Only a month into the season and the score review system is under fire. Reviews are out of control and the Keays incident from last season seems to be the catalyst for all of this. Hopefully change can come quick.

Never understood why the rule can't be changed to if any part of the ball is touching the line it's out of bounds or point, (obviously depending where on field it is) If it's changed to that then there will barely be any reviews in this case.

I think a Captains Challenge could work if you get 1 for the First 3 Quarters (thats 1 for the duration of the first 3 Quarters not 1 for each of the First 3 Quarters) and 1 for the last Quarter (and 1 for Extra Time during finals should it be needed which includes Golden Score if its needed and like the First 3 Quarters is for the Duration of Extra Time not 1 each Period) and whatever the outcome that is your only 1 review for the Quarter. And at 3 Quarter Time if you haven't used your review you dont get a new one (same thing at the End of the 4th Quarter in a Finals match if scores are level)

Definitely need cameras on all four posts, or at least on both sides of the goal posts and they need better resolution and FPS if they are supposed to be a state-of-the-art digital system. The ball tracking system may work for score reviews, but not sure how it would work on the boundaries given that they curved (unlike Norwood). It's not like the AFL would be able to introduce eagle-eye like in tennis, even though that has got it wrong sometimes. Goal umpires need to be more assured of their score calls. If they believe it's a goal, then signal it as such. There is then ~45 seconds to the next centre bounce. The ARC should be reviewing the action in this time and signal to call the ball back if the ball has been touched or flicked the post. The score is amended accordingly and the ball returned to the fullback to bring the ball back into play. The umpires will probably just go with a soft-call anyway and claim the score as a behind. As for the Captain's Call... like Joey said on Fox, there should be conditions on the when, where, how and why. - only 1x call per team - only available from the 20 minute mark of the 4th - cannot be a direct scoring involvement (the ARC would be reviewing all goal scores anyway) or in-play free kicks, so situations like touched off the boot and then marked (like Blues v Dockers), dropped marks that are claimed, etc If a captain fails their call, then the ball should be considered dead in play and a ball-up continues.

I watched the Rd 5 2024 clash between the western Bulldogs and Essendon. In the final QTR there were 2 score reviews and the most annoying part of it was, after you could see they were both goals, it kept going and frustrated me. I'm thinking you can see the ball is a foot past the goal line and not touched, why are you rewinding the footage 15-20 times and pausing it and the decision is already obvious?
@Zelmazam12 ай бұрын
For the ball tracking, would that mean every ball needs to be calibrated for each different ground?
@TheSportingEyes2 ай бұрын
Not sure but possibly because of the grounds different dimensions, wouldn't think so for the goal lines though.
@brendancrook67652 ай бұрын
Maybe but it's not like that can't be part of the match setup. Heaps of time to change team banners everywhere. Time to calibrate a ball

The ONLY way to fix AFL football is to slow down the game. Speed is responsible for 90% of the problems (injuries, umpiring & aesthetics). However, it appears the AFL has no interest in fixing it.

Until freo get the 4 points from Carlton, they need more reviews

Agree about the annoying endless reviews, but the bigger picture is the ham fisted approach of the afl to almost everything; look at round zero: what a stupid name. Plus it was supposed to take place when the nrl were in Las Vegas, but actually took place when the nrl was back playing at the same time.. ridiculous. Now they're talking about three gather rounds, but each team only features in two of the three, defeating the whole purpose of the concept. People love the game in spite of the afl, not because of it.

The afl could get better cameras by buying samsung phones, they record at 4k at like 480fps with insane zoom. The fact they use the broadcast cameras still is so stupid. Also they called a review on a mark called behind in the dogs cats game, they called it back even after play had started. Insanely weird stuff, the afl doesnt know what they're doing

Complain about incorrect decisions --> More reviewed as umps don't back themselves --> People complain about "too much" score reviewing Arc should be upgraded to allow them to cut out anything easily and correctly. Should not be an umpire call and should be from the arc. Captain reviews will slow down the game just like people are complaining about the arc and most high-paced sports have implemented one and got rid of it. Also, it didn't cost Freo the points it was 25 out with 1:30 to godown Carlton's end anything else could have happened.

Never sure why people get so upset that they "slow the game down" its literally like 15 seconds who cares. The AFL has way worse things they've changed.
@Yt.Extrakt2 ай бұрын
Well first of all not all of them are not 15 seconds but it allows time for the opponent to set up a defense if it is called a behind
