the case everywhere, in every shop, but it is a problem.

putting a bearded dragon on paper towels is like putting new fish in a quarantine tank with no substrate. it shouldn’t be a permanent arrangement but it is useful for monitoring that animals health. there is a lot of other problems with this (enclosure?). first of all yeah they like to climb. especially under the heat lamp. in the wild they would sit on the highest place they can reach to bask in the sun and in captivity they prefer to do that as well. these light are either one heat lamp and one uvb lamp or one heat lamp and one normal lamp which would be bad. they need uvb. not having a food dish isn’t a bug deal as long as it isn’t on sand and the area is very clean. other thing is though insects. it looks like insects could escape into your house quite easily. this person strikes me as an impulse buyer. they see a pretty animal and they buy it without doing the research.

I used to have bantam chickens, Guinea Fowl and Pekin Ducks (but we moved to a smaller property so I had to re home them ). I also had a packman frog, but when I was on holiday he jumped out of his tank somehow and dried up. I was so upset finding him dead when I got home.

Does anyone know how to deal with hair algea(or whatever they're called) in ponds? In an Aquarium I could just turn down the lights but that doesn't really work with an outside pond I don't wanna use chemicals because we have a lot of native species in there and I don't know how sensitive they are I'm already taking a lot of algea out by hand almost every day but they grow back really fast
@CaptainDCap
@CaptainDCap 2 жыл бұрын
You may need more plants to outcompete the algae for resources. Or you may need to add algae eating fish. Or your pond may be overstocked. Or-... Too many options to give on a two sentence question. If you think the pond gets too much light, you can add floating plants to block the light from reaching the algae.

@@PeacheIIe no we've had the pond (and a really big aquarium) before I was born, so I kinda grew up with it, but the algea in the pond has gotten a little bit out of hand this year and I've been wondering if there's anything else to do about it than taking it out by hand because it's growing back a lot faster than usual

Sooooo, I have a unique problem with my friggan tank and maybe someone can help me. My orchid betta is in his own planted 5gal tank. I have both a bubbler and submersible uv filter, the outflow gushes upwards which I like a lot more compared to an external filter. Thing is... The green stringy algae. It is honestly driving me nuts. I have done everything, I am leery of chemicals because its a small tank. How the hell do I get rid of it? I make sure not to over feed, I do a 50% water change twice a month. I am pulling out my hair...
@midnightthebettafish589
@midnightthebettafish589 2 жыл бұрын
The number one best way to remove algae is to reduce lighting. Without bright light the algae will quickly die off. Then you can clean it out of the tank. I would also recommend getting some floater plants for the surface of the water to reduce lighting. Also some bettas like to hide in the roots of the plants. Many people leave their tank lights on 24/7 which is not only bad for the fish but will cause a boom in algae growth. So turn the lights off sometimes. I really hope this helps you!
@TheMisbegotten
@TheMisbegotten 2 жыл бұрын
@@midnightthebettafish589 I only leave the light on for about eight hours. My light has several settings, but I don't know how much light I should be giving compared to the ambient light around me. As for floater plants, I'll try that as well.

I always wonder why you never say Something about the birds Being kept alone... Most birds would like at least a Partner. I mean, you dont keep yours alone too.
@potatoscoop
@potatoscoop 2 жыл бұрын
this is true, but if you give the bird extra love and attention + extra toys they can do very well alone. i have a single bird, but there is almost always someone who she likes in the house and she is out at least 2-3 hours a day, and when we all leave the house for extended periods of time, we put on music for her. i make sure she has a lot of toys in her cage as well. she chirps sings a lot inside and out of her cage and loves to copy us sometimes and preen my hair. i think that as long as these people are going the extra mile to kee their bird happy and healthy, they can be happy as a single bird. this may not be true for all birds though.

@@potatoscoop What you are describing is nothing more than the result of social isolation of your bird. You cannot and should not be your bird's social partner. Birds are and will always be group animals and need a partner no matter how 'well' you take care of them. I understand that some parrots are too picky when choosing a partner, but you should at least try to find him a friend of the same species!

@@creakleundruby3463 i’m not going to change your mind, but not all birds need to be kept in pairs. some birds won’t do well in pairs or groups. some will need it. it really will depend on the species and personality, and how they are treated from when they hatch to when they are adopted or bought. my bird was hand raised, so she likes being with people. if it was an aviary raised bird, it would most likely need to be with another bird of the same species to be happy. i think that it really depends on the bird as to whether they should be kept in pairs or not. i don’t expect you to agree with me, but this is my opinion. also i just noticed your comment said that she had multiple in the video. she bought her bird hand raised alone at first, and then i think someone with two cockatiels moved in with her, so they eventually moved into the same cage but with a close eye being kept on them so they wouldn’t hurt eachother

i may try to bond her with another cockatiel in the future though, or have her meet with other birds, like in an aviary.

If your gonna keep female bettas together keep sisters that have been raised together because unrelated females are more likely to fight with each other and can be just as aggressive as males. Should be at least 5 related sister with 5 gallon per female with lots of hides and plants. I do have two females in a 15 gallon (sisters) they both have swim bladder issues that they had as fry they can't be with other females because more limited swimming abilities. Keep in mind you will need back up tanks if the females don't end up getting along and I have a spare 10 gallon if the sisters show any aggression.

I don't have a beardie, I have a snake, and lemme just scooch in real quick to say PAPER TOWELS ARE THE SAFEST SUBSTRATE TO USE!! I recently tried switching my 15 year old snake from paper towel to aspen, and he didn't know how to use it and burrow gently, and wound up getting a small case of mouthrot and a few small scrapes. When I took him to the vet, I was told to only use paper towels. (A vet 15 years ago also told me to only use paper towels! So I never changed, but I saw a lot of good reviews for aspen online, that's why I wanted to add more enrichment and something new for him.) Anyway, tomorrow is my snake's follow up appointment after giving him antibiotic injections at home every 3 days. So, wish us luck! He's definitely looking better! Paper towels from here on out again. (I make up for the lack of burrowing substrate by having a lot of things for my snake to climb on, and fake silk flowers/leaves that can be washed, and a really good hide.)

@wolfgamer2028
@wolfgamer2028 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that’s a very flawed rule. It doesn’t take into account the fish’s activity, or bio load. Basically under that rule it would be fine to put an Oscar in a 10 gallon.

@@wolfgamer2028 it’s a very basic rule of thumb that works for the small tropical fish we were there to buy like tetras and small gouramis
@wolfgamer2028
@wolfgamer2028 2 жыл бұрын
@@sukikurai even for the smaller fish it doesn’t really work. There are too many things it doesn’t take into account. For smaller tropical fish, that rule would say that it’s ok to have a betta in a 2-3 gallon permanently when they should have at least a 5 gallon. It would say that it’s ok to keep dwarf gouramis in 3 gallon tanks even though they should be in at least a 10 gallon, and that neon tetras ( for example ) are fine in a 5 gallon even though they should be in at least a 10 gallon. The rule is flawed and doesn’t work because it only takes into account the fish’s size and nothing else. It’s not a good rule to follow when stocking a tank. You absolutely need to take bio load, activity, and behavior into account, which that “ rule “ doesn’t do. It’s the kind of “ rule “ that would lead to many people accidentally overstocking their tank with fish that stay small but have a big bio load ( some dwarf plecos for example ), or stocking their tank with small fish that are just way too active to be in that tank and need more space.
@sukikurai
@sukikurai 2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfgamer2028 i think it is also assuming you are working with more than 10 gallons putting any fish in a 2 gallon tank is a little mean. for example i have a 50 gallon and we used that rule to make sure we didn’t overstock. so it’s less to do with this fish needs this amount of space and more about how many fish we can put in this tank. again though it is just a very general rule of thumb. we left about 5-10 gallons unclaimed as a safe area
